The young girl from up the street thought better of walking home by herself at midnight and let us call her mother to come and pick her up. The Police were really pleased when we rang them to let them know about the 2 teenagers putting graffiti on the fence at number 16. I wouldn’t want to be one of those boys when the Police deliver them home. Their parents probably didn’t even know they were out. Having a sleep over apparently at each other’s place ( do you know where your kids are??) The security light in the industrial area over to the left came on at 12.10am. Got the spotlight out to have a look. Probably a cat but we stayed there for a few minutes to make sure the light didn’t come back on again. Went back at 12.50am, all was quiet so that’s good. One less phone call we needed to make. Noise control called to a party at number 45. We observed from a distance just in case the well known offenders decided to get in cars and drive drunk. Phoned the Police to advise the key holder – a few too many young people out tonight, just hanging around. Safer if the building gets secured. What’s that – 2 suspicious people hanging around the main street. Wonder what they are up to. Might just park up here and observe for a while. Why has the security light come on at the back of those shops, might just go for a drive and have a look. Did you see that?? I don’t think they’ll be back again. I recognised one of those guys – will let the police know in our report. Over there – what on earth was that??? The girl has no clothes on and neither does those two guys. Hey you – is everything ok??? Yep, sober as, on a dare. Not clever to run naked thru the main street at 2.30am on a winter’s morning. Good for a laugh for us to end the night on though. MP FOR COROMANDEL

Scott [email protected]

Scott Simpson, MP CoromandelHousing is a topic that frequently arises when I speak to constituents in Te Aroha and right around the electorate. It’s also one of the most challenging issues to deal with as there are so many different forces that combine to affect the supply and consequently the cost of housing. Yet I think we all agree that a decent roof over our heads should be the right of everyone in New Zealand.I was very pleased that the Government will adopt almost all of the Productivity Commission’s recommendations to improve housing affordability in this country. There are many obstacles in the way of affordable housing. These include land supply restrictions, problems with achieving scale in new house construction, and inefficiencies, costs, and delays in the regulatory process. This means many young, hard-working people are prevented from being able to buy their own home and, in some areas, even rent is an enormous drain on their resources. Four key aims have been identified and one that I believe will have most impact in Te Aroha and the wider Coromandel electorate is a significant overhaul of the much maligned Resource Management Act. A six-month statutory time limit will be introduced for local authorities to reach consent decisions on medium size developments. This will reduce costs, uncertainty and delays, and approved projects will get underway faster. The Government will also provide greater direction to our local councils to increase land available for residential purposes and create more opportunities for development. We are also looking at ways to improve the timely provision of infrastructure to support new housing - this will include considering new ways to co-ordinate and manage infrastructure for subdivisions. There will be consultation with the construction industry to identify how to boost the supply of housing.

Once in place, these measures will have an immediate impact in assisting the building and trades industry locally. Over time, increasing the supply of housing to meet the demand should make home ownership a more realistic goal for those on lower incomes who right now are priced out of the market. As for our current home owners, record low interest rate mean a family with a $200,000 mortgage now pays around $200 less in interest each week than they did four years ago so that is very positive.Although the Productivity Commission’s recommendations will take some time to have a tangible effect, other work is on-going to improve quality and supply of social and affordable housing. The Government has carried out more than 60,000 upgrades to state houses, 185,000 private homes have been insulated through the Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart Scheme, and $104 million has been allocated to support local social housing providers to develop new affordable and social housing projects over the next three years.

Community Patrols of New Zealand are pleased to announce that their new Waikato District Representative is a Te Aroha resident, Teena Cornes. Teena, together with husband Richard Cornes have been involved with the Te Aroha Community Patrol since it was set up in 2008. Both Teena and Richard are still very involved in the local group but Teena has recently stood down as Chairperson to take on a National role with the organisation. There are now 16 Community Patrols in the Waikato with over 400 volunteers. Teena says “I am passionate about keeping our community safe”. While we will not always be in the right place at the right time – we certainly try. Statistics show that we are making a difference.”“Community groups like ours survive on the good will of volunteers and we have been very fortunate that many of our volunteers have been with the group since it was established.”

Ride safe in the WaikatoDid you know?• Motorcycles have the highest level of

risk per kilometre travelled• You are 18 times more vulnerable riding

a motorcycle than driving a car• Motorcyclists are less visible, have less

protection and less stability than most other road vehicles

• Most Waikato rural motorcycle (over 70 km/h) road crashes occur during daylight in weekends

• Urban Waikato motorcycle road crashes occur at peak times on weekdays

• If your motorcycle was manufactured on or after 1 January 1980 you must legally switch on your headlight during daylight hours

• Motorcycles account for 16% of all Waikato fatalities but only 2% of the total Waikato vehicle fleet

A return to spring riding means motorcycles are coming out of garages and back on the road. The Regional Education Group has a reminder for all riders to take care of themselves and their bikes and to ride safely on Waikato roads by following these 6 top tips:• Be seen• Start slow & warm up – get used to your

Spring is a great time to go walking! People come from far and wide to explore our walking tracks and we can count ourselves very fortunate to have these walking and tramping tracks right on our doorstep. There are tracks for all ages and fitness levels. Here are some of our favourites:Wetlands walk: This ever popular walk through a wildlife refuge is great in any season, apart from maybe winter, when often enough it’s flooded! It’s an easy 45 min loop walk with a board walk section out to a bird watching hide. It’s great fun observing the swan and duck families going about their business.Tui Domain Track: A great track if you don’t like the steepness of the mountain track, but still want to experience a bush track. It’s steep in places but generally undulating with options of connecting up to Hamilton Street or Tui Road at the end. 15 min. into the track, there is a detour to three waterfalls behind the water treatment plant.Bald Spur: Another staple for the locals and becoming increasingly popular with trail runners. This walk starts at the Mokena Geyser and makes its way about a third of the way up the mountain. It’s steep and rugged in places but a great lookout and rest spot awaits you at Whakapipi. It’s another 10 minutes from there to the actual spur and some more seating. Please be aware that dogs are not allowed beyond Bald Spur. For a more adventurous hike up Bald Spur try the Horseman’s track.Mt. Te Aroha: The jewel in the crown and a must do for all intrepid walkers. At 952m it’s the highest point in the Kaimai Ranges and offers great views from the Coromandel Peninsula down to the volcanic plateau on a fine day. Good walking shoes are essential and a stick helps with the big steps on the way down. If you are organised, you will have booked a spot at the hot pools for a relaxing soak afterwards!Waiorongomai Valley: A hidden gem 4km south of town, the Waiorongomai Valley offers walks from an hour to a whole day. While walking through the bush and past lovely streams on the old mining trails, you can admire old mining equipment, explore tunnels and walk on the historic tramway. The Piako County Tramway was built in 1882 and is New Zealand’s oldest known railway with the original rail still in place. If you fancy a multi-day hike, then you don’t have to go far either: With the Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park in your backyard, you’ve got all you need for a weekend adventure in the bush: Interesting tracks, clear streams, DOC huts and campsites and the chance to see native birds such as tui, bellbird, fantail and if you’re lucky kaka, kokako or even a kiwi.So put your boots on and get walking! Before you head out into the wild though, come and see us a the i-SITE for a free map of the local walking tracks and check out our great selection of DOC brochures for the surrounding areas.Keep smiling till next month – the i-SITE team

We are busy getting the Christmas In The Street organised. Suzy Monds and her team are making sure that this years Christmas draw is the best yet. To any business that hasn’t yet signed up for the promotion please do so. This is an important event for our town and the more support the better. Please note that the Christmas promo is not exclusively for the business association members so any one can support it - so get on board. The Christmas lights ball was a fantastic evening. Well done to the committee for organising a great evening and we look forward to next years event. The next association meeting is the 20th Nov 5:30 at the Palace Hotel, we have a guest speaker from Regional business partner Waikato, through a government fund they have the ability to assist financially in sending business owners and staff on courses for a wide range of business improvement programs. This is well worth attending to see what benefit your business may receive. They will pay half of course fees provided that you meet the criteria. I for one am looking to take them up on their offer so expect that it may also be worth while for a few other business’s as well. This years membership drive has been very successful with many new members signing up. For those that have not yet signed up its not to late to come on board so please join us it is exciting times for the town and now is the time to make a difference.Shaun O’Neill, Chairman

Te Aroha Beginnings . . .

Lamp-lighters, Town Criers and VeteransIn the days when there were no such things as radio or even telephones, it is not surprising to learn that early Te Aroha had its own Town Crier. There had been several appointments, but the one who has come down to us was Mr Gerrish, whose voice, it was claimed, could be heard all over the infant town, and half-way up the Bald Spur.He has been celebrated for his knack of evening a personal score of two under the guise of announcinglegitimate news, but generally he enjoyed a wide-spread popularity. For many years, too, before the setting up of the town's own electricity plant, the town had its own lamp-lighter in Mr Gerry White. It was quite a tie, for there were kerosene lamps on all the posts in the main street and adjoining grid . In the morning it was a case of extinguishing them.Another important personage was the pound-keeper, Mr William White. In those days, when many households kept their own cow, this could be quite exacting. Little wonder it is recorded he was not popular.A popular character of earliest Te Aroha was old Matt Maxwell, a veteran of the Crimean War. He was always good for a yarn , and was particularly popular with children. On his death his coffin was mounted on the town's fire-reel, and towed by his friends to the cemetery. Behind, there marched a mass of school children who knew and loved him.

TheatresAs World War I was ending, Te Aroha saw its firs 'movies'. This was due to the enterprise of Mr T. H.Billing, who hired the old Theatre Royal opposite the Domain, and who had provided an orchestra from his own family for the old 'silent' days. The Theatre Royal had served the town well from the earliest times. It was spacious and carried a gallery, and had been used for every kind of concert, social, exhibition, and reception the town had promoted for just on half a century. When the Majestic Theatre was constructed at the northern end of Whitaker Street, Te Aroha looked on proudly. The theatre's builder was Mr R. Woodroofe, who built on a site previously occupied

by Gordon and Sweeney's Livery Stables (the firm which for many years had provided the transport service for passenger to and from the railway station). For a brief period the 'silents' were screened in thePalace Theatre which was built in the earliest daysopposite the present war memorials.Even then an unexpected gale damaged the new theatre and held up its opening, but when it finally managed to open in 1925, the occasion was marked by a stage extravaganza by the celebrated 'Humphrey Bishop Show', which was then famous throughout Australasia. The theatre drew praise from all patrons. It could be adapted to both stage and movie shows, and did much to lift the status of the town. Conferences and receptions were also held there. In 1929, when the first 'talkies' arrived, the sound equipment was supplied by the Western Electric Company of America, and the local orchestra supplied faithfully by the Billings bowed out.One tale of the opening night must be told. The failure of the power service caused widespread consternation, but torches and candles assisted patrons to their seats, and two outside batteries from

powered lorries owned by the N.Z. Dairy Company at Waitoa were utilised, and leads came through to the operating box from the parked lorries outside. The stage was immediately flooded with light, to the applause of the audience, and the arc-lights in the projectors worked perfectly. The applause nearly lifted the roof. By the interval time, normal power had been restored. The Billing family will always be remembered for their service in the entertainment world over a long and vital period . Another person closely associated with the Billings was Mr Ron Caldwell, projectionist and movie photographer, who first made a series of films for the Hauraki Flax Company, which were used to interest prospective shareholders. His films were used for many years in promoting the industry and occupied an evening's programme. The tragedy of the Majestic Theatre was reserved for the mid-70s when, in the course of the worst gale and rain storm on record, the rear of Te Aroha's fine old theatre (then renamed the Regent) was ripped away, laying bare the whole westerly end.

"Tilly of Te Aroha"The above was the title of one of the first films made by the late Mr Rudall Hayward shortly after World War I, when the whole film industry was in its infancy. Coming from a family of show-people and theatre owners, he was quick to grasp the idea of turning out home pictures of a brief scenic, or light-heated nature. 'Tilly of Te Aroha' was one of the first of a series of twenty-four, each of which was based upon some town or centre in New Zealand. That 'Tilly' helped to focus attention on Te Aroha there can be no shadow of doubt, for the spa was then famous and thousands came for treatment. The late Mr Hayward's historical films such as the famous 'Te Kooti Trail' and a dozen others are now cherished in our archives, and later generations will recognise the debt the country owes him.Incidentally, it was Mr Ron Caldwell of Te Aroha who acted as Rudall Hayward's first assistant and cameraman in the making of the film, and he later travelled around New Zealand with him with the first sound motion pictures to be screened showing local scenes. Later again Ron was appointed chiefprojectionist at the Centennial Exhibition held atRongatai, Wellington.Another noteworthy film of his was that of the arrival of the First Pan-American Clipper at Auckland on behalf of International Films.

Paranormal detectives visit Te Aroha's haunted hotspotsAuckland Paranormal investigators, Haunted Auckland recently visited Te Aroha to look into a few of the reported haunted buildings to see if there was any truth to the ghost stories or just fragments of urban myth. Team founder and leader Mark Wallbank says the group have travelled quite extensively in the past year, delving into some of New Zealand's most notorious spirit hotspots. Haunted Auckland are a 10 person strong unit with members of varying ilks and skills which Mark says has taken quite a while to piece together. It's really quite hard finding the right people for the job. There are those that are influenced purely by the Paranormal TV shows and apply expecting non stop thrills and frights. It's actually not like that at all. In reality, being a Paranormal investigator means many long , late hours of sitting around waiting, listening and watching. Sometimes in the dark and cold. Then there's the many hours spent researching histories and analysing hundreds of photographs and countless hours of audio recordings and video footage. The team spent the night in the Mokena Hotel, with some interesting results. Also visited was the Palace Hotel and the Grand Tavern. "The Palace Hotel was very interesting indeed and Mokena, wow! We are definitely interested in returning and doing further, more thorough investigation into these places" A full report covering all findings will be published on their website after the painstaking and lengthy detective work is complete. While being a Paranormal Investigator might not be everyone's idea of a dream hobby, for Mark and his team, it's more than a hobby and they love doing it. "I've been doing this all my life and I just can't see myself walking away from it. It may sound corny, but it's who I am and I love it!" Haunted auckland has promised to venture back to Te Aroha in the new year to uncover more historical places of interest. If you feel your house may have a restless spirit residing there, the team are keen to hear from you. They can be contacted via their website www.hauntedauckland.com
