PONTCHARTRAIN YACHT CLUB JUNE 2014 THE CHART COMMODORE’S CORNER– DICK JONES ARTICLE – June Chart WOW! May was a one of the most exciting months I have ever seen at the club. Our Opening Day Ceremony was a great success. The Reverend Gene Finnell gave the invocation and blessed the fleet. Rebecca Fairborn, our guest singer sang the National Anthem that, in my opinion, was the best I have ever heard. The NFL needs to contact her. Donald Villere gave a nice presentation on the benefits of living in Mandeville and the surrounding areas. Our PYC Juniors marched through the muck & mire of the front yard and conducted the flag raising ceremony flawlessly. After the conclusion of the ceremonies the party began. Great band, Brian Burke’s famous BBQ pork butts and all the sumptuous sides and desserts from the members. If you were not there you missed a real good time. Sailing Sundays is off to a great start. Sailors and non-sailors are showing up and getting out on the water. We even had a raft up just like the old days. The Harbor Mice were back in May thanks to Joe Bishop. Most of these young sailors are enrolled in Sail Camp starting in June and they will be return after camp. PHRF Spring Series brought a number of sailors out on the lake. Unfortunately the second day was cancelled due to the lack of wind. The J30 Mid Winter Regatta was held on the same weekend. One team drove all the way from Detroit, MI and placed second. Ken Buehler and his crew took the first place honors. Congratulations to Ken and his crew! Movie nights have been a big hit with the kids and their parents. We will be offering as variety of G & PG movies to attract a wide range of ages along with burgers, fries and other snacks for sale. Clancy Powell has taken charge of this weekly event. Thanks Clancy. Thanks to Court and Kaia the membership drive has been a terrific success. Thirty new members were approved in April & May. Two days into June and we have four new applicants! A big thank you to all of you who have volunteered to help Tom Jarvis with his need to repair or fix list and helped assembling the new picnic tables, Friday night food, race committee and during Opening Day. The “to do “list for House & Grounds is growing and Tom cannot do it all by himself. We ask for volunteers to help in order to keep our costs down. The alternative is to hire outside help and that can be very expensive. I encourage all of you to help by volunteering to work on a project. Two or three hours a week can make a big difference to help minimize our expenses. See you at the club. Dick Jones

WOW!

REAR COMMODORE– TERRI HAMILTON April was a good month at PYC, and although the closing of May is happening as we speak, it looks as though May will be a good month for the club also. We have had a few unexpected expenses this month such as the draining of the pool, but looking over our history, unexpected expenses are not unusual. As a homeowner I'm sure you can relate to this. We are well into our 7th year at the new PYC and things are wearing out and need replacing. We have purchased new grills and picnic tables as well as new umbrellas for the pool. The need to purchase used up “stuff” will continue but thanks to savings for capital improvements, we are able to do this without hurting our bottom line. I would like to welcome all of the newest members to our PYC family. I hope you enjoy the club as much as my family

A little housekeeping note to start: To whomever "borrowed" glass sailboats from the windows and tables in the bar-please return them to the club. They are my personal decorations and NOT club property to be "borrowed". We all like for the club and bar areas to look nice for events and often-times members of the Social Committee use their own personal items to supplement club decorations. This inevitably results in said members expecting to get their items back when we move on to the next event and redecorate!! Thanks!!

Dust off those secret recipes and start recruiting your BarBQue Crew now for the July 4th Rib Cook-Off-We're looking for 10 teams to compete in this annual event. Club supplies the ribs and fixings, you supply the labor and the winner is determined by "Taste Test" vote!!

    Now on to June!!

June 3rd -Book Club at 6:30 PM

June 6th - Grill Your Own - You can bring your own meat and purchase sides (potato, salad, bread and dessert) from the club for $6.00 or order your meat from Paul or Kaia AHEAD OF TIME. You MUST sign up for the grill nights so that we can prepare adequate amounts of side dishes. When you sign up at the bar or through the office please tell Paul or Kaia if you are signing up for sides only or want to get your meat through the club. Deadline for all Grill Nights will be the Thursday night prior at bar close-Please don't wait until Friday to let us know you want to eat, we will have already purchased the food and we don't want anyone to be left out or go hungry.

June 13th - Pasta Dinner - Come have dinner at the club and watch the rise of the FULL MOON on Friday the 13th!! How cool is that??!!

June 15th - FATHER'S DAY BRUNCH hosted by Kaia– her menu sounds FABULOUS-stay tuned!!

  • JUNIORS– CHRIS FRIEND

Our Juniors opened Pontchartrain Yacht Club with a textbook flag raising. Thanks to all who participated! Thanks to Bob Hodges who gave many juniors (and some not-so-juniors) fast rides on his Corsair Sprint on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

The Harbor Mice program, organized by Joe Bishop with West Melton and sons on kayaks. Thank you Joe and West for devoting your time and energy to the future of our yacht club.

Here is Joe’s report: Our youngest sailors, The Harbor Mice, sailed the first three Sundays in May, in club Optimists. Most, if not all, had never sailed before by themselves. With very little instruction, sensing instinctively the basics of trimming and steering, and almost as soon as they were turned loose, the Harbor Mice were tacking and gybing, and racing one another like old pros. Because they only sailed in the harbor on their way to the lake, we need a more appropriate name for this class! These intrepid sailors were: Paige & Presley Bishop, Jack Dardenne, Dylan McKnight, Alex Neumann, Carmen Patterson, Mason & Matte Porte, Amelie Schell, and Christian Lemoine. Because many of the kids will attend sail camp, I suggest we wait until sail camp is over before continuing with the Harbor Mice Program. A special thanks goes to all the parents and grandparents for the help they gave: Those helping include West Melton, Stan Marsolan, Dustin Porte, Mike McKnight. The Harbor Mice were not the only juniors on the lake. They were joined by two Flying Scots, Sunfish, a Laser Radial, and an O’pen Bic as the Sunday Sailing program had a prodigious start. We had over 12 sailors sailing each Sunday. Tristan Connault was on staff to assist sailors getting on and off the water. Thanks go to Billy Ross and Dave Bolyard for getting the Flying Scots together the first day. It sure is nice to see all these boats on the water! We will continue this program throughout the summer, which is NOT limited to juniors or club boats. Please join us!

Forty-three boats braved the elements for the School’s Out Regatta on May 31 and June 1. It was dominated by a fleet of 27 Optimists, with 8 Laser Radials and 7 Sunfish. Saturday was a weather disaster. When it wasn’t raining, there was no wind and when there was wind, there was lightning and torrential rain. The Burger Babes did not disappoint as they provided the shoreside food while the fleets waited until racing was abandoned for the day shortly after noon.

Sailors got an early start on Sunday as we “threaded the needle” and we started with light southeast winds and finished the day with 12-15 knots and great surfing waves at 1230. The fleet hit the dock just as the wind picked up to 30 knots and the rains fell again. Pontchartrain junior participants included: Colin Friend in the Optimist Blue Fleet; Christian Lemoine in Optimist Green Fleet; Allison Naquin, James Lipscomb, Maggie Sides, and Rylan Doolittle in Sunfish. Allison was top junior in Sunfish. Maggie and Rylan received a special participation award. Maggie also received a “Big Dave” award for persistence, patience, and a great attitude in her first big regatta! Thanks to all the volunteers, especially: Dottie Williams, Anita Pons, Erin Powell, Judi Jones, Sharon Kirk, the Burger Babes, and Leigh Wanless on shore. Thanks to Shan Kirk and his crew for running the Opti advanced fleet; Chris Brown from Ocean Springs YC, PRO for the Green Fleet; Karen Reich and Dave Bolyard (judges); Dick Jones, Craig Toomey, and Dave Bolyard on the Laser/Sunfish course; and especially Kaia Schindler for awards, setup, and generally helping pull it all together. For full results, see https://www.nextsailor.com/docs/files/100/SchoolsOutRegatta2014_(1)4.html.

Sail Camp started on June 2. There is still room in Session 3 and we also have a waiting list for those who still want to send their kids to camp. Please contact Kaia for more information.

    Race Report:

As I write this report for the Chart in late May, I am at sea aboard the 48' sailing catamaran "Second Wind" owned by Commodore Fred Blossman, one of Pont YC’s founders and second commodore. The boat was in Cape Eluthera, Bahamas having cruised the Bahamas the previous six weeks. We are on a homeward bound cruise to Destin,Fl, her home port. I mention this for general interest to all sailors but also because I don't know when I will have internet service for transmittal to the club in time for the Chart. Let's hope.

June will be a very busy month for racing beginning next week end with the "Schools Out Regatta". I'm sorry to be missing the regatta but it's conduct has been placed in the very capable hands of Chris Friend as PRO. I am sure it will be a very successful regatta and I will have many volunteers to thank for it's execution.

The Race to the Coast sponsored by SYC will be conducted on June 14th as a feeder race to get the boats to Gulfport Yacht Club in preparation for the Gulfport to Pensacola race.

June 20th will see the start of the annual Gulfport to Pensacola Offshore Race. There should be several boats from Pont YC competing.

The GYA Challenge Cup will be June 27-29 in Pensacola Bay hosted by Pensacola Yacht Club. Pont YC is expected to have 4 boats competing. More later on how we faired as results unfold.

The annual J-30 Mid-Winter Championships were held at Pont YC on May 17-18. Mid-Winter you may ask? The cold weather did last a long time this year but timing was just the way it worked out with GYA and Pont YC schedules. We did have a crew come all the way from Michigan. Our own "Jalapeno" continued her dominance by 1st place finishes in all races.

My thanks to ALL volunteers of Pontchartrain Yacht Club who give freely of their time and resources to help conduct our regattas. Everyone's help is appreciated. We cannot do it without you. If you are new to the Club and want to get involved please speak up. We always need help and we will make it easy to integrate with our numerous committees.

Let’s start Summer with a bang! Coming up on June 4th, we will have a wine tasting hosted by our friends Arielle Leblanc-Smith from Artisan Fine Wines and Josh Dunham from Uncorked Fine Wines. We’ll be tasting some interesting varietals, and I’ll be throwing together some hors d’ouvres for you to munch on. After that, on June 19th, we’re going to have an event I’m pretty excited about, a chicken wing and beer pairing. I’ll be cooking up six different types of chicken wing, some spicy, some not. Vanessa Gomes from Champagne Beverage will be pairing up some beers to match. These are the first of what I plan to be a Summer full of bar events. As usual, if there’s anything you guys would like to see happen, let me know. Prost! Paul

  • Page 5 MEMBERSHIP–COURT RICHARDSON Here we are, summer is upon us and there are many new and returning faces to PYC. The overwhelmingly positive response to the membership drive has brought us twenty applicants in the month of May and eight in April. Thanks to everyone who has helped. It's so great watching the club buzzing with activity. Isn't it nice seeing young and old alike enjoying PYC?

Since we have so many applicants I'm going to have to keep this brief. Brady & Mary McKeogh Portia Bishop Faye & Charlie Witkowski (returning members) Kent & Latisha Payne Morgan & Joshua Person Susie & Ed Wiedeman Danny & Hillary Boudreaux Elisha-Rose & Brian Neal Mike McKnight Bill & Maureen Paul Troy & Brandon Davis Stephen Croft Scott & Debbie Graham Lauren Golden & Helaine Suskin Paula Cannon Susie & Roy Hardin Mark & Caroline Moennich Bradley Jarvis Philip Mears & Marta Maria Daniel & Barbara Cousins

Our reduced initiation membership drive ended May 31st and as I mentioned above was a resounding success. Let's all remember that we have a beautiful facility, many fantastic activities with a great family of members. It's still a great value with the normal $750 initiation fee so let's keep bringing in new members. Please have interested friends come to the club or contact me.

Sunday sailing has been a huge success. Many have volunteered their time and thanks specifically to Kaia for organizing and watching over to ensure fun is had by all. Keep watching your email for news of upcoming events such as Sunday sailing, Thursday night "Movie Night" (also gaining popularity) and much more!

Don't forget, the next membership mixer will be held on Wednesday, June 11th at 6 PM. The “mixer” is held for three reasons:

Show appreciation to all of you for your continued dedication to PYC

Welcome new members approved within the last quarter

Showcase what PYC has to offer to potential members

As always, please take time to get to know our new and returning members.
