Derech Eretz – the Way of the Land “When I was young, I admired clever people. Now that I am old, I admire kind people.” — Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel

Growing up, I recall often being inspired by the words of great leaders who represented the

very best of Derech Eretz, literally, “the way of the land,” but more properly understood as the Jewish conception of good manners, proper behavior, ethical and respectful leadership, dignity and

great kindness. Among those who stand out most in my memory are great leaders like John F. Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and many more. I came of age believing in powerful exhortations such as “Ask not what your country can do for you…(JFK),” “I have a dream…(MLK),” “Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events…(RFK),” and “The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things (Reagan).”

My Jewish education reinforced the idea that great kindness is among the greatest virtues. My favorite biblical prophet, Micah, whose words found their way into the Haftarah I chanted when I became a Bar Mitzvah, reminds us that all God wants of each of us is to “do justice, love kindness, and walk with humility before God.” These were the words with which I was raised, and they are the words I strive to keep before me as I live my own life. To live a good life was to emulate the lives of our role models.

These days, that goal is harder than ever. From the highest office in our nation, and throughout the halls of government, a loud voice resounds espousing other values. Power, bullying, anger, hostility, insults, threats, arrogance, and more surround us every day. Instead of words of inspiration we hear and read daily words that belittle, offend, frighten and demean.

Who will inspire today’s children and young adults? Who will lead them to lives of kindness, gentle compassion and service to others? Who will be the voices they will hear years from now when they search for inspiration in their own struggles in life?

How bad must it get before we demand a greater aspiration for our leaders? Setting aside our personal preference for the party or policies we support in any given office, we must collectively demand a more basic standard of decency and a more civil national discourse. We must, lest our leaders truly represent our worst selves and teach such values to future generations.

Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks writes that “Small acts of kindness can change and humanise our world,” and that “We achieve greatness by handing our values onto the next generation and empowering them to go and build the future.”

Will future generations achieve greatness? The future lies in all of our hands.

From the PresidentThe tragedy at the Tree of Life

Synagogue in Pittsburgh has captivated our attention. It’s a sad

and frightening reminder that there is hatred in the world and misguided people who would like to see harm done to us just because we are Jewish. While this is certainly nothing new for the Jewish

people, an attack in a house of worship, a sacred space, makes this act even more despicable.

At Congregation Shaare Emeth, nothing is more important than the safety and security of all those who enter our grounds and building, including our children, staff, clergy and guests. Since the attack in Pittsburgh, I have attended several security meetings with members of law enforcement including our local police and FBI. I have participated in numerous conference calls and webinars and read whatever I could get my hands on.

What I have learned is that there is no one size fits all, magic solution when it comes to security. Every congregation and Jewish institution has unique and specific issues and needs. The decisions that need to be made are serious, yet anything but black and white. Many congregations across the country are grappling with these questions, not the least of which is: How are we going to pay for this? I have also learned that Shaare Emeth is doing many of the things recommended as “best practices” regarding security. Can we do more? Can we be better prepared? Absolutely, we are and we will. But I also want to add that I feel safe at Shaare Emeth and I feel safe bringing my family to Shaare Emeth.

As alarming as the Tree of Life synagogue shooting was, we must be careful not to overreact or make knee-jerk decisions just because of that event. Shaare Emeth will undergo a professional re-assessment of all our security procedures. What I can promise you is that our board of trustees will address the security needs of Congregation Shaare Emeth with the proper sense of urgency and in a thorough and thoughtful manner.

If any good can come from the horrific and senseless murders that took place in Pittsburgh, it was demonstrated at our incredible Shabbat service, the first Friday evening following the shooting. The Stiffman Sanctuary overflowed with nearly 650 people. Most were members, wanting to be together during a very difficult time. Many, however, were new faces. People from different religions and races, some community leaders, wanting to show their support for us, their Jewish neighbors. Their presence along with the inspirational call to action from our clergy, left me with a feeling of hope and reassurance. Hope that love will prevail over hate and reassurance that the work and mission of Shaare Emeth is important to our members, to our community and to our world.

Jewish EducationWinter is on its way. We are in a period of increasing

darkness. Some people have been feeling the darkness inside themselves because of troubling current events or

difficult personal moments. I am referring to the real darkness of our days outside. As the days grow shorter and the nights grow longer, the darkness can feel overwhelming. It might keep us from enjoying time outside, driving to places we want to go, or making plans with

others. Perhaps some of us might feel like we are running out of time to do everything we hope to do.

I love the idea that this is why Chanukah comes to us in the winter. When we need it most, we are gifted with eight days of light. We are obligated to kindle the lights of the chanukiyah, our 8-branched holder of candles or oil. Before the tradition became fixed as we know it today, our ancestors needed to determine how we could best fulfill this mitzvah.

In the Talmud, the famous dueling rabbis Hillel and Shammai of the early 1st century CE, had a debate about the best way to light these eight lights. Shammai says that we should begin Chanukah with eight lights, and each night take one away. By the last night of Chanukah, we should light only one for the last night. The proof text he offers is a bit obscure, but it has to do with a parallel rationale for sacrifices offered in the Temple. Hillel offers another way. He counters that for each night, we should add one light until we reach eight on the eighth night. Hillel applied a much broader principle: that holiness should only increase and not decrease, even symbolically.

This Chanukah season, when the dark settles in, I hope that each of us can find ways to increase the light in our own lives. We can be the light that glows in our homes, our communities, and our families. We can be a little kinder, more patient, more understanding. In our Religious School, I hope that we can bring light to each other by learning in partnership, by creating opportunities to celebrate one another, and by offering words of appreciation and caring to each other. We can dedicate ourselves to helping others, to giving tzedakah generously when we can, bringing light into the lives of others who need it most.

May all of us feel the light increase, bringing joy and hope to all who see it at this season.

To Increase the Light: An Evening of Mindfulness Reflecting Upon the Lessons of ChanukahWednesday, December 5 7 - 8:30 p.m.

Chanukah is a holiday filled with mindfulness questions and themes. How do we respond to darkness? When do we feel powerful, and where are we powerless? How do we cultivate resiliency? During this celebration, we will begin to wrestle with these questions through mindful speaking and listening, meditation, and mindful movement. Dress comfortably.

While this free celebration is open to all, RSVPs are appreciated to Stacy Jespersen at [email protected].

Free Weekly Meditation SitsMondays, December 3, 10 and 17 6:30 - 7:15 p.m.

Join leaders and members of the Jewish Mindfulness Center of St. Louis community for our free weekly meditation sits. These sessions are appropriate for beginning and advanced practitioners. Each sit will begin with a short teaching focusing on the weekly Torah portion, an upcoming holiday, or a particular middah (Jewish value or ethical personality trait). Participating in community sits can inspire us in our unique meditation practices, and we know that spending time in silence in the presence of community can be deeply gratifying. All are welcome to these free community sessions. We hope that you will join us.

Let It Ripple: A Program to Nurture Our Unique Ethical Quality Traits

Every Other Wednesday Evening Beginning January 9, 20197 – 8:30 p.m.

Let It Ripple is a 10-session program that allows participants to explore and nurture their own middot (ethical personality traits) of humility, patience, trust, loving-kindness and so much more. By nurturing these qualities in ourselves, we create ripples of compassion, understanding, and respect in the communities and world around us, making a tikkun (a repair) not just within, but also in our broken world. All are welcome. Participants should be able to attend all (or a large majority) of the classes and be willing to be paired with a chevruta partner (study partner), to discuss new ideas and practices, and to be open to exploring practices in between each session.

Cost is $75 for Shaare Emeth members, $100 for guests. Scholarships are available. To register, visit us online at www.mindfulness.sestl.org/letitripple.

MONDAY, JANUARY 28, 10:30 A.M.

Discussion accompanied by coffees, teas, pastries and fruit.

A Review of Rising Out of Hatred

Rising Out of Hatred tells the story of how white-supremacist ideas migrated from the far-right fringe to the White House by tracing the incredible transformation of Derek Black, a young man who grew up in the epicenter

of white nationalism. His father founded Stormfront, the largest racist community on the Internet. Derek eventually disavowed everything he was taught to believe at tremendous personal cost. Saslow asks what Derek’s story can tell us about America’s increasingly divided nature. This is a book to help us understand the American moment and to help us better understand one another.

Camp EmethAt this time of year as we celebrate Chanukah and remember

the story of rededication, I can’t help but see this as a moment of rededication for Camp Emeth. The opportunity

to lead Camp Emeth into a new era has made me a very “happy camper”. While the emotions of the passing of the torch still bring a tear to my eye, I am looking forward to future summers filled with Judaism, fun, friendships, growth and more. Believe it or not, the

work for summer 2019 has already begun.

Part of a successful summer camp experience is having high quality staff members. It’s not too early to be thinking about your 2019 summer plans. I will be starting interviews this month. And for all interested staff, keep an eye out for the online staff application.

My heart is happy and I am in the place I am supposed to be. I look forward to 2019 and an exciting new chapter for Camp Emeth.

Tzedek Chai Labyrinth RenovatedShaare Emeth student, Derek Isele, Focuses Eagle Scout Project on Chai Labyrinth Renovation

In 2004, Shaare Emeth 7th and 8th grade students, along with adult congregants, built the first Jewish labyrinth in St. Louis. A labyrinth, not to be confused with a maze, is often found

in outdoor settings, and is a single, non-branching spiral-shaped path. The purpose of a labyrinth is to allow those that walk its path to quiet the mind and focus on spiritual questions or prayer.

What makes the Shaare Emeth Chai Labyrinth Jewish? At the very center of the labyrinth’s design is a large stone chai – the Hebrew letter meaning life. Additionally, there are 18 turns in the path which create seven circles around the center. Both 18 and 7 are important Jewish numbers, representing life and the seven days of creation, respectively. Our Chai Labyrinth allows us to continue the spiritual practice of meditation and contemplation.

Shaare Emeth is very grateful to Derek Isele, his family, friends, and Boy Scout Troop, for their time spent renovating the labyrinth. For his Eagle Scout Project, Derek led the effort to update, paint, re-rock, and enhance the Chai Labyrinth.

When asked why he chose to focus on the labyrinth, Derek explained, “I’ve always liked the Labyrinth at Shaare Emeth. However, in the past few years it had fallen into a state of disrepair. Many of the rocks were shattered, and there was a large ditch at the entrance. It felt forgotten and I wanted to change that. I decided that my Eagle Scout Project would be the restoration and improvement of the Labyrinth. I hope to see the Labyrinth continue to thrive here at Shaare Emeth.”

Thank you to Derek for his love, commitment and time spent enhancing the Labyrinth so that the congregants of Shaare Emeth may enrich our spiritual practices and lives.

In 2012 the Chai Labyrinth was dedicated in honor of Ronnie Brockman for her commitment and devotion as our Program and Family Life Director. There is also a tree planted in the labyrinth in honor of Rabbi Bennett. Thank you to Chesterfield Valley Nursery, Lowe’s, and Troop 310 for their support of Derek’s project.

Online donations are processed faster than manually entered donations, eliminate the risk of transcription error, and bump your tribute to the front of the line for mailing. Are you a member or a camp/school family without a user ID and password? Call the Shaare Emeth office for help and ask for Shandi, 314-569-0010. All donations of $10 or more will be printed in The Bulletin; please allow 10 to 13 weeks during summer months and five to nine weeks during non-summer months.
