The Columban Spirit - Tradition - Community 9 March 2018

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Staff, Students and Friends,

This week saw great celebrations of International Women’s Day on Thursday. The College was involved in 4 events – IWD Breakfast sponsored by National Committee Australia, UN Women at the Convention Centre, Westpac IWD Breakfast at Morayfield Westpac Bank, Zonta Club Breakfast at Kallangur and our own Community Committee Lunch for Year 12 Young Women and Staff. The strong messages coming forth were:

• We have much to celebrate in making progress in a range of areas eg. number of women in leadership, parliament

• It will still take a considerable time to reach true equality • Women earn considerably less than men in total and on average. • Women can hold themselves back in worrying about if they are

ready for the job, whilst men will take more risks to have a go • Listening to others is important as their stories can be so

inspirational • Working together provides strength to each other – a guest speaker

reminded us that “to go fast is to go alone, to go far is to go with others”

The Westpac breakfast was a celebration of women working together to press for progress to build business, buy a new home, and prepare for financial futures. This is a message that is so important – Mel Syrens who was one of our school panellists, spoke of her journey as a young indigenous woman, who has a degree in Aboriginal Studies, in a Liaison position at ACU, with 2 young children to raise, and how it makes such a difference to have substantial rewarding employment. Mel spoke passionately of the importance of voice, having your dream, overcoming barriers, determination, and keeping yourself in perspective. Our other guest panellists were two of our own teachers with previous careers - Kelly Woods and Kellie Powell. Kellie told us of her journey of how she reached and sustained her goal of playing sport (Touch Football) for Australia encouraging all to learn from victory and failure. Kelly particularly talked about feedback and how important that is to drive improvement. If you do not get chosen, what can you do to get selected? Kelly entertained us with her stories of how she improved her agility, speed and ball passing accuracy. So, overall Kelly emphasised the importance of practice, determination, belief in self, and perseverance through setbacks. Kellie Powell is now a teacher of science but had a substantive career as a scientist involved in research, delivering international papers, and being involved in a world dominated by male scientists. Kellie spoke of the need to educate others in attitudes about the world of science and perception of women in the role. Enrolment Interviews – Time to Ensure Applications Are In! We have conducted many interviews to date for 2019 and 2020. It is refreshing to hear that people are wanting the huge range of opportunities and options in our nationally recognised award winning pathways. Every Student Every Success is our motto and we strive to make that true for every student. At some point every student will have a “bump “ in the road – that is life! It is our job to help prepare them and provide skills for these bumps to cultivate resilience and endurance in what they are doing! Our Well Being team is exemplary in their approach and this was recognised in our College External Review. Principal Awards Criteria I would like to emphasize the importance of application to studies. This Awards Ceremony takes place in Term 2 and Term 3 acknowledging achievements in Term 1 and Term 2 reports. If a student in Year 7-9 gains 5 “A”’s in Effort and/or Achievement Grades then he/she will receive an award. In Year 10 it is required in 4 subjects, and in Year 11/12 it is 3 subjects due to less subjects/certificates. The strongest correlation in evidence in learning is the link between application and achievement. Sometimes it takes longer for some, but they will get there in the end if they work hard. The other factor is the belief in reaching excellence – that is crucial to our high performance culture and we always strive to set the bar high! Student Achievements

CaSPA Board Meeting As one of the Directors on the Catholic Secondary Schools Board for Australia, we met in Canberra on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday this week. A number of key issues were discussed with Government, Principals, and Catholic Governance representatives. The importance of student futures, funding issues, STEM programs, indigenous education, student wellbeing , teacher training and certification, Principal Leadership, NCCD and implications, were a few of the topics which were promoted and examined to date. This position provides up to date information for us and facilitates a voice at national level. In closing, the Lenten story for this week is about : Bayan from Jordan Bayan is a 12-year-old Syrian girl, living with her family in Jordan, a keen student, who has her sights set on a career as an ophthalmologist. She struggled to overcome the trauma of growing up in a conflict zone, facing the prospect of missing out on schooling. Now, Bayan is an academic high-achiever, flourishing in a stable school environment.

Bayan grew up in Syria’s capital, Damascus. The Syrian conflict turned their lives upside down and they were forced to flee. As their time in Jordan extended, Caritas Australia and our partners, Caritas Jordan and Catholic Relief Services stepped in to provide vital academic and psychosocial support. Bayan started attending one of Jordan’s Caritas Schools which operates on Saturdays, providing

tuition to disadvantaged students.

Loving God,

Sometimes my heart

turns in every direction

except towards you.

Please help me

to turn my heart toward you,

to gaze upon you in trust

and to seek your kingdom with all of my heart.

Soften my hardened heart

so that I might love others

as a way to glorify and worship you.

Grant me this

with the ever-present guidance of your spirit.

“The school brings them back to a normal life, as they start to dream again,” says Abeer, Caritas Education and Protection Co-Ordinator. Caritas provides a broad range of other education services, including preparing pre-school children for school, supporting students who

have missed out on schooling to return to the education system, as well as counselling and nutritious meals and snacks at school.

“I would not be able to read and write. I would feel lost, as if I knew nothing about the world. School has the power to lift us up, so we can reach our goals and learn quickly." – Bayan

Take care and blessings for the week.

Senior Learning and Pathways

Year 11 & 12 Senior Assessment Period Our Year 11’s and 12’s will commence their exam block period shortly. All students are required to attend their exam block sessions at the scheduled time. In the event of an absence from an exam, please contact the College office. A Medical Certificate is required if a student is absent from an exam. Students are required to attend school only when they have an exam scheduled during the exam block period. Year 12 QCS Practice Thank you for your support of our QCS Preparation Program to date. Students will be completing a set of practice exams on Monday and Tuesday of the last week of Term 1. This is an important part of our preparation program as results of these tests inform the next phase of our preparation program. If your child is OP Eligible, and has also organised Structured Workplace Learning, please contact me and we can discuss options in relation to the QCS Practice Testing. Year 12 Formal Invitations and information were given out to our Year 12 students this week, and forms can also be found on the Parent Portal. The Formal will be held on Friday 4th May at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. Family photos commence at 5.45pm with Dinner at 7pm. We are looking forward to this exciting event in our Year 12 calendar!

The wet weather held off last Friday to enable the planned Schools Clean Up Day activity to proceed. This activity tied in with the Clean Up Australia Day event that is held around Australia on the first Sunday in March. This year students from Molloy and Duhig Houses concentrated on cleaning the strip of land along the College’s western boundary out as far as the Duncan Street Drain. Students from O’Driscoll and English Houses focused on areas within the College including around buildings, fence lines and gardens. In total ten full bags of general waste was collected along with six full bags of recyclable material. One interesting item found was an old metal frame of a day lounge that had been discarded in the Duncan Street Drain easement. The College is once again very appreciative of the support provided from Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) which supplied rubbish bags and gloves, and collected all the bags of rubbish at the end of the event. Work Experience! Structured Workplace Learning Block (26.03.18-29.03.18) For students who are enrolled in a VET Certificate Course – your upcoming block for placement is fast approaching. Please ensure that your initial paperwork is collected from Mrs Uhlmann in Careers and returned at your earliest convenience, so that Insurance and Logbooks can be generated. Work Experience – Year 10 Students (26.06.18-29.06.18) Now is the time to be thinking about your Work Experience for next term. As some of the procedures are in the process of changing – we will need to ensure that all paperwork is completed, signed and returned in a timely manner prior to students commencing their placement. Over the coming weeks Mr Stevens and I will be visiting classes to make a start on WH&S and discussing Parent and Family links within the process of securing placements for your student. Often, Work Experience placements are obtained directly through Parents, Uncles, Aunts or family friends. This allows the student to feel comfortable with their placement and not overwhelmed by the experience. I welcome all students to pop into Careers to discuss placement, paperwork and the WH&S Safety Check with me. Prue Uhlmann | Career & Training Officer Structured Workplace Learning & Work Experience

This week saw the first of the Annual House Masses for 2018 and Duhig was first cab off the

rank!!

Father David Pascoe led a lovely Mass reflecting on our theme of ‘Rise of the Reds’ and also the

importance of forgiveness in our lives. The theme of forgiving others is present in our everyday

life – and is important in so many aspects of life; family life, friendships, with co-workers, and

also within our wider community and even nationally and internationally we see forgiveness

reflected in cultural, religious and political issues. It is an important lesson our children and

students must be taught, discussed and role modelled both at school and at home.

Thankyou very much to Father Pascoe for leading our Mass, to Lauren Dunn for all of her

organisation and preparation, and to our wonderful musicians who prepared and performed on the

day – Mr Elliot Thompson, Mr Shaun Manning, Jasmine Kriz, Toby Sheppard and Shaun Saji;

and finally our Eucharistic Ministers for the Mass.

Heading into Week 8 of Term, we hope that all students are managing their time well

with respect to studying for exams, completing assignments and balancing their other

commitments such as work, sport, cultural past times and relaxation time. If there are

any issues your student is encountering – please communicate sooner rather than later

with your child’s teacher/s, PC teacher, House Leader, Assistant Principals or

Counsellors.

We wish all of our students – not good luck, but good preparation for the assessment

period ahead and remember our theme for 2018 – RISE OF THE REDS!!!!!

Basketball Year 7 Since not playing last week and having their game cancelled due to wet weather, the Year 7a’s were keen to get on the court and continue to play some basketball. Facing off against WMAC, the girls played with heart and a sense of drive to develop cohesion and succeed as a group. The girls lost a nail-bitter 19-16. A couple of missed scoring opportunities, some unfortunate turnovers at key moments stopped momentum and gave WMAC time to recover. It was a good all round game and special mention goes to Mikayla

Hudson [6 points] and Lilly Wilkie [6 points] for their contributions throughout the 40 minutes.

Value each moment, stick it out when you make mistakes, work hard as a team, trust in each other’s skills and reward your defensive efforts on the scoreboard. Learning is the name of the game and having FUN! Looking forward to more training this week and playing against Canterbury will be our next big challenge as a squad. Bring it on! Mr Cremasco-Schmidt | Coach Year 8 The Year 8 St Columban’s Blue team faced tough opposition at WMAC on Saturday. Despite the heat and an outside game the girls worked hard for 40 minutes against their strongest opposition to date. We were only a few points down heading into the second quarter but the height, speed and strong defensive game of the WMAC girls caused significant challenges for StC. Our passing and fitness let us down in the third quarter and WMAC were able to gain a significant number of easy points. The girls rallied well in the fourth quarter, the on court communication improved and rebounds were a lot stronger. Despite valiant efforts and better defence we ended up going down 15 – 45 at the final buzzer. This week we will get back to basics at training and focus on our core skills. Remember girls, the St Columban’s spirit comes from within, heads up and never give up. Mrs Trickett and Susanne Perey | Coach & Manager Year 9 Girls After previously being washed out in the grand final rematch with JPC, the girls made the trip to WMAC to face a tough opposition. Though eventually running out 29-point winners, the girls left a lot to be desired. While the girls have been extremely dominant this season, I reminded them that we have not yet played the top two teams and that it is important to keep playing no matter the opposition. Led by Point Guard and Captain Brooklyn Webb, the girls turned it around in the second half and went on to win comfortably after being up 11 points at half time. Defensively the girls switched on and were able to limit WMAC to only 4 points in the second half, and 15 for the game. We look forward to facing off against what will be our toughest test of the year at Canterbury College! Hayden Reed | Coach 2nds With only 6 players, the 2nds team faced a solid WMAC outfit. With a simple game plan, the girls struggled initially to convert opportunities, however with some good decision making and passing got back into the game. But as the game is over 4 quarters, with fatigue setting in and some turnovers occurring, the StC girls went down 34-16. However, each girl is improving every week with being more comfortable on the ball and taking time to react to the defence, it will lead to bigger and better things in the future. Thank you to Genee Jones for filling in and helping out the girls with your communication on the court and your driving to the basket. Well done on your efforts and keep working together to improve on your cohesion and individual skills. Great effort girls! Mr Cremasco-Schmidt | Coach 1sts WMAC was the next challenge ahead for the 1st girls. Playing at home, WMAC came out hard and shot the ball well across each quarter. However, the StC 1st girls continued to challenge them at certain moments, but unfortunately went down 43-18. Special mention goes to Jasmine Houlahan for an awesome game with 12 points, 5 rebounds and her ability to attack the basket and work hard inside was great to see her execute it in a game situation. Each team provides new challenges for the girls to face off against and learn how to adapt to each unique playing style. Taking each game in their stride and playing with intensity throughout the 4 quarters, the girls will be rewarded for their efforts. Looking forward to more training and Canterbury on Saturday. Tennis A great weekend of Tennis for the girls with our Year 7 and 8s coming away with their first wins of the season! All of our teams were very competitive and results were extremely close. Our girls made the journey to WMAC looking forward to another match day and tried their best in all games. We’re making progress as Zara Kidd secured our first few winning games in the competition that’s been badly rain-affected. We walked away winners partly due to the fact, that our opposition could not field not one but two players. So we recorded our first win in the competition, which hopefully will provide the girls with more confidence for the remaining matches of the season. The rainy weather allowed us once again to take the court in fair contest against WMAC. Or so we expected, however; unfortunately our opposition could not field a complete team, which took away the opportunity from our players to show their true game skills. As a consolation, we recorded some easy wins on our side of the ledger, which helped us to an overall victory on the day, though it was a hard fought one. The girls tried hard on the court and Sam Galland’s victory in her Singles drove the necessary points home. We do have a lot more to learn especially about how to strategize, because that seems to be making the difference between winning or losing games, while our girls battle hard and their skills are improving. The toughest battle to date for our Year 9 Team of Charlee McNeilly, Jasmin Him, Rhiannon Bennett and Gemma Burnett, with the girls losing 5-1; 35-18 games. As with all our teams last week there were some very close matches but the girls just couldn’t come away with the points. Congratulations to Charlee McNeilly for her Singles win and special mention to Gemma Burnett for her Singles battle going down in the Tie Break 7-5. Some amazing performances from our Year 10 girls of Emily White, Tina Chen, Kalani Duff and Abbey Hamilton. The final score was three sets All, but unfortunately the girls lost by three games! Congratulations to Emily White for winning her Singles 6-3 and an outstanding performance by Kalani Duff winning both Singles (6-1) and Doubles along with Abbey Hamilton (6-3). Special thanks to Abbey from Year 8 for filling in at the last minute – you did a fantastic job! Close matches for both the Firsts and Seconds against West Mac! The Seconds of Elle-Louise Kidd, Brianna Kidd, Ashley Ollett and Emily Spnovic lost a very close match 3-3 29-27. Wins for Brianna and Ashley in Singles and a tough match for Elle-Louise after winning the Doubles with sister Brianna. Special mention to Emily Spnovic from Year 9 for stepping in and playing well for this team. The Firsts comprising of Shanika Lal, Rebecca Him, Chyna McLatchey and Holly Baxter had a loss 4-2 30-18. Strong wins for Shanika and Chyna in their Singles and Holly and Rebecca played well for a close loss. Margie Hallinan TAS Girls Tennis Coordinator

Rugby A reminder for all boys wanting to play TAS Rugby for the College in Term 2. You are required to attend Preseason Rugby Training on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7am on the Back Oval. This training is essential in preparing well for a successful season across all year levels. Boys are encouraged to car pool. Often boys can be picked up enroute by another family driving past, it just needs a bit of initiative on the boys part to ask. It doesn’t have to be the same age group either. Parents have been emailed regarding the expectation that all boys have a mouthguard. The boys have also been told not to bring their sports uniform to train in, but some older clothing or other rugby gear, their boots, and a water bottle. Those boys who have never played before are encouraged to give it a go! Our PreSeason Rugby program has focused on improving the technical aspects of our core skills, which are the pillars of our teams. Some of these include: · Catch & Pass · Defensive position · Break down positioning · Ball carry into contact. So far this season we have seen some hard work from individuals and the following boys have been recognised as ‘ALBI Worker of the Week’ and rewarded with a StC water bottle for their consistency, leadership and effort when improving on technical skills - Week 4: Jake Harvey (Year 11) & Ryan FitzGerald (Year 8) Week 5: Mason Collett (Year 9) & Noah McLachlan (Year 7) Week 6: Jordan Marshman (Year 12) & Harry Tompsett (Year 10) Week 7: Zachary Streefkerk (Year 8) & Samuel Hoolihan (Year 7) This student is injured but has been at every training to learn & help. Great effort! Thankyou to our hard working and dedicated Coaches who have given their time early on Tuesday and Thursday mornings: Mr Brad Andersen, Mr Andrew Skinner, Mr Kent Evans, Mr Anthony Walker and Mr Shane Powell

Look forward to seeing all boys wishing to play Rugby in Term 2 at 7am Tuesday & Thursday mornings!
