“Believe in yourself, learn, and never stop wanting to build a better world.” - Mary McLeod Bethune, American educator, stateswoman, philanthropist, humanitarian, and civil rights leader As a student… and later as a teacher, September for me was a time of new beginnings: new pencils and crayons, new class lists, new friends, new subjects, new books, new challenges. I think it is a good time as well to remind us of what we have learned in the past, and take that “refresher course” before we forge ahead in the year to come! Here are some “AAUW Basics” to think about as we enter a new year of learning, working together, and enjoying the many activities of our branch!

MISSION: To advance gender equity for women and girls through research, educa-tion, and advocacy

For us this means we will support the AAUW mission as we plan programs, fund schol-

arships and student leaders, and amplify our collective voice for issues relating to women and girls.

VISION: Equity for all

For us this means we will learn about and advocate for practical solutions to achieve equity in education, workplaces and our own community.

VALUES: Nonpartisan. Fact based. Integrity. Inclusion and Intersectionality. For us this means we will reflect the AAUW national statement that this organization has always been “fiercely nonpartisan but not values neutral”. We will keep this in mind as we discuss issues, whether at a branch meeting, working the book sale, traveling together, or involved with any AAUW sponsored activity. We will be inclu sive and appreciate each and every member of our branch in all our interactions. So sharpen your pencils, get ready to learn and make new friends, and pack your back-packs with this reminder of who we are as AAUW members: “AAUW has been empowering women as individuals and as a community since 1881. For more than 130 years, we have worked together as a national grassroots organization to improve the lives of millions of women and their families.” Welcome to the new year, friends!! Becky O’Connor, President [email protected]

MAKING MEMORIES WITH BOOKS

Our 82ND Annual Book Sale!

Preparations are underway for our 2018 Book Sale which will be held Oct. 18-21 and Oct. 25-28 at the Northland Mall. Moving day will be Oct. 9 and the Book Sale work night will be Oct. 11. Please mark these important dates on your calendar. How you can help now: 1. Hand out Bookmarks and Flyers requesting books in as many places as possible. Extras are available downstairs at the Atlas Mill. 2. Help with book pick-up. Call Donna Cook or Stephanie Malaney to volunteer. When you pick up books, please recycle books which can’t be used for the sale. 3. Bring books you have collected to the Atlas Mill. When you come in the main entrance turn right and take the elevator to the basement. In the basement, take a right and go straight ahead to door #2 storage area which will be on your right. Stack full boxes of books inside on the left and put partially full boxes on the cart. The light is on a timer on a pole outside the storage room. 4. Attend summer and fall sortings at the Atlas Mill. They are taking place every Tuesday and Friday morning from 9 to 12 starting on August 3 until we move to the Northland Mall in October. On August 7, the first Tuesday of sorting, we plan to have lunch together at Fratello’s to celebrate the official start of the Book Sale season. 5. Collect as many books as possible. This year we have again decided not to accept donations of books from public libraries, because many of these books do not sell. Therefore, we need to make an extra effort to get other books. 6. Save empty boxes (especially paper boxes with lids), but please don’t bring them until we ask. Questions: Call any of the Book Sale Chairs Sorting: Betsy Mintern (832-9218), Christine Taylor 636-8153) & Shirley Schloemer (843-8888) Pick-Up: Donna Cook(427-6655)&Stephanie Malaney (734-6750) Publicity: Trish Brehm (739-8522) Business Mangers: Mary Ditter (766-1990) & Mary Grace (734-6379)

Time to order your AAUW T-shirt I’d like to take this opportunity to promote purchasing this year’s AAUW t-shirt. It’s a navy blue, 50/50 blend with white screen printing. AAUW is center front in a large font and because equity is still an issue below it in a smaller font. It’s a good looking t-shirt – very sharp and distinguishable. It stands out! And it strongly and simply states who we are. Dare I suggest that we all have one of these t-shirts in our closet? We can wear it at any AAUW event (it’s not dated) and it will surely catch the eye of anyone not familiar with our organization. See the order form below (note deadline). Thanks, Sylvia Bull

AAUW Appleton Branch Meeting May 17, 2018 First Methodist Church

After dinner, introductions of scholarship recipients, member recognition, and book sale announcements, President Judy

Goodnight called the meeting to order at 6:58 pm opening with the Mission Statement.. The minutes of the April meeting

were accepted as published. President Goodnight shared a state convention report. In the category of over 100 members,

Appleton placed third in the addition of new members with19. Congratulations to the members. We ranked as top branch in

giving to AAUW funds. We were third branch in giving per capita. There are three Bylaw Amendments for members to vote

for or against. 1. National board members would serve for a term of three years, staggered so there would be experience on

the board at all times. 2. Up to five national board members need not be members of AAUW. 3. The degree requirement for

AAUW membership would be removed.

Membership Vice President Margie Young reported that of the 159 members of our branch 100 have renewed. The re-

maining 59 will be contacted with a reminder. Checks go to Kathleen Gagnow, FVP. Our focus will be new members this

summer. The drawing to stimulate membership renewal resulted in the following names: Pat Nelson. Diane Harper, Melissa

Boveroux, and Faye Binsfeld.

Program Vice President Helene Iverson asked for programming suggestions to be submitted to Jeanne Seitz or Joan

Moeschberger. Helene made a request of the membership for timely reservations for upcoming events.

Finance Vice President Kathleen Gagnow shared a report now filed in the Secretary’s minutes.

Public Policy Chair Jacqui Klimaszewski shared a slide show of the year in public policy. The goal this year was to involve

more people in public policy – success! Members of the committee were thanked. The slide show: Sept. – collected items

and money donations for the Fox Valley Literacy Council, Oct. – signing post cards to support the redistricting of Fair Maps,

Nov. writing post cards for legislatures to support the Dream Act, Dec. collecting books to support literacy through APL

“Reach Out and Read.” Jan. – completing post cards supporting the issues around clean water, Feb. – encouraging our legis-

latures with post cards to address issues of student debt, March – (Public Policy Day) sharing concerns regarding the eroding

away of Title IX, April – passing out Pay Day candy bars for Equal Pay Day and signing post cards to support issues around

Brain Hygiene. Reminder: sign up for Two Minute Activist. Judy Goodnight suggested members should become more famil-

iar with AAUW public policy. When contacting a representative regarding an issue be sure to state that you are a member of

the American Association of University Women.

Tech Savvy Chairs Jacqui and Stephanie reminded members the date of the next event is March 9. Planning will take place

over the summer: Girl Savvy, Adult Program, STEM, and Key Note Speaker.
