Prof.MatlockreceivedhisB.S.degreeinengineeringsciencefromtheUniversityofTexasatAustin(1968),andhisM.S.(1970)andPh.D.(1972)degreesinmaterialsscienceandengineeringfromStanfordUniversity.He isaUniversityEmeritusProfessorandtheArmcoFoundationFogartyProfessor in theGeorgeS.AnsellDepartment of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM), Golden,Colorado. ABSTRACT:

Currentlynewandenhancedsteelsarerequiredtomeetabroadrangeofsocietalneedsincluding,asexamples,moreefficienttransportationsystems,improvedandexpandedenergyproductionsystems,andinfrastructuredevelopmentandredevelopmentprojects. Asa result,multiple innovations in thesteel industryhavebeenrealized tosupport theneeds for economicsolutions for thesecriticalapplications. Thispresentationwillinclude an assessment of research innovations in the global steel industry as well as specific selectedresearchexampleschosentoillustratethebroadrangeofdevelopmentsthathaveevolvedrecentlyleadingtonewproducts.Whilecorporateresearchprogramsareimportant,emphasisherewillbeplacedonindustry/universitypartnershipsandtheirimportancetothesteelindustry.InformationisdrawnfromtheresearchoftheAdvancedSteelProcessingandProductsResearchCenter, an industry/university cooperative researchcentercurrentlyinits31styearofoperationattheColoradoSchoolofMines.Specificresearchexampleswillincludesheet,plateandbarsteels.Forexample,newlydevelopedadvancedhighstrengthsheetsteels(AHSS)withexcellentformabilitythathaveevolvedparticularlyforautomotiveapplicationswillbehighlighted.Thesenewhigh-strengthsteelsenablevehicleweightreductiontoimprovefueleconomyandleadtoenhancedcrashperformanceandpassengersafety.Asasecondexample,researchonhigh-strengthpipelinesteelswillbeusedtoillustratehowtheapplicationofadvancedanalyticaltechniques(e.g.electronbackscattereddiffraction–EBSD)hasprovidedenhancedunderstandingofthefundamentalfactorswhichcontrolstrengthandtoughnessinplatesteelsusedtofabricatehighstrengthpipe.Inaddition,anassessmentoffutureresearchopportunitiesforthesteelindustrywillbepresented.

ABSTRACT:

Twobasicandcomplementaryapproacheshavebeendeveloped for thesynthesisof ultrafinegrained(UFG)materialsandtheseareknownasthe‘‘bottom-up’’andthe‘‘top-down’’approaches.Inthe‘‘bottom-up’’approach,UFGmaterialsarefabricatedbyassemblingindividualatomsorbyconsolidatingnano-particulatesolids.The‘‘top-down’’approachisdifferentbecauseitisdependentupontakingabulksolidwitharelativelycoarsegrainsizeandprocessingthesolidtoproduceaUFGmicrostructurethroughheavystrainingorshockloading.Inordertoconvertacoarse-grainedsolidintoamaterialwithultrafinegrains,itisnecessarybothtoimposeanexceptionallyhighstraininordertointroduceahighdensityofdislocationsandforthesedislocationstosubsequentlyre-arrangetoformanarrayofgrainboundaries.Thepotentialofimprovingmechanicalpropertiesbyreducingthegrainsizetothenanostructuredregimehasbeenaggressivelyaddressed,andisthefocusofthispresentation.Thework,currentlypresented,addressescryomillingandsubsequentconsolidationofaluminumalloyspowders (99.7Al,6061and2024AA)asone technique thatrepresents thebottom-upapproach.Of the top-downapproach techniques investigatedare theequalchannelangularpressing(ECAP),highpressuretorsion(HPT),frictionstirprocessing(FSP),cryogenicshockloading,accumulativerollbonding(ARB)androtaryswaging(RS).Thepreviousprocessingtechniqueswereemployedonagroupofaluminumalloys(6082,5083,1050AA)andagroupoftitaniumalloys(CPTi,Ti54MAND10-2-3Tialloy).Alloftheseproceduresarecapableofintroducinglargeplasticstrainingandsignificantmicrostructuralrefinementinbulkcrystallinesolids.Theresultsfocusondocumentingtheevolutionofmechanicalproperties,microstructureandtexture.

MarcLeparouxstudiedPhysicsandChemistryofMaterialsinRennes(France).HeobtainedhisPhDinAppliedSciences in 1995 inOrléans (France) on the chemical vapor synthesis of BoronNitride based interphasesforSiC/SiCceramiccomposites.ThePhDworkwasperformedatCNRStogetherwithan industrialpartner,theSnecmaGroup.HethenjoinedtheFraunhoferInstituteforMaterialsandLaserTechnologiesinDresden(Germany)wherehewasinchargeofthelaserassistedchemicalvapordepositionforcoatingfiberstobeusedincompositematerials.Inparallel,hedevelopedinfraredspectroscopytechniquesformonitoringgasphaseprocesses.HejoinedEmpainSwitzerlandin2001whereheinitiatedthenanoparticlethermalplasmasynthesisactivities.Hethenbuiltauniqueinductivelycoupledthermalplasmareactorallowingthein-situcharacterizationofthenanoparticlesynthesis.Thefacilityhasbeenusedforproducingalargevarietyofdifferentmaterialslikecarbides(SiC,TiC,WC,TaC,ZrC),carbonitrides(TiCN),oxides(Al2O3)andalsosomemetallicmaterials likeCu,Si,NiTi.Besidethesynthesisofnanoparticles,thereactorcanalsobeusedforspheroidizingmicroscaleparticlesorfunctionalizingpowders.Withtheseactivities,MarcLeparouxisinvolvedinalotoflargeprojectsinEuropeonbatteriesandcomposites.In2006,hestartedinparallelhisactivitiesonmetalmatrixcompositereinforcedwiththenanoparticlesheproduced.Hereportedamongthebestmechanicalstrengthsforaluminumalloysreinforcedwithnanoparticulatematerials.Inthisframework,aprojecttogetherwithKACSThasbeenlaunched.HeisleadingofficiallytheGroupNanoparticlesandNanocompositessincemorethan7years.

ABSTRACT:

A simple powder metallurgy approach is reported for producing metal matrix composites reinforced withnanoparticles showing outstandingmechanical strength and hardness. Themetal and nano-reinforcementpowders aremixed in a high energy ballmill and the resulting blends are hot compacted using a uniaxialpress.Highenergyballmillingwas indeedsuccessful indispersingdifferentnanoparticulatematerials intoanAlMg5alloymatrix.Carbonnanotubes(CNT)aswellasAl2O3orSiCnanoparticulatematerialscouldbethusdisperseduptoabove10vol%.Hardnessimprovementsbyafactorof4-from70to275HV20-couldbeachievedfortheaspressedcompositeswith5vol%CNT.Theultimatetensilestrength(UTS)increasedfrom290MPaforrawAlMg5to700and720MPawith1vol%aluminananofibersand0.5vol%CNTrespectively.Howeverthesehighstrengthcompositesdramaticallysufferedfromlowductility.Typically1%ofelongationatrupturecouldbemeasuredinthebestcases.Themillingconditionsliketheprocesscontrolagent,themillingtimeandthemillgeometryhavethenbeencarefully investigatedandtheiroptimizationallowedreachingareasonablecompromisebetweenhighstrengthandhighductility.ForinstancethecompositeAlMg5-0.5vol%nanoAl2O3(meandiameter20nm)showsthefollowingmechanicalproperties:500MPaultimatestrength,475MPayieldstrengthandanelongationatrupturearound10%.Alinearregressioncouldbedrawnbetweenthestrengthandthestrainofthecompositesreinforcedwithlessthan1vol%ofaluminananoparticles.Thesemechanicalpropertiesarecomparableorevenbetterthanthosereportedforcommercialavailablealloysforwhichacostlyspecialheatorworkhardeningtreatmentisrequired.

He then embarked on a 10-yearcareer in the semiconductor industry, holding positions atMicronTechnology andTexasInstruments,Inc.Thereheworkedondevelopingnewmaterialsandprocessesforintegratedcircuit fabrication. ABSTRACT:

Thetalkwillfocusonstrategiesthatwehavebeendevelopingtoimproveelectrodematerialperformanceincapacitiveenergystoragedevices,includingconventionalpseudocapacitors,hybrid supercapacitors, and microfabricated supercapacitors. The talk will cover thedevelopment of organic and inorganic electrodes that offer both macroporosity andmesoporosityusingin-situnucleationoncurrentcollectors.Theresultantmorphologiesofsuchelectrodesfacilitateelectrolytepermeation,reducedeviceresistance,andprovidelargesurfaceareasforfasterreactionkineticsattheelectrodesurface,therebyincreasingdevicecapacitance.Developmentofnegativeelectrodematerialsforthefabricationofhybridandasymmetriccapacitivedevices,whichworkathighervoltage,willalsobecovered.Finally,recentdevelopmentinflexibleandmicrofabricatedsupercapacitorsforself-powereddeviceapplicationswillbediscussed.

ABSTRACT:

Cleanwaterhasbecomeanimportantcommoditytoduetogrowingworldpopulation,increasingindustrialplants,anddepletionofsomeconventionalfreshwaterresourcessuchaslakes,riversand groundwater. Therefore, water filtration/purification or water reuse and desalination haveemergedaskeyssolutionstoalleviatethewatershortageproblem.Amongthevarioustechnologiesusedtoproducedrinkablewater,membranebasedtechnologiesareincreasinglyadopted,inwhichmembranes are made from polymeric materials (commercially dominant due to its maturity),ceramicsandcomposites.However,polymericmembranessufferfromlowflux,excessivefouling,andlowresistancetochlorine,whileinorganic/ceramicmembranesofferpotentiallyhighpermeateflux,highsaltrejectionandenhancedfoulingresistance.Theyareparticularlysuitableforprocesseswithhightemperaturesandharshchemicalenvironmentsduetotheirhighthermal,chemicalandmechanicalstability.Ontheotherhand,theperformanceofceramicmembranesisdictatedbytheirmorphologyincludingporesize,shape,density,anddistributionandsurfacecharacteristics,whichare crucial to control during their fabrication. Thesurfaceofmaterialsofteninteractswiththeenvironment,whichmaybeagas(e.g.air)oraliquid(e.g.water). This interaction can be detrimental to the material and cause its degradation by corrosion. Nanomaterials, especially rare earth oxidematerials (nano tomicro size particles), have beenshowntoeffectivelyprotectstainlesssteelsandotheralloysfromhightemperaturedegradation.However, recently we discovered the unique antioxidant properties of these rare earth oxidenanoparticles,whereitprotectsmammaliancellsagainstdamagecausedbyincreasedreactiveoxygenornitrogenspecies,andhasbeenshowntoactaseffectivesuperoxidedismutasemimeticinvitro.Theredoxabilityofrareearthoxideshasbeenusedinawiderangeofapplicationssuchas threeway catalysis, oxygen buffer systems, sensors and corrosion prevention.While thesenanostructures have beenwidely used inmany inorganic applications, their role in biology ascatalystisnotexploredfully.Thispresentationwillprovideabriefoverviewoftheapplicationsoftheseuniquenanostructuresintreatmentofdisorderscausedbyreactiveoxygenspecies(ROS).Itwasfoundthattheredoxkineticsofregenerativeoxidenanoparticlescanbecontrolledwiththetypeofmediumandtheirimplicationsinnanobiomedicineispresented.

Dr.ChristianDreyer,born1971inIdar-Oberstein,Germany,obtainedhisDiplomadegreeinChemistryfromtheTechnicalUniversityofKaiserslautern,Germany,in1996withathesisaboutTriazineContainingDendrimers.HeobtainedafurtherdegreeinAnalyticsandSpectroscopyfromtheUniversityofLeipzig,Germanyin1999beforereceivinghisPh.D. inPolymerChemistry fromtheBrandenburgUniversityofTechnologyofCottbus,Germanyin2002,honoredwiththeprizeforthebestPh.D.thesis.From1996-2006heworkedasascientistattheFraunhoferInstituteforReliabilityandMicrointegrationinTeltow.In2002heworkedasavisitingscientistattheClemsonUniversity,SC,USA.Dr.Dreyerjoinedin2006theautomotivesupplierLEONI,Nuremberg,Germanyasheadofthechemical laboratoryoftheCentralResearchandDevelopmentDepartment.Since2011heisDeputyDirectoroftheFraunhoferResearchInstitutionforPolymericMaterialsandComposites,Teltow.Hisresearchinterestsaredevelopment,synthesis,characterizationandprocessingofthermosetsforlightweightconstructionand(integrated)opticalapplications.Dr.Dreyerisalsoresponsibleforalternativecuringmethodsofthermosettingresins;includingUV-curing,IR-Curing,E-BeamandMicrowave-Technology.ChristianDreyerisauthororcoauthorof75papersandhas34patents.

ABSTRACT:

Thermosetbased lightweightconstructionmaterialsareused inmany industriesduetotheirhigh(thermo)mechanical performance. However, the cross-linked structure of the thermosets, which is responsible fortheirgoodperformance,isnotalwaysanadvantage.Conventionalrecyclingandrepairmethodsareoftennotapplicableforthermosettingpolymers.Themostfrequentlyusedrecyclinganddisposalmethodsforthermosetcomposites,whicharelandfilling,burningorgrindingintoarawpowder,arenotefficient.Thestate-of-the-artrepairmethodsaremostlybasedonremovingthedamagedareabygrindingormilling,followedbystickingnewlayersevenifthecompositeisonlyde-laminated.Inthecaseofadelamination,itwouldbemoreefficienttoremovethedam-agedmatrixwithoutdamagingtheendlessfibers.ForthisreasonFraunhoferPYCOdevelopedasimple,efficientandquickrecyclingandrepairmethodforcyanate-andcyanate-epoxide-basedcomposites.Cyanatesare formedviacyclotrimerization reaction fromat leastdifunctionalcyanatemonomers,showinghighglasstransitiontemperatures,thermalsta¬bilityandhighme-chanicalstrengthaswellasalotofotherexcellentproperties.Furthermore,cyanatescanreactwithavarietyofcompounds,e.g.epoxides,givingthepossibilitytoproducepolymerswithtailor-madeproperties,forexampleforapplica¬tionsacquiringfastcuringorcuringatlowtemperatures.Regardingtotherecyclingprocess,thematrixresincanbedecomposedandfiberswithgoodpropertiescouldberegained.Therecyclingofcyanateesterscanbedoneunderrela¬tivelymild conditions (from room temperature up to 190 °C) using a special class of agents, producing triazine-containing structures, aswell as phenols. The particular recy-cling product composition and the recyclingtimedependon thespecific formu¬lationandon theparticular recyclingagent.Recycling timesbelow1harefeasible.Furthermore,thedecomposedmatrixcanbereusedinthepreparationofnewthermo¬sets,e.g.polyurethanes,epoxidesorpolyacrylateswithglasstransitiontemperaturesupto130°C.Concerningrepair,thematrixcouldbedecomposedinawell-definedareaandtheun-coveredfiberscouldbeimpregnatedwithnewresin.Bychoosingtherightagentandreimpregnationresin,themechanicalperformanceoftherepairedcompositeiscompar-abletotheperformanceofanewpart.

After studying chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe (today KIT), Germany, Professor Patrik HoffmannstartedhisPhDthesisatEPFL,SwissFederalInstituteofTechnologyLausanne(Switzerland)in1988underthesupervisionofProf.H.vandenBerghandProfessorE.sz.Kovàtsoncontinuouswavelaserdirectwritingforrepairtechnologiesofmicroelectronicdevicesandcompletedin1992.AfterapostdoctoralfellowshipatIBMAlmadenResearchLaboratories,SanJose(USA)from1992-1993,whereheworkedongasphasephoto-dissociationprocesseswithExcimerlasersandsurfacecoatingtechnologieshereturnedtoLausanneasgroupleaderintheAppliedOpticsLaboratoryheadedbyR.P.Salathé,atEPFLfocussingonlaserinducedlocalizedchemical vapour deposition processes and improving the technologies for production of near field opticalprobes(SNOMtips).Industrialexperienceinanelectrochemicalcompanywasacquiredfrom1995-1997asdentalsectionmanageratGrammTechnik(Germany).From1997until2009hecarriedoutresearchonLaserMicro-Processing,surfacecoatings,andFocusedElectronBeamInducedProcessing(FEBIP).Since1997heisteachingonthebachelor,master,andPhDlevelinmicro-engineeringandmaterialssciencesatEPFL.In2009hebecameheadoftheLaboratoryofAdvancedMaterialsProcessingatEmpa,SwissFederalLaboratoriesforMaterialsSciencesandTechnology,continuingteachingatEPFL.Heisauthororco-authorofmorethan111peerreviewedjournalpapersandinventororco-inventorofhalfadozenpatents.

ABSTRACT:

Laserbeamsaswellaschargedparticlebeams(electrons,ions)enteredintoindustrialprocessingforcarryingout specific tasks of local energy input. From very small energy input, i.e. changing solubility of so calledresistsinmicroelectronics,throughmeltingmaterialsinweldingprocesses,tohighenergyinputinmaterialsevaporation,orifappliedinveryshortpulsesevenveryrapidablationofmaterials.Both,removalanddepositionofmaterialsbytheselocalenergysourceshavebeendeveloped.Herewefocusongenerativeprocesses,i.e.deposition ofmaterials either from solid, liquid, or gaseous precursors for growing structures. Limitationssuchasprocessingspeed,resolution,andmaterialsqualitywillbepresentedandcompared.Focusedelectronbeam induced deposition of puremetal nanostructures to laser inducedmicrostructureswill be presentedand discussedwith impact on the generative processes starting from largermaterials precursors such asmicrometricsizedpowders.Focusedelectronbeaminducedetchinganddepositionareindustrialprocessesforsemiconductormask repair.Theelectronbeamshave replacedFocused IonBeamsdue todramaticallylower interactionwith thesubstrate tobe repaired, theveryprecious lithographymasks.The latterarekeyelementsformassiveparallelmassproductionofchipsinsemiconductorindustryandsincerecentlyalsoinmobileelectronicsindustry.LaserdirectwritingbyLCVDorbylaserdepositionfromelectrolyticmetalsolutionsallowgrowingstructureswithrelativelysmallgrowthrates,duetolimitedmetalprecursorsupply.Laserweldingprocesses on the other hand are not limited bymaterials supply, but still speed limited for obtaining highqualitywelds.Thesetwoprocesslimitationswillremainthechallengesinmoderndirectlasermeltingadditivemanufacturingprocesses.Takingthecasethatthematerialssupplyissufficient,theheatmanagement, i.e.reasonableheatingratestoavoidexcessiveevaporation,keyholeformationorconductionmelting,andmicro-structure tailored cooling, have to be optimized in high quality high reliability laser generative processing.Productivity enhancement canonlybeachievedbyselectionor synthesisof idealmaterialsdestinated foradditivemanufacturing.
