We are pleased to welcome Dr. Sean Kim to BSP to continue his lecture series on The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This month he will speak about The Temple of Artemis and The Statue of Zeus.

Artemis, daughter of Zeus and Leto, and twin sister of Apollo, was goddess of chastity, hunting, wild animals, forests, childbirth and fertility. Convincing her father to

grant her wishes, Artemis desired to remain forever chaste and unmarried and always to be equipped for hunting. The goddess was also associated with the moon and was the patron of young women, particularly brides-to-be, who dedicated their toys to her as symbols of the transition to full adulthood and the assumption of a wife’s responsibilities. As a deity of fertility, the goddess was particularly revered at Ephesos, where the famous temple of Artemis (c. 550 BCE) was regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Zeus was the king of the Olympian gods and the supreme deity in Greek religion. Often referred to as the Father, as the god of thunder and the “cloud gatherer” he controlled the weather, offered signs and omens and generally dispensed justice, guaranteeing order among both the gods and humanity from his seat high on Mount Olympus. This statue was truly an ideal representation of the best classical Greek style.

Harvard-educated, Dr. Kim is an Associate Professor of Asian Studies at Central Missouri University and a very active member of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Feel free to invite friends to join us for this lecture. Mark the date and time on your calendar at 1:30 on Wednesday, January 6, in the Westport Room.

BRÁULIO BOSI TO PERFORM GUITAR RECITAL AT BSP

Born in Brazil in 1987, Bráulio Bosi began his musical life playing electric guitar when he was 14 years old and began his studies of classical guitar when, at the age of 18, he was admitted to the Federal University of Espírito Santo as a musical education major. After graduation, Bosi moved to Oklahoma City where he obtained his master's degree in guitar performance from Oklahoma City University while taking guitar lessons with Michael Fresonke. Currently, Bráulio studies with Douglas Niedt at the UMKC Conservatory, where he is pursuing his doctoral degree in guitar performance.

Throughout his young career as a musician, Bosi has won prizes in five competitions, performed in several states in Brazil and the USA, participated in dozens of guitar festivals and played in the master classes of some of the most respected guitarists in the world. You won’t want to miss Bosi’s soulful strumming at 3:00 on Friday, January 15, in the Chapel of the Epiphany.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

So the holidays are behind us for another year. Wrong! The new year begins with the feast of the Epiphany, which memorializes the three wise men who had, well, an epiphany (hence the name of the feast). They had a revelation about the Christ child, an experience so powerful that it impelled them to make a long and dangerous journey to Bethlehem. The feast of the Epiphany reminds us to look for the revelations of God’s love that abound in our lives – family, friends, music, nature… It reminds us of this as well: that we ourselves reveal God’s love – or not – through our own actions and responses to others. Something to think about as we ponder worthy New Year’s resolutions!

— Chaplain Kathy Hall

The 1940 movie, Rebecca, is the story of a young woman (Joan Fontaine) who marries a fascinating widower only to learn that she must live in the shadow of his former wife, Rebecca, who died mysteriously several years earlier. The young wife must come to grips with the terrible secret of her handsome, cold husband, Max De Winter (Laurence Olivier). She must also deal with the jealous, obsessed Mrs. Danvers (Judith Anderson), the housekeeper, who will not accept her as the mistress of the house. Experience this Hitchcockian gothic tale that won an Academy Award in cinematography with our movie expert, Robert Butler, at 2:00 on Friday, January 8, in the

Westport Room.

JIM TIPTON TRAVELOGUE: “THE IDIOSYNCRASIES OF EUROPE”

Jim Tipton is a retired professional with a passion for lifelong learning — both as the student and the teacher. This is the passion that fuels his very busy retirement!

Tipton serves as a docent at The Wornall/Majors House Museums, is a Dave Ramsey coordinator, a tutor for the Center School District and a mentor for the Blue Valley School District CAPS program, plus he is on the Spiritual Care Team at Saint Joseph Hospital and is involved in the educational programs at his church. His thirst for knowledge has led him to many travel adventures, and we’re fortunate he will be coming this month to share about one of his favorite trips. He enjoys blending education and entertainment in his

myriad presentations, which range from travelogues, local history and a “People, Places and Things” series to a “Then and Now” series on the history of holidays. This will be Tipton’s first time presenting at Bishop Spencer Place, and he will be presenting a travelogue on The Idiosyncrasies of Europe — a topic that is sure to include new and interesting facts, even for those who have traveled to Europe many times. Please join us for this presentation at 3:00 on Wednesday, January 20, in the Westport Room.

The celebrated organ recitals return this month, and we are happy to welcome Thomas R. Vozzella, DMA, the Director of Music at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Dr. Vozzella serves as the parish musician/organist at the church, and is also the American Choral Directors Association National Repertoire and Standards Chair for Music in Worship. This is the anticipated kickoff of our series, Organ Pipes in the Chapel, highlighting the passionate music that rises from our Schoenstein Organ. We plan on this being a bi-monthly affair and we hope to see you at 3:00 on Thursday, January 21, in the Chapel of the Epiphany so you can experience the first gem of the series.

Chair volleyball is all the rage and we are excited to be starting a class right here at BSP! Chair volleyball is a much greater workout than expected. With movement comes benefits to the cardiovascular and respiratory systems while players can also see an improvement in their hand-eye coordination. This will not be a competitive activity, but more of an opportunity for residents to get together, socialize and have lots of laughs and fun! We can’t wait for the premiere class which will be at 2:00 on Friday, January 22, in the Westport Room.

DAN MEERS — AKA KC WOLF — TO GIVE INSPIRATIONAL TALK AT BSP

KC Wolf is one of the most entertaining mascots in professional sports and is the first NFL mascot to be inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame. We’re not revealing any secrets, but under that costume is the accomplished Dan Meers and he is in high demand as a humorous and motivational speaker. His life experiences have afforded him the philosophy that laughter and a cheerful heart are good medicine.

Dan’s optimism, faith and love for life are contagious and make him an inspiration to many. Please come to meet and enjoy KC Wolf at 3:00 on Thursday, January 14, in the Westport

Room. We think you will be surprised at what you learn!

“One of the brightest stars in the Kansas City Jazz firmament” says Dr. Chuck Berg of JazzTimes Magazine. Pianist Joe Cartwright has lived, performed and taught in the Kansas City area for more than thirty years. He is a graduate of the UMKC Conservatory of Music and leads his own duo, trio and quartet, all while currently serving as musical director for the critically-acclaimed NPR radio show 12th Street Jump. Joe has performed on and produced numerous recordings.

Mr. Cartwright has been a featured performer with the Kansas City Symphony and the Independence Symphony, and his trio was featured in a performance at the 1992 World’s Fair in Seville, Spain, as representatives of Kansas City Jazz. We are so pleased he is here, thanks to Country Club Bank, at 3:00 on Monday, January 11, in the Madison Living Room.

A special thank you to all residents, family members, board members and others who donated to our Employee Holiday Fund —

with much gratitude and appreciation for your support throughout the year!

Do you itch to get your hands in the dirt? The Garden Committee is made up of people who like flowers and gardens, experienced or not. Their purpose is to manage the Memorial Garden and resident garden plots: this includes planning new plantings, shopping for plants and consulting with John Campbell of Signature Landscaping. You don’t have to dig or plant to enjoy serving on the Garden Committee. Committee meetings are held in the Abbey at 2:00 p.m. on the fourth Monday of most months. If you’d like to join the committee, please call Barbara Weary, the incoming chairman, by February 1, 2016. — Article written by Barbara Lee
