The talk will be held in English and is open to the public.

Theanalogybetweenbrainandcomputerisevencloserwhenitcomestomemcomputing,anewcomputationalparadigmwherememoryplaysamajorrole.Atthenextcolloquium,MassimilianoDiVentrawillexplainthenewapproach,whichhedeveloped.Thehumanbrainisapowerfulprocessorandveryefficientfromanenergypointofview.Isitpossible,heasks,toduplicatethiscapacityinasolidstate,withadevicebasedonthephysicalpropertiesofthematerial?How?AcrucialaspectforDiVentraistocreateamachinethatusesmemorytobothstoreandprocessinformationmuchinthewayourbraindoes.Theapproachitselfwasnamedmem-computingtoemphasizethiscentralroleofmemory.Inhistalk,thescientistwillexplainthecharacteristicsofthisnewparadigmindetail,focusingonmathematicalaspectsthatdescribehowthesecomputersoperate.Thecolloquiumisopentothepublicandwillbeofatechnicalandscientificnature.ThetalkwillbeheldinEnglish.Nopriorreservationisnecessary.TheSpeakerMassimilianoDiVentraisanaccomplishedPhysicistwhoobtainedhisundergraduatedegreeinPhysicsfromtheUniversityofTriesteanddidhisPhDstudiesattheEcolePolytechniqueFederaledeLausanne.HewasaVisitingScientistatIBM(ThomasWatsonResearchCenter)andAssistantProfessoratVanderbiltUniversity.Later,heworkedasaProfessorinthePhysicsDepartmentatVirginiaTech.HewaspromotedtoAssociateProfessorin2003andmovedtothePhysicsDepartmentoftheUniversityofCalifornia,SanDiego,in2004wherehewaspromotedtoFullProfessorin2006.HehasbeenavisitingprofessoratmanyinternationaluniversitiesincludingSISSA.Authorofnearly200scientificpapers,includingsomeofthemostcitedinternationallyinrecentyears,DiVentra's research interests are in the theory of electronic and transport properties ofnanoscalesystems,non-equilibriumstatisticalmechanics,DNAsequencing/polymerdynamicsinnanopores,andmemoryeffects innanostructuresforapplications inunconventionalcomputingandbiophysics,includingtheparadigmofmemcomputing.IMAGE:
