August is Rotary Membership and Extension Month!

Membership has been at the heart of Rotary ever since it

was founded on a chilly winter day in Chicago, US on

February 23, 1905 with just four members. Since then the

growth of Rotary has been phenomenal 1.2 million

members. This speaks of the commitments and engage-

ment of Rotarians in every affairs of human life in peace

and war, from literacy to healthcare, from sanitation to

poverty alleviation, and disaster management with the

Rotary motto of ‘service above self’.

But the membership seems stuck at 1.2 million since

2003, which needs a self-conscious look. Membership in

the traditional home turf of Rotary US and Canada has

declined by almost 10-12 percent in the last 10 years

while in Japan it is more than 20 percent. At the same

time there has been significant growth of membership in

India, Asian countries and former communist blocs.

There has been significant growth of membership in

Bangladesh especially with the ftowth of new Rotary

Clubs. But the membership growth of Rotary Club of

Dhaka, as the premier club of the country, has declined in

the last few years. The main reason is the loss of old

members, which reflects the Club’s weakness in the

retention of old members. It needs real assessment

especially in engaging the members in various projects

and programs of the Club. Although there is a great deal

of talks on the membership growth in the Club but out-

come has not been positive, considering the tall target of

inducting 23 new members in this RY. To achieve this

target every member of the Club should actively

contribute in the membership growth by introducing at

least one new member, at the same time the leadership

needs to plan and engage each member in the various

activities of the Club to make the Club vibrant. Rtn PP Khandker Badrul Hasan, PHF

Join me in celebrating Membership Month My dear friends,

We often talk a great deal about membership. Quite naturally, the

focus is on recruiting new members, but in the process, we lose sight

of an equally important task — that of retaining existing members.

As Rotary celebrates Membership Month, I want to ask what Rotary

means to you. I invite you to share your story not only with Rotary but

with your personal and professional networks — not only why you

joined, but why you are still a member of Rotary today. Is it because

of the difference you’ve made in your community or because of the

lifelong friendships you’ve made? Speak of the personal benefits that

you have derived from your membership in Rotary, whether it’s the

satisfaction from reaching out to someone who desperately needed

help or the gains in your own life that came from the opportunities

and connections available to you through Rotary. Sharing your Rotary

story could help inspire someone to join. Promoting our exciting

member benefits program, Rotary Global Rewards, will not only help

you get more transformative work done but will also show new and

potential members the added value of being a part of the Rotary

network. Find out more yourself about this new program and how it

can be used to enhance the Rotary member experience. Encourage

others to do the same. The Member Center is now home to a number

of resources to help you better serve your clubs and districts, including

brochures like Be a Vibrant Club and Strengthening Your Membership:

Creating Your Member-ship Development Plan. Exploring,

understanding, and using these tools can help you engage and retain

your members.

Every year, the Rotary International Convention serves as a great way

to experience what it truly means to be a part of Rotary. A promotion

kit for the 2016 convention in Seoul is now available. The kit provides

digital and print resources to promote the convention to your club or

district. Go to the Seoul convention site, find the kit in the Resources

section, and use it to encourage your fellow Rotarians to attend. With

your help, the 2016 Rotary Convention could be the biggest yet! By

encouraging a new member to attend the convention, you will have

given him or her the opportunity to be well and truly convinced of the

reach and breadth of Rotary. Membership is important year-round.

We must continue to give potential members more reasons to join,

and current members more reasons to stay. Let us work together to

strengthen our membership base and to encourage others to join us

as we work to improve our communities and to Be A Gift to the World.

Quotable Quotes

“Primarily Rotary seeks to apply the theory of service to business and community life....This is expressed in the

first part of our code of ethics: To consider my vocation worthy and as affording me a distinct opportunity to

serve the society. He Profits Most Who Serves Best is a less ideal expression, but the suggestion of egoism is

removed by the added words, Service Above Self.” — Donald A. Adams, RI President 1925-26: Address to

1926 Rotary Convention, Denver, Colorado, USA
