Here we are in May alreadyTime really does seem to flyby. And what beautiful

weather. Beautiful for us that is, butnot for dogs left in cars. Even whenit is not that warm it can getunbearably hot in a car on a sunnyday. In fact, when it’s 22°C outside, the temperature inside a car cansoar to 47°C within 60 minutes. Soplease don’t be tempted, even withthe windows open and a sunshadeon, the car will still not be coolenough. So now you have the dogwith you, also don’t be tempted tolet it off the lead on the Paseo. Notso long ago someone was fined fortheir dog sitting outside the bar offthe lead whilst they were inside! There were two options … pay thefine or the dog goes to the pound!!Also remember dogs are not allowedon the beach until the end of thesummer now.April proved to be quite a busymonth for Photographer Ian as youwill see as you work your waythrough this month’s issue. Mygrateful thanks to him for succeed-ing in being in several places at once! However, only a small selection ofthe photos taken are containedwithin, if you go to Ian’s facebook

MARGARINE OR BUTTER? It’s one ofthose unanswerable questions, likebig end or little end when it comes totaking the top off your boiled egg. Themore exotic and widely travelledamongst us might argue the merits ofVegemite over Marmite. Fathers willbanish their sons over a discussion onwhether to vote Labour or Conserva-tive and stadiums and cities havebeen levelled on the strength of ‘TheReds’ being (or possibly NOT being)better than ‘The Blues’.Whatever dichotomous thing weargue over the day always starts witha nice cup of tea and a slice of toast. But do I use Butter or Margarine? Formany years I have wondered and likea good boy I tended to stick withmargarine. There were people on TVtelling women of a certain age that ifthey loved the men in their life theywould buy margarine for them. But! Ialways preferred the taste of butter.Butter became a guilty pleasure, tome, to be enjoyed on birthdays andspecial occasions. For day to day living

It had to be Margarine. Then one dayrecently I got an email from my friendRuby with the following accusationslevelled at margarine ....“Margarine was originally manufac-tured to fatten turkeys. When it killedthe turkeys, the people who had putall the money into the researchwanted a payback so they put theirheads together to figure out what todo with this product to get theirmoney back.It was a white substance with no foodappeal so they added the yellowcolouring and sold it to people to usein place of butter.DO YOU KNOW the differencebetween margarine and butter? Both have the same amount ofcalories!Butter is slightly higher in saturatedfats at 8 grams; compared to5 gramsfor margarine!Eating margarine can increase heartdisease in women by 53% over eatingthe same amount of butter, accordingto a recent Harvard Medical Study!Eating butter increases the absorp-tion of many other nutrients in otherfoods.Butter has many nutritional benefitswhere margarine has a few and onlybecause they are added!Butter has been around for centurieswhere as margarine has been aroundfor less than 100 years.Margarine IS .... Very High in Trans

fatty acids. Triples risk of coronaryheart disease. Increases totalcholesterol and LDL (this is the badcholesterol) and lowers HDLcholesterol, (the good cholesterol).Increases the risk of cancers up to fivetimes. Lowers quality of breast milk.Decreases immune response.Decreases insulin response. And here is the most disturbing factof all ....Margarine is but ONE MOLECULEaway from being PLASTIC and shares27 ingredients with PAINT.Open a tub of margarine and leave itopen in your garage or shaded area.Within a few days you will notice acouple of things:1. No flies, not even those pesky fruitflies will go near it (that should tellyou something).2. It does not rot or smell differentlybecause it has no value; nothing willgrow on it. Even those teeny weenymicro-organisms will not a find ahome to grow. Why? Because it isnearly plastic. Now! This information came as a bitof a shock to me. I was brought up onmargarine on the basis that we weremade to believe it healthier thanbutter. If all or any of this informationis true my poor mum has been killingus slowly with plastic paint-spread. Ihit the internet, hard. I was deter-mined to find the truth and I havedone so.I found a fantastic little site. I say“little” because the site serves onlyone purpose. They Sift. They siftthings from top to bottom and findthe truth in internet rumours andwith equal tenacity they find the liesin them too. The site iswww.truthorfiction.com.They seem to have no answers about

which end to crack my egg or whether‘The Blues’ are actually better than‘The Reds’ and to all intents andpurposes it seems they never heardof Marmite but they do have a lot ofanswers for what are often verydisturbing questions indeed.Like; Is it true a woman ate cockroachegg infested meat in a Mexican-foodrestaurant and the eggs hatched in-side her? This internet rumour endsin the roaches bursting forth from hermouth in a swarm. There are many “urban legends” dealtwith by the guys atwww.truthorfiction.com and havingdone a bit of sifting of my own ontheir site I must say they have done avery eloquent job, both verifying andrefuting claims of “truth” across theworld and all over the web.If you hear a story, on any subject, andyou doubt its veracity and youranswer is not to be found onwww.truthorfiction.com you cansubmit a question and the nicefellows will go a-sifting on your behalf. So as Mulder often told us back in the90s…The truth IS out there.I should add I’m not going to tell youthe whole truth about Margarine andButter. You can go and look foryourself, here is the direct link:http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/b/butter-margarine.htmI will tell you that I threw whatmargarine I had left in my fridge intothe bin. Thanks to Ruby for raising my doubtsand razing their lies.If you find anything out there that ourreaders might find useful please letme know about it. You can email meat [email protected]

An informative andfascinating trip is thedescription used for therecent Almanzora Groupof Friends MovieLocation Tour. FromTabernas, the scene ofso many SpaghettiWesterns ... Patton,Lawrence of Arabia,Indiana Jones and manymore, they travelledonto Bar Ambrosio, onthe outskirts of Almeria. This was a shrine to

cinema and full of movie memorabilia, the owner giving a demo of hisantique, 1910 film projector.Next stop was the newly opened, state of the art, “Casa del Cine” housed inthe restored Casa de la Torre, home for a while to John Lennon, where someclever holographic displays were shown relating the history of the house andits connection to cinema. Each room in this museum brings a differentsurprise culminating in a tribute to John Lennon – a treat for any Beatles fan. After a themed lunch in the village of Los Albaricoques – another moviejewel, they strolled through the village to see scenes of gunfights andshootouts. The day then continued on to the famous Cortijo Del Frailes, through Cabode Gata to several more movie locations at Rodalquilar, Agua Armarga andCarboneras. The Wind and the Lion, How I Won the War, Sexy Beast,Treasure Island and Emmanuelle were just a small sample of other films shotin this beautiful coastal area. The happy band of film buffs arrived home by8pm and as their esteemed leader said “That was a wrap”!Next trips are: May 25th, Mystery Tour with lunch in the mountains; June20th, Flamenco evening with dinner & wine; Sept 10th to 14th, In theFootsteps of Don Quixote - A five day tour of Castilla-La Mancha.

 A recent study discovered that

“hidden charges” can triple the cost

of renting a car in Spain. The

traditional model for car hire is that

the vehicle is expected to be

returned with same amount of fuel

as when it was picked up: usually

“out full, back full”, occasionally

“out empty, back empty”. But with

competition between rental

companies intensifying, many

firms in Spain have moved to an

“out full, back empty” rule – with

customers paying inflated rates for

petrol or diesel that they may not be

able to use, leaving the customer

out of pocket. Which? Travel also

discovered that some rental

companies are charging up to three

times forecourt prices for the petrol

in their cars! So shop around and

ask questions before renting.

 Still, good news from Almería

airport which has confirmed it is

flying to 26 destinations this

summer, bringing in tourists from

all over Europe to our wonderful

little corner of Spain.

 Talking of tourism, Camping

Los Gallardos has been

overhauling the onsite shower and

toilet block, and it is looking

fabulous! As part of the overhaul,

they have installed a new hi-tech

German solar water heating system

which amongst other things is

expected to save over 254 tons of

Co2 emissions over the next

decade.

Have you got that problem of

having a large vehicle, trailer,

caravan or similar and nowhere to

put it? Well, why not deposit it in

the secure lockup at Camping Los

Gallardos. For just 350€ a year

your vehicle is fully insured and

looked after, freeing up your

driveway in exchange for peace of

mind knowing it is being well

looked after.

 And while you’re there, check

out the campsite shop’s wide range

of UK imported goods at low, low

prices. From Marmite to Bovril,

they’ve got it in stock at

surprisingly low prices - and if

you’re a member of their “camping

clubcard” loyalty scheme, you save

even more! The scheme allows you

to accumulate points every time

you spend, and you can then

redeem those points for free gifts or

discounts. Check out

www.losgallardosleisure.es for

more information on the scheme.

 A wonderful new ramblers route

from Las Menas to Macenas, all the

way along Mojácar playa (via the

hills) has now been officially

opened, and is well worth an

afternoon! Called the El sendero de

Las Menas a Macenas, pop into the

tourist office on the beach for the

exact route, and don’t forget to take

some water with you.

 The Easter bonnet parade on

Easter Sunday up at Miraflores was

amazingly good fun with lots and

lots of lovely ladies (and even a

few of the lads!) turning up to show

off their creations. Check out the

campsite facebook page for the

photos and the gossip.

Did you see the young students

dressed up in their 18th century

finery parading and singing

through Mojácar? It was the third

annual international tuna festival

(tunas being university wassailing

groups) and groups from all over

the world descended on Mojácar

for the weekend, and competed

against one another to see who had

the finest harmonies. ‘Twas a sight

to behold!

Don’t forget that the next big

fiestas around here will be the San

Isidrio weekend of the 18th, check

with your local townhall to see

what is going on. Mojácar and Los

Gallardos both should have

something interesting going on in

their main squares.

And of course, next month is

Moros y Cristianos in Mojácar,

15th of June, with the usual

wonderful theatre of the arrival on

the beach, followed by the

procession up to the village. If

they finish the car park in time,

they may even have their usual

fiesta afterwards in the village!

There is also a concert by the

famous jazz - flamenco fusion

artist “Jorge Pardo” on the 18th in

Mojácar. Tickets are 7€ from

many places in Mojácar (including

the tourism office) or 10€ on the

door. If you appreciate jazz or

flamenco, this promises to be a

worthy evening.

 And the central government

wants to put a stop to “health

tourism” in Spain by making it

more difficult to get health cards

unless you have a “valid reason”

for living in Spain. How this

affects EU citizens is not yet clear,

but if you don’t have one, get it!

FERRO - Can you give this handsome and lovelydog a good home? Ferro is a friendly and activedog that loves to play and be involved in all kindsof activities. He gets on well with other dogs, though he does not seem to be aware of his ownsize and sometimes plays a little rough with theothers. But he means no harm. Because he spendsmost of his time with other dogs he is a little lesssure about us humans, so may step back at firstapproach from strangers but then relaxes andmakes contact. A really nice and energeticteenager dog.

GRACIE - D.O.B : 21/5/2011Gracie and her 2 siblings have been brought up from kitsby one of our fosterers and all are now ready to findforever homes of their own. Gracie is more timid than herbrothers, but once she is familiar with you, her cheekyloveable character is revealed and she will encourageyou to stroke and play with her. All are used to dogs anddo, in fact, join them on their walks! Spayed andvaccinated. If you would like any further information onGracie or her siblings, please contact Diane on 950 617643 or Ruth on 637 817 982.

DOG OF THE MONTHJELLYBEAN is now an adolescent anddisplays some typical teen behaviour. Hehas now become more dominant in naturewith the other dogs in his kennel and playgroup. He is very active, easily gets bored, and is under-stimulated in the shelterenvironment. He wants to be in the forefrontof the group and will push to get to the frontwhen someone arrives. Jellybean has ahigh energy level that is not being methere. He really enjoys going for walks and playing, so would need a home that canaddress this need. We do not think that he has ever lived in a home (or may be didwhen he was young), so will most likely need to learn everything involved. Jellybeancan jump extremely high and repetitively when he gets over-excited so if outsidehe would need a very high enclosure, preferably with a roofing structure. He stillremains a very friendly and sociable dog with people and will be one of the firstto run over and greet and play with you. His lack of training and his energy needswill need to be met. With direction, he should be a nice pet.

Gemma - was found abandoned in Bedar. Shewas starving and trying desperately to get towhere she could smell food being cooked. Sheis affectionate though a little timid at first, butimproves with confidence each day. Gets onwell with other dogs in her foster home. Shelearned to walk on the lead within days, butneeds more experience outside the home. Nofood aggression noted though she eats rapidlyand will go to the other dogs’ bowls. Shouldnot be homed with cats.

SPENCER - Of all the dogs in the shelter, Spencer isone of the most people friendly. He adores humancompany. However, this friendliness does not alwaysextend to other dogs so he is best homed as an onlydog. Though he is an older dog, Spencer loves to play, especially with toys, and of course would love you toplay with him too.

I have a suspicion that we are alljumping on the Jubilee bandwagon - it is, afterall, the Queen’s Jubilee, not ours, and I feel sheis entitled to enjoy herself as she sees fit.Perhaps she would rather have a duvet day,and stay in bed until 10 o’clock? Then she couldget up and dressed in her comfy slacks andsloppy old fleece, tie on the faithful headscarfand head for the stables, where she wouldsaddle and bridle her favourite horse anddepart for a canter around the countryside, coming back with a goodly appetite for a baconsarnie, eaten at the kitchen table.Perhaps she could then put on a decent top,let her ladies fix her hair, and shuffle out ontothe balcony in her slippers (nobody sees herfrom the waist down) to give her public agracious wave after which she would head tothe back garden to play with the dogs for a bitbefore sitting down to a cream tea, which shewould share with Philip and the dogs. Ormaybe the dogs and Philip. She’d probably be a bit tired by now, so shecould send out for a takeaway and a video, settle herself comfortably on the sofa with arug over her knees and sip a glass of wine ortwo before going to bed.I think she’d like a day like that far better thanhaving to traipse all around the country lookingtidy and queenly and being nice to people. Itseems unfair to me that it is her Jubilee, yetshe gets no say in what she does or where shegoes – I think for just one day she should beallowed to let herself go and have a day offfrom the rest of us, just like the rest of us.Also, then there would be no Jubilee partiesto organise, so the Higher Authority wouldretain her calm, none of the neighbours wouldget drunk and behave in an embarrassing way,no garden furniture would get broken, and Iwouldn’t have to shuttle endlessly to the shopsfor booze, bunting and barbecue lighters!Ah well! One can but dream.

Not a lot to report really, ‘Orca Steve’from his boat in Garrucha hasn’t beencatching much and other than onedecent 3lbs palometon (leer fish)‘London Bill’ caught from Macenasrocks that was about it sea fishing-wise. Except for a tale from ‘CaptainBrian Cuba’ as per below.Brian said, “We haven't been outmuch these last couple of weeks, toobumpy for me but Duncan and I didhave a go on Tuesday morning. It wasn't the best of starts, and waspretty breezy before we even cast offbut, about 10 o'clock, we had a go.We had a very choppy ride down thecoast to about 3/4 mile out, due East,of the Repsol garage where we metup with ‘Captain Orca Steve’. He hadabout 6 on board his boat and saidhe was really struggling to get intoanything at all, just no fish! We werein about 80 ft of water and driftingSouth at about 1.2mph according tothe GPS.Steve moved off, out into deeperwater, but Duncan and I decided if weweren't going to catch anything wemight as well NOT catch it in only 80ftof water as opposed to 400ft, a loteasier on the old arms bringing emptyhooks up from that depth. We dropped our baited feathers overand just drifted with the prevailingNortherly wind in the generaldirection of Mojácar, I suspect wemight have made GIB.by tea time, thewind was so strong.Anyway, before we had gone quitethat far, I noticed one of the buoys

marking the end of a local inshorefishermen's long net fast bearing downon us. We drifted right over the markerand at the last minute I grabbed thebuoy and attached a 10mt line to it.Here we had a made to measure seaanchor and we didn't have the lousyjob of pulling it back up when weeventually decided to leave. It justcouldn't have been better. Once wehad established our rightful spot onthe ocean, 10mts beyond the net, Idropped a 1lb block of minced liverover board and watched it settle downright below the boat. Now I don't know if it was the fact wewere eventually anchored or the factthat we had dropped a goodly load ofjuicy ground bait down, I suspect both, but we started catching fish almoststraight away.As soon as our lines hit the bottom wewere getting bites which more oftenthan not resulted in a fish. Not thebiggest in the sea I must confess, but alot of them, and nearly all pandoras. Icaught a small weaver fish twice in asmany minutes, it was definitely thesame one and I could swear it was thesame one Duncan caught about 5minutes later. Each time it came up weput it back down again but it kept ourbait. By the third time it was a prettywell fed little weaver and a very luckyone to boot, had we been Spanishfishermen I doubt it's fate would havebeen quite so 'healthy'.Both of us hit onto something heavyand stubborn but as we began to reelit in, on both occasions, after about 30ft it dropped off, my feeling is it was anoctopus drawn by the minced liverwhich had taken the lead weights.Could be wrong, am open to sugges-tions.Being anchored stern on to the waveswasn't the best way to spend a coupleof hours, we took on water and it gota bit bumpy, rough is the word thatsprings to mind.I did ROUGH a few years ago on theother side of the World and it doesn'treally do much for me these days, Ihave become a 'fair weather'

fisherman so imagine my surprise anddelight when, after about 2 hours, wesuddenly discovered we were nolonger able to 'feed' the fish, we wereout of bait. That was all the excuse we needed, sowe cast off from our 'user friendly'anchor and beat a hasty retreat to thecomfort of the dock.We had landed about 15 fish whichwere quickly dropped back into the seaand what with the other 5 or 6 thatnever came into the boat, and thestubborn weaver which, even if it wasthe same fish, still counted for 3 as thatwas how many times it came aboardand we fed it, all in all we had a prettygood 2 hours. Time for coffee, twocups I think!!So that was Tuesday, Thursday is goingto be a maintenance day, they happenall the time with boats, but by Fridaywe will be ready to confront the mightyocean once again and pit our witsagainst the mighty fish that dwelltherein. Needless to say, they seemmuch brighter than we are so, onceagain, we will come back with thesmallest, and I suspect, least intelligentof the species”.
