OUR JULY SHOW Compere: Don Jones Stage Design: Billie & Tom Lyons Lighting: Paul Taylor Sound: John Bennetts Stage hand: Barry Wonnacott. Entertainment: Lorraine Davey Stage Design: Billie & Tom Lyons T.O.S.C.I. Band: Christina Boyd, Peter O’Brien, John Fordham SHOW THEME: “Christmas In July- Bastille Day & American Independence Day”

Our pianist for the evening Christina Boyd along with Peter O’Brien and John Fordham, set the mood for our Christmas in July theme with Sleigh Ride. Compere, President Don Jones, Welcomed all attending, not a large but an enthusiastic audience. Don then invited Pam Fletcher to the stage to report on Social Events, *see “What’s on with Pam” in your newsletter for details. Don Jones performed his Elvis Impersonation with CC Rider introduction music. Problems with sound caused lots of laughs, finally fixed for Don to sing Blue Christmas. Act 1: June Mellett: Wearing a beautiful red dress in keeping with the Christsmas in July theme sang When a Child Is Born followed by One Alone from the Desert Song and Sleepy Lagoon. I seem to recall it being the theme tune for the BBC’s Desert Island Discs radio programme. Act 2: Laurie Harnett: In white dinner jacket sang White Christmas followed by a popular Frankie Laine hit number I Believe.

Act 3: Pam Fletcher: In an Exquisite Black Dress with exquisite shoes. Began her set with an old Vera Lynn song, You’ll Never Know. Followed by Once in a while. Finally had us all joining in with Singing the Blues. Act 4: Don brought the first half of the show to a close with one of his hilarious comedy routines. The July Birthdays were read out with Lorraine & Pam presenting birthday gifts.

Don Jones requested all be seated for the second half of the evening and inviting Lorraine and Pam to organize the drawing of the raffle. Act 5: Don Jones assisted by Aurora – Don wearing Indian Head Dress, invited Alan Ward to the stage, Aurora blindfolded him, strapped him to a board, and Don threw knives at him. Alan was awarded a balloon poodle for his bravery. Act 6: Loreta Hodson: Elegantly dressed opened with a moon-related Tin Pan Alley song Silvery Moon. In true Loretta style we were entertained with Wien, du Stadt meiner Träume translated is Vienna City of My Dreams. Finally back to the theme of Christmas in July with an Old Fashioned Christmas. Act 7: Vincent O’Connor: Wearing a suave dinner suit had no need for a mike began with Lucky Old Sun. Vincent sang Darlin’ Girl from Clare in true Irish style, a song written by Percy French who was one of Ireland's foremost songwriters and entertainers in his day. Finally inviting everyone to sing along with The Most Wonderful Time of the Year. Act 8: Aurora MacKrill: Swished on to the stage in her beautifully striking gold dress to perform Big Spender. Returning to the Christmas in July theme she got everyone singing Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer. Slipping into Minnelli mode Aurora sang Bye Bye Blackbird. There is much speculation about the meaning of this song. At least two commentators attribute the song to a, “lady of the night” leaving the business and going home to her mother. Don joined Aurora brought the evening to an end with We Wish You a July Christmas and invited Laurie to sing As Time Goes By. Thanks to the TOSCI band, the committee and their helpers for another successful Showbiz original night. Christina Boyd, John Fordham and Peter O’Brian sent us on our way home with a medley of Christmas Songs. The Original Showbiz Club website is up and running for those of you with internet access. www.tosci.weebly.com I forgot to mention in last month’s show report that Bryce McMillan operated our spot light as Paul Taylor was unable to attend due to illness. As Betty Eastgate was unable to attend our July Show at the last minute due to illness, I extend my thanks to Ann Newman and Bryce McMillan who, thank goodness, relieved me of this task and took over the seating allocations. I would also like to thank Rick Litchfield who assisted them.

Cheers ‘til next month, Kay.

PAGE 3 PRESIDENTS PATTER & TOSCI NEWS

PRESIDENT’S PATTER There weren’t many attending this month’s meeting. Partly because of the cold and wet weather or maybe because of illness. Never the less it seemed that everyone had a good time. There was lots of laughter and that’s something a comedian loves to hear. Strangely though I noticed that most of you were laughing at things that appeared to be going wrong. My attempts to get the music started for my Elvis Presley impersonation. I hadn’t planned it, however it got a response that all comedians love to hear, and that is laughter. Why do we laugh? Well it's funny you should ask, most people would guess that we laugh because something is funny. But if you watch when people actually laugh, you’ll find this isn't always the case. People will laugh at the end of sentences in response to unfunny

comments or questions such as “Look, Pauline’s arrived” or “Are you sure it’s her?” each statement is followed by a little chuckle. People in a group will laugh for just being together no matter what is said or done. We can consider this as social laughter. Have you noticed how difficult it is to supress a laugh even if we know it is inappropriate? The reverse is true also. It is difficult to laugh on demand. The most important social feature of laughter is how contagious it is. Just listening to someone laugh is funny. To test this, try laughing for no reason. Start with a forced laugh and if you keep it up you will soon find yourself laughing for real. This will prompt others to start, usually with a remark like, “What are you laughing at?” A trick often used by comedians is to laugh at the end of a joke or gag; this is known as priming the pump. Laughter makes laughter. However laughter is not always used for positive reasons. For all the good feeling that goes with laughing, there is also a dark side, when someone is laughed at to belittle or show disdain. I think you will agree no-one likes to be laughed at. Always remember that you can laugh at your spouse or partner, but do not laugh and point at the same time. See you next month. Don

JULY 2015 SHOW SNAPS

OUR JULY SHOW

THE SOUND OF FLUIDS .

As you know I try to present a pantomime for the December meeting. This year I

was hoping to present my version of The Sound of Music in parody form titled The

Sound of Fluids.

However because December is a difficult month to get people together I would like

to do it in November.

For this I will need good singers and they will be singing to musical backing. I

see it presented in concert form rather than as a directed play.

I would like to gather the cast as soon as possible so a good number of rehearsals

can be done.

Here is a list of the characters Maria Female lead Four Nuns Mother Superior, Theresa, Bernadette and Agatha. Von Krapp Male lead Lotta’s boy friend Rolf Seven children Willy, Gunter, Lotta, Mustapha, Wanda, Ava, Lucy.

I would love to have the child characters to be close to the age depicted in the

original show. So if you know any young people who would like to play a

character I would be pleased to hear from you.
