New customer leadsOne of the challenges facing carpet cleaning business owners is in generat-
ing new customer leads. The most popular and most profitable method is in the
category of “Referrals.”
Generating referrals virtually guarantees a quality customer, as the hard
work is already done. If you receive a call for cleaning services from a referral,
that new customer has done his or her homework. They know who you are, your
reputation and, often, your pricing structure.
“Referrals are the best,” one respondent said. “I hate all other forms of
advertising. I love it when customers call me to book an appointment, rather
than to question our abilities.”
And that’s why 93 percent of respondents listed “Referrals” as their best new
customer lead generation marketing method.
ProfitabilityInterestingly, the category of “owner’s compensation” experienced an adjust-
ment from 2013 to 2014. In 2013, the $50,000-$99,999 category in personal
earnings was at 22.3 percent. In 2014, that number jumped up to 28.4 percent.
It may be that more owners are working not just “in” the business, but “on”
the business. The percentage of those actively involved in the physical labor of
cleaning went from 72.6 percent (2013) to 78.2 percent (2014).

The 2014 Carpet Cleaning Benchmarking Survey Report is believed to be representative of carpet cleaning professionals responding to the survey, but it is not a scientific survey. Results are not necessarily based on audited financial statements.
