The GIT Mentoring Program is designed to inform and inspire high school girls about the many opportunities available to women in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, recognized as STEM. During this first session, we’ll hear from four panelists at various stages in their academic and professional careers in STEM fields. We’ll learn about the choices, successes and struggles they’ve experienced to achieve their goals.

GIT Talks: STEM Career Exploration Panel
Speaker: Linda Powell, Chief Data Officer, Consumer Financial Protection Linda Powell is the Chief Data Officer of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Previously, she was the CDO at the Office of Financial Research within the U.S. Treasury Department as well as the Chief of the Data Management and Analysis section at the Federal Reserve Board. She has a BA in Economics from Rutgers University and an MS in Quantitative Finance from George Washington University. She has over 25 years of experience in the finance industry including a money center bank, the Federal Reserve Bank of NY, Board of Governors, OFR, and CFPB.
Speaker: Veronica (Ronni) McTier, Energy Efficiency Manager, ICF International Ronni McTier was born in Louisville, KY and was graduated from Sullivan University in Mechanical Engineering. She has lived in the DC area for four years. She currently works for ICF International as an Energy Efficiency Manager and provides a platform for industrial companies to reduce their energy consumption in the state of Maryland. As a result of these efforts, she reduces the carbon footprint which helps to maintain a cleaner, greener environment.
She has also volunteered for numerous organizations in the political arena, arts and local organizations. These include the Annual Legislative Conference, Dallas Museum of Arts, Sisters for Charity, Louisville International Cultural Center, Big Brother and Big Sister Program and Habitat for America.
She is especially excited to participant at this event because she is in the process of starting a foundation called G.E.M.S. which means Girls in Energy Management and Sustainability, to educate, promote, attract the interest of young women to pursue energy opportunities and advance their careers in STEM fields.
Speaker: Justin Molineaux, Co-Founder, Chief Technology Officer, Baas Bikes
Justin Molineaux is the Co-Founder & CTO of Baas Bikes - a startup that uses smartphones, bluetooth technology, geospatial analysis, and machine learning to create bikeshare systems from existing bike racks and ordinary bikes. Prior to Baas Bikes, Justin’s career has spanned academia - where he built data visualization tools to support bioinformatics research at Virginia Tech, government - where he designed and built computer systems for NASA and the FCC, and the private sector - where most notably he led engineering teams for the nation’s largest online retailer of custom apparel, CustomInk.
With each new experience throughout his career in STEM, Justin has witnessed a consistent trend: diverse teams tend to produce better results than non-diverse teams. It is this trend that has compelled him to become an advocate for more inclusive education and hiring in STEM fields.
Speaker: Dr. Allena Willis Kennerly, Founder of Smashing Smiles Orthodontics
Dr. Allena Willis Kennerly has created hundreds of smashing smiles in her 10 years of experience in Orthodontics. Dr. Willis successfully passed the American Board of Orthodontics’ written examination and graduated from an American Board of Orthodontics approved residency program at New York University in 2005. As a former Associate Professor at Howard University, College of Dentistry, Dr. Willis taught Growth and Development to post-graduate residents. She currently volunteers her time for occasional lunch and learns for university residents and is also a current mentor for the students with an interest in dentistry and orthodontics.
Dr. Willis completed Post-Graduate Orthodontic training at New York University, after earning a Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree from The University of Medicine and Dentistry, Newark, New Jersey (UMDNJ). Dr. Willis has also obtained a second orthodontic license in the state of Virginia.
Prior to attending UMDNJ, Dr. Willis successfully completed a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Spelman College in Atlanta. A native of Nevada, she graduated with high honors from Valley High School in Las Vegas.
Dr. Willis’ hobbies include fashion, traveling with her husband and reading to her two children. She also enjoys being a style muse and loves all things beautiful. Dr. Willis is dedicated to motivating children to achieve their personal and educational goals.
MEET THE GIT DC TEAM
DC Chair: Jenny Oh
Jenny Oh is the current Chair of the Girls in Technology Washington DC STEM Mentor Protege Program. She has led Girls in Technology Virginia since 2013, and is now leading GIT’s expansion into DC. She received the 2016 Washington DC Women in Technology Leadership Award for hercontributions to developing women and youth from the classroom to the boardroom.
Jenny was born in Seoul, South Korea and grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. She has an undergraduate degree in finance, and a graduate degree in information technology management, both from the
University of Maryland. She is currently an Associate at Booz Allen Hamilton and works on financial and technology projects. She has always had very strong both right brain and left brain, so to balance out the STEM degrees and career, Jenny has taken collegiate coursework and has industry certifications in fine arts and in digital media production. Her artistic and media talents combined with her business acumen and technical abilities, she has consulted local and international organizations to develop digital content and strategies for various campaigns and events. She has also produced television shows highlighting the achievements of women, economic development, and social good in DC, and even fashion!
When she is not in the office, in the studio, or on the front lines of community activism, she is off on a bike, bus, train, plane, or boat exploring the global backyard. Traveling has opened her eyes to gender and economic inequalities around the globe. She has dedicated the past several years to actively leading organizations that provide professional development and education to females, youth, and minorities. She is proud to be part of Girls in Technology, and hopes that we can collectively make a difference for all.
