“SAINT ANDREW’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH PRESENTS”

DR. SEAN KIM ON JANUARY 6 AT 1:30 IN THE WESTPORT ROOM

Dr. Sean Kim will return on January 6 for the last installment in his History of the Great Cities of Asia series. His lecture this month will be “The History of Saigon.” In the 1690s, Nguyễn Hữu Cảnh, a Vietnamese noble, was sent by the Nguyễn rulers of Huế to establish Vietnamese administrative structures in the Mekong Delta and its surroundings. Control of the city and the area passed to the Vietnamese, who gave the city the official name of Gia Định. This name remained until the time of French conquest in the 1860s, when the occupying force adopted the name Saigon for the city, a westernized form of the traditional name. After the Vietnam War and the unification of Vietnam, it was renamed Ho Chi Minh City.

As of the Census of 2010, Ho Chi Minh City had a population 8,382,287 registered residents plus migrant workers as well as a metropolitan population of 10 million. Although the city takes up just 0.6% of the country's land area, it contains almost 10% of the population of Vietnam and makes up about 1/3 of Vietnam’s GDP. The economy consists of industries ranging from mining, seafood processing, agriculture and construction, to tourism, finance, industry and trade. Harvard educated, Dr. Kim is an Associate Professor of Asian Studies at Central Missouri University and a very active member of Saint Andrew’s. Please come and also invite your friends to join us for this last lecture on The History of the Great Cities of Asia series. Mark the date and time on your calendar for Tuesday, January 6, at 1:30 in the Westport Room!

BRAULIO BOSI TO PERFORM GUITAR RECITAL AT BSP

Born in Brazil in 1987, Bráulio Bosi began his musical life playing electric guitar when he was 14 years old and began his studies of classical guitar when, at the age of 18, he was admitted to the Federal University of Espírito Santo as a musical education major. After graduation, Bosi moved to Oklahoma City where he obtained his master's degree in guitar performance from Oklahoma City University while

taking guitar lessons with Michael Fresonke. Currently, Bráulio Bosi studies with Douglas Niedt at the UMKC Conservatory, where he is pursuing his doctoral degree in guitar performance. Throughout his young career as a musician, Bosi has won prizes in five competitions, performed in several states of Brazil and the USA, participated in dozens of guitar festivals and played in the master classes of some of the most respected guitarists in the world. You won’t want to miss Bosi’s soulful strumming at 3:00 on Monday, January 12, in the Madison Living Room.

So 2015 is upon us and resolution is in the air – New Year’s resolutions, that is. There seem to be two major groups of New Year’s resolvers: those who generate veritable litanies of resolutions they can’t possibly keep; and those who don’t make any resolutions at all, possibly because they got sick of generating litanies doomed to failure. Experts tells us that resolutions are good for us – in moderation. If we stick to a few realistic goals we are more likely to succeed in our efforts to change. One physician suggests that we make only three resolutions per year, including one for the spirit (in addition to one for the mind and one for the body). Where are we spiritually right now? What might the Lord be inviting us to work on in 2015? Maybe our practices of prayer, worship or spiritual reading. Maybe greater generosity with our more intangible treasures: our smiles, our patience, our forgiveness. Whatever our resolutions turn out to be, may we be blessed at the start of this New Year, and may we grow in grace and wisdom throughout the coming months!

— Chaplain Kathy Hall

All the poses and exercises are practiced while sitting in a chair or using the chair for balance, and chair yoga is suitable for all ages and abilities. Beginning January 8, training will be available for Chair Yoga Level 1 Certification. Attendance at six of the eight sessions is required for certification. Classes are open to all, whether for certification or to simply reap the benefits of yoga. The class will be held each Thursday at 10:30, led by Sally King.

KANSAS CITY’S “BEST KEPT JAZZ SECRET” TO PERFORM AT BSP

“Wild Woman” Millie Edwards is quoted as saying she was destined to be a singer/musician. She started playing piano at only four, and the viola at ten. She credits Elton John’s “Your Song” for helping her shift into high gear with her music. “It was rock with a classical feel, and I said, ‘I could do that.’ I purchased every Elton John songbook I could and started doing coffee houses.” Edwards is known in Kansas City for her big voice and wide vocal range. She has been a regular on the Kansas City jazz and blues circuit, performing at the best

clubs and in radio and television spots. Music critics have praised her as revealing “a confident, full-range voice.” Her singing has been characterized as being both honest and dynamic, and her phrasing is credited for finding new reflections from old, familiar words. We’re fortunate to have Edwards coming to BSP again! You won’t want to miss her special performance at 3:00 on Friday, January 16, in the Madison Living Room.

“PROVENCE TO PARIS” PRESENTED BY BILL BUCKNER

Sunny, colorful Provence, beloved land of blue skies, sparkling seas, ancient stone villages and colorful food markets! Few regions offer as many iconic images of France than Provence, and those picture postcard views are still there to be discovered, as experienced by resident Bill Buckner last October. Traveling through Provence to Paris, Bill captured many photographic images representative of France's Roman and religious heritage, and wine and food excellence. But there’s lots more. Their "cowboys" are gallant and brave, and their landscape is charming everywhere. Ending his trip in Paris, Bill enjoyed the many treasures of Paris: renowned museums, architectural landmarks and, of course, haute cuisine.

Join us for this spectacular presentation at 3:00 on Tuesday, January 20, in the Westport Room.

KC CENTRAL LIBRARY PRESENTS

“PRIMARY PERSPECTIVES: THE MEDIA’S TAKE ON KC’S 2015 ELECTIONS”

Kansas Citians go to the polls in April and June to elect a mayor and 12 city council members who will direct the city for the next four years. What are the talking points? The priorities? Launching a second season of Citizens Project forums co-sponsored by the nonpartisan Citizens Association of Kansas City, a panel of local media representatives — including KCUR’s Steve Kraske and the Kansas City Star’s Lynn Horsley — identifies and explores the issues the candidates ought to address. Join us for this riveting forum on Wednesday, January 21, at the Kansas City Central Library. The BSP bus will depart at 5:45. Please sign up with the concierge in the Madison or Jefferson lobbies.

THE CELTIQUE TRIO PRESENTS AUTHENTIC CELTIC SONG & DANCE

HISTORIC KANSAS CITY PRESENTS: “A HISTORY OF KANSAS CITY NEIGHBORHOODS”

The origins of Kansas City date to the early 1800s, when French fur traders arrived by the Missouri River and built rough cabins along the river. The town of Kansas was formed in 1838 and a trail connecting the river to the Santa Fe Trail in the town of Westport was established. Several years later commercial buildings were popping up along the river bluffs. When a number of railways and the first bridge across the river were completed after the Civil War, the city’s population boomed.

Kansas City’s neighborhoods provide a wealth of historical information and a variety of architecture, which traces the movement of the residents from the early days of settlement to surrounding neighborhoods. Join us as we learn more about the neighborhoods we call home as Historic Kansas City (HKC) presents “A History of Kansas City Neighborhoods”. Since its founding in 1974, HKC has been the only greater Kansas City nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of the area’s heritage, neighborhoods and historic built environment.

MOVIE CLASSIC WITH FILM CRITIC ROBERT BUTLER We’re in for a special treat — Robert Butler, former film critic for the Kansas City Star, is coming back to BSP to screen the 1946 Alfred Hitchcock classic Notorious, starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman.

Butler will introduce the film, which follows Alicia Huberman as she takes to drink and men following the conviction of her German father for treason against the U.S. A government agent asks her to spy on a group of her father's Nazi friends operating out of Rio de Janeiro, and a romance develops between the two.

Join us for this special screening at 2:00 on Friday, January 2, in the Westport Room.

IMPORTANT SEMINAR: IDENTITY THEFT & SELF PROTECTION

You may think that identity theft is something that happens to other people. However, your chance of becoming a victim of ID theft is growing. There was a 13% increase in identity fraud in the United States in 2011, with more than 11.6 million adults becoming ID theft victims. Identity theft is more than a nuisance. It can have serious consequences on everything from your finances to your life.

Knowledge is power! Come learn how you can protect yourself from becoming a victim as Country Club Bank presents an Identity Theft/Financial Abuse & Exploitation Seminar. You’ll hear from Rita Kowalewski, Vice President/Compliance for Country Club Bank, and Evie Curtis, Senior Vice President Country Club Trust, as they explain ways to protect yourself from identity theft and financial exploitation. You’ll learn common ways identity theft happens, types of fraud, ways to protect your personal information and what to do if you are a victim of identity theft.

Don’t miss this important seminar at 3:00 on Wednesday, January 21, in the Westport Room.

BEGINNING THIS MONTH: CARD & GAME AFTERNOON EVERY WEDNESDAY

Bring on the friendly competition every Wednesday with an afternoon of cards and games! Come to the Activity Center where you’ll have the chance to play a host of games — there will be decks of cards, backgammon boards, chess and checkers boards and a variety of board games — all set up and waiting for some players!

Encourage your friends and neighbors to join you — this is definitely a case of the more the merrier! Don’t miss out on the fun at 1:00 every Wednesday in the Activity Center. Please note: this will replace the weekly open bridge games.

A special thank you to all residents, family members, board members and others who donated to our Employee Holiday Fund —

with much gratitude and appreciation for your support throughout the year.
