JUNE 2016 Issue #283 Prez Sez Well the warm weather has finally arrived. The grass needs cutting, flowers need to be planted, golf balls need to be hit, tennis courts are active and residents are out walking again. On the bad side, pesky bugs have started to appear and worst of all people are outside wearing shorts! A number of improvements have finally come to WOTL. The Resale sign kiosk is up, the wine barrel garbage containers have been put out at strategic spots and are being used, thank you. The kitchen is being redone and a real challenge with the floor was encountered but Frontier has been good enough to try and work around events that need that facility. The pool didn’t open on May 24 th due to the availability of the pool company and the Health inspector visit. Just a reminder, any comments or concerns about the pool should be directed to the Frontier office only. The Board has formed an advisory committee to look into the audio visual improvements needed in the main hall for existing and coming activities. A report will be made to the Board for consideration and action. We have been working to organize the setup and takedown of chairs and tables for regular activities and events at the Rec Centre. When staff is available they will do what they can. The problems arise when night time activities are in rooms that need to be clear for early in the morning. Prez Sez

Well the warm weather has finally arrived.

The pool didn’t open on May 24th due to the availability of the pool company and the Health inspector visit.

Also activities that occur on weekends will need to factor in setup and takedown. I would ask groups to pitch in and do their part for these activities. If this is a real problem, please talk to me.

Just a reminder, the Relay for Life is taking place in Picton on Friday, June 10th, and into Saturday morning. WOTL will have a presence there and walkers and donations to walkers are still gratefully accepted.

We continue to work with Frontier/Sandbank and Daimler to resolve issues and improve your community.

A reminder also that the next General Meeting is Tuesday, June 14th, at 7 p.m. Bryan West, President, WOLRA

Board Sez

The month of May was a busy one with multiple events at the Rec Centre.

The Garage & Bake Sale was a huge success thanks to the efforts of everyone involved. The Woodworkers’ BBQ was very well attended, the food delicious and it was great to see the display of some of the beautiful items they have crafted. The Quilting Queens hosted a Coffee Morning displaying many of the quilts they have completed and some they are working on. Be on the lookout for tickets for this year’s Quilt Raffle, it’s a beauty.

The “dust” seems to have settled some with the opening of a new construction road, but the work on the kitchen isn’t progressing as fast as we had hoped. Problems removing the old tiles which were cemented in have caused some challenges. The current plan is to level the floor and then apply the new flooring with the work hopefully completed in June. The new solar lights in the overflow parking aren’t providing the amount of light deemed necessary. These concerns along with a number of other things are being followed up.

To recap the financial side, the month of April saw a total of $116.75 (calendar sales, coffee & donuts, 50/50 draw proceeds and membership dues) in revenue and expenses of $1382.70 (Printcraft for newsletters, kitchen supplies, the Times, garage sale expenses, mileage charge and condolences). In terms of monies held in trust, the Fitness Club increased its total by $1372.95 and the Golden Voices had an expense of $214.65.

The 2016/2017 WOLRA Membership Campaign is well underway with roughly a third of the residents renewing as of this writing. The team will be selling memberships at the Pancake Breakfast on June 4, in the Library on June 8 and 16, as well as at the June 14 General Meeting.

Wellington on the Lake Structure (WOTL 101)

WOTL was originally developed by Daimler Retirement Parks Ltd in the 1990s. The original plans that were approved by the County included all lands that we now know as Wellington on the Lake, including the latest Phase III. Daimler developed the 145 homes located in the leasehold side (west area of Prince Edward Drive) as well as 45 freehold properties on the east side of Prince Edward Drive. Leasehold properties all pay monthly rent to Daimler

who remains as the landlord to leasehold homes. These leasehold homes are subject to Daimler Lease Agreements and are protected under the Landlord and Tenants Act.

As a point of interest, in 1992, the first 30 residents created a Resident’s Association. Effective December 5th 2003, Frontier Homes (now Sandbank Homes Inc) acquired all the property at Wellington on the Lake except for the lands that are directly occupied under land lease agreements and common area lands and roads. As part of this transaction, Sandbank Homes Inc., through their affiliated company Frontier Management (2036182 Ontario Inc.), agreed to provide management services and capital requirements as per Daimler’s obligations and standards, to the leasehold residents of Wellington on the Lake in exchange for the common fee income. Frontier provides management services to Sandbank Homes residents.

Conrad Guziewicz maintains the title of President of Frontier Management. Graham Shannon maintains the title of President of Sandbank Homes. Daimler is owned by Mr. Leo Nipsagen and Mr. Franz Krenn who both now reside in Belgium. Daimler is represented in Canada by Doreen Kendall of Belleville.

2016 Hospice

Update

Somewhat challenged by the rain, the hilly route and breaking no land-speed records, the Muffin Marchers completed the 5km hike on May 1st as forecast. Thanks to your most generous support we were able to contribute a whopping $1169 to this worthy cause which directly benefits the people of the County. For those who made a donation of $20 or more, tax receipts will be forthcoming from the Hospice organization. Thanks again for your support! Chris, Joyce, Carol and Daphne

LAST CALL FOR RELAY FOR LIFE 2016

Over the past 6 years the local Relay for Life has raised more than $1 million. The money that has been raised goes into a cancer research program at Queens University in Kingston and to help provide transportation for people in the County who are fighting the disease. Our Wellington on the Lake Team has

pledged to raise $1000, but it would be terrific if we can surpass this goal. If you would like to help us raise funds for this worthy cause please do so. You can come out and support us or join in the Survivor Lap that takes place during the evening. Another option is to purchase a luminary in remembrance of a friend or family member which will be lit up at the event. The focus of the Relay is to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones and to continue the ongoing search for a cure. The event takes place on June 10th at the Picton Fairground. If you have already contributed then THANK YOU for your support; if not and you would like to do so then please contact me and somebody on our WOTL team will be in touch with you.

To All New & Existing Shufflers Finally and hopefully our weather will cooperate for all of us to start playing the wonderful, fun and relaxing game of Shuffling. Weather

permitting, I hope that we can start playing on all 4 courts starting June 7th on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 or 10:30 a.m. both days. I am hoping that the new lines and numbers will have been painted by the time we start playing; I have asked that they be done by June 1st. I would appreciate your patience and understanding if they are NOT done. Hope to see ALL Y'ALL on the courts come June 7th. Questions? Rene & Donna St. James, Coordinators x3050 Cell # 613-970-6000

A Supportive Community

I just wanted to express my appreciation for the support that I received after breaking my ankle this winter. I cannot count the numerous offerings, including food, chocolate (much appreciated), puzzles, movies and people

dropping by or calling to ask how I was doing. Since then I have heard that this support goes on throughout the community in a big way and is a long standing tradition at WOTL. We will be sure to “pay it forward” to others in the future. I am now thankfully back on two feet and want to thank all those who helped us throughout my recovery. What a great place to live! Sheila Hanbury

Audio Visual Update

At the last General Meeting, on May 10, the members voted to budget up to $3500 to continue updating our audio visual equipment. A sub committee of five residents will be working on this and will make recommendations to the Board. Hopefully, we will be able to purchase a new television, as well as some cabinetry that will house our equipment safely, and make it all user friendly. We will keep you informed of our progress. Thank You Nancy B!

Thank you to Nancy Barton for so effectively organizing and coordinating the WOTL Garage & Bake Sale once again! Excellent job! The WOTL Community

2016 Bake Sale Once again, it seems it takes a village, in this case it takes a community to pull together and make our annual Garage/Bake Sale a success. No one ever does it alone. It takes volunteers and then it takes the residents of this community, WOTL, to donate their time and their baked

goods, which never last very long and this year was no exception. By 10 a.m. almost all baked goods were sold. I extend my personal thanks to all my 'helpers' and sincere appreciation to all who donated their sweet goodies. In preparation for next year, please remember if you can no longer bake, a monetary donation, specific to the Bake Sale, would be much appreciated, as are baked goods that have been purchased in the wonderful bakeries/grocery stores all over the county. This year, our sales were supported by sweets/goodies donated by the following community businesses. In turn, when we are out and about, let's support these businesses and maybe even say thanks for supporting our Bake Sale.

Lakeshore Farms, Wellington ~ Saylor's Cafe in Bloomfield ~ The Pink Lunch Pail, Picton ~ Wickedly Sweet Bakery, Wellington ~ The Pastry House, Picton ~ The Bean Counter Cafe, Picton ~ Schroedter's Deli Market Cafe County Rd 1 Picton ~ The Sweet Spot Bakery, Picton ~ Perfect Lil Bake Shop, Glenora Rd., Picton

Thanks again everyone. Michelle Loyer, Bake Sale Coordinator

Garage & Bake Sale Report

We had a record breaking Garage and Bake Sale, CLEARING $6070! We had more volunteers than ever before who worked tirelessly to make this year's event such a success. The different sections were organized so neatly, with the Christmas decorations corner, the books and puzzles section, the clothing boutique, the baking tables, the three gorgeous raffle baskets, the coffee and donuts table, and the jewellery sections all looking so professional and

inviting. The outdoor section and clothing boutique sold more than ever before. The volunteer lunch was delicious. Everything was cleaned up in under an hour thanks to the efficient and hardworking crew. So many people commented on the cohesiveness of our large group who made it all look so easy. Thank you to everyone who contributed articles, baking, and their precious time to this fund raising event. All the money raised stays in Wellington on the Lake and is used to enhance the lives of our residents. What did not get sold was either given to either the Foodbank or the Community Care Thrift Shop, puzzles went to Hallowell House, and the remainder was boxed up and delivered to volunteers from the Picton Hospice for their own garage sale. Everything stayed in the county. If you have any suggestions or comments that we could use next year, please let me or any of the volunteers know. We are always open to new ideas. Nancy Barton

Mystery Gift Bag This article was previously put in the February newsletter but may have been too early for the Snowbirds, as the gift bag has still not been claimed.

In December a Christmas gift bag along with a calendar were left in our entryway at 16 Monroe Court. The gift card was addressed only with "16" and the card read "Thanks again and all the best". Was this meant for the previous owners Ethel and Peter or another No. 16 altogether? If you were the generous soul who left this please call Richard or Rita at x3783.

New Development

Shortly it will become compulsory for senior citizens to carry not only their ID, but also their insurance documents, their prescription list, a compact version of their medical file, the statement declaring if they want to be resuscitated after a heart attack, stroke, etc. etc. Consequently, a lot of paperwork will have to be carried when senior citizens go out the front door or when they travel. Specifically for this purpose, a special “Senior USB Stick” has been developed.

Wow! Two Bites of information. Blue Tooth technology to fit your lifestyle. Expanded Memory can be arranged. Something to chew on.

Shuffle Board Courts Spring Clean-Up Blitz

Thursday May 19th I had the privilege of working with about 12 volunteers. I would like to thank the following for their excellent cooperation in completing and doing a very good job at all the chores that had to be done on all 4 courts:

Rolf Hagen, for sweeping and pulling out weeds on the courts, plus pressure washing the Uni-Stone (dirty job to say the least, the pictures on the W.O.T.L. Photo web site will prove it).

Sweepers and weed pullers also consisted of George Ayton, Gerry and Martha Ippersiel, Gerry Pierce, Ron Robb, Bill Boultbee, Merv Kreutz and Donna St. James.

The 4 score boards were installed by Ron Robb & Merv Kreutz.

The back stops were repaired by Bill Boultbee.

All of the 32 Discs were waxed by George Ayton.

Yours truly (Rene St. James) mowed and did the weed whacking.

Last but not least, we had 4 ladies who rolled up their sleeves to weed and pull out the dead bushes from the Emmett O'Connor Memorial Garden. Thank you very much to Donna, Theresa, Elaine and Martha.

Looking forward to seeing ALL Y`ALL on the courts June 7th @ 9 or 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays (your choice). Rene St James

LOOKING FOR:

Does anyone out there have photos, digital or otherwise, of recent events here in WOTL? There are no photos on our website of the December 2015 Christmas dinners, 2015 New Year’s Eve party, 2016 Rabbie Burns celebration & Scotch Tasting and 2016 St. Patrick’s Day party. So if you have digital photos of any of these events please email them to the newsletter at [email protected] and we will ensure that the webmaster gets them to post on our website. If you have regular photos, please lend them to us so they can be scanned and posted on the website too.

If you have old photos of the early days of WOTL we would be interested in those as well. They would be scanned and returned to you. Just phone Al at 613-885-3160 and he will be happy to come pick them up. Please help us to build up our WOTL website history for all to enjoy.

Thank you to Marilyn Hastie for her MOST excellent work creating and organizing photo albums with pictures from 1992-2001 (stored in our Library) which we have scanned and are now posted on our website (http://www.wotl.ca/heritage.html) thanks to our hard-working Web Master, Ken Killingbeck. From the Editor

This month marks the one year anniversary of the new format for the Neighbourly News. One year ago I volunteered to take on the daunting position of Editor of our newsletter; I was absolutely terrified and certain I would regret it. As it turns out, I absolutely LOVE doing it. Hopefully when I decide to pass the baton on to another (not yet!), he or she will love it as much as I do. Thank you all for your patience (especially that of my ever vigilant Editorial Board!) and you the readership. Thank you also to Gerry Ippersiel for emailing the newsletter out to

everyone who signed up for it each month and Ken Killingbeck for EVERYTHING he does to help me, but in particular for posting the Neighbourly News on the WOTL website. A toast to another year; “TO US ALL”!

If you have given your email address to E.com’s Gerry Ippersiel at [email protected] you will receive the “Neighbourly News and Calendar” by email. These are also on the WOLRA website, in COLOUR @ www.wotl.ca. Deadline for the July newsletter is June 23rd at 6 p.m. Submissions can be made by e-mail to the newsletter mailbox at [email protected] or left in the Submissions and Suggestions Blue Box in the Library of the Rec Centre). Note that when a submission is made to the newsletter by email, notification of receipt will be sent to the submitter. If you do not receive a response after several days, please contact any of the members on the Editorial Board to confirm receipt of your submission.

6 cups (1.5 L) popped corn (about ¼ cup/60 mL kernels) 1½ cups (375 mL) chopped mixed nuts ½ cup (125 mL) green pumpkin seeds ½ cup (125 mL) packed brown sugar ¼ cup (60 mL) corn syrup ¼ cup (60 mL) dark rum or brandy 2 tbsp (30 mL) butter 2 tsp (10 mL) sea salt ¼ tsp (1 mL) baking soda ¼ tsp (1 mL) cayenne pepper

D I R E C T I O N S

1. Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C). Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or butter lightly.

2. Combine popped corn, nuts and pumpkin seeds in a large bowl. Set aside. 3. Combine sugar, corn syrup, brandy and butter in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium

heat, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Increase heat to high and boil rapidly, without stirring, for 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in salt, baking soda and cayenne.

4. Quickly pour over popped corn mixture in bowl and toss to evenly coat. Spread onto baking sheet as evenly as possible. Bake, stirring twice, for 15 minutes or until mixture is glazed and nuts are toasted. Let cool slightly. Makes 8 cups (2 L)

Submitted by Kevin & Sheila Hanbury (taste-tested by the Editorial Board and found YUMMY yet very spicy so may be too hot for some; you could leave out the cayenne pepper or put less, 2 of us found it PERFECT as is!).
