WELCOME TO SEATTLE

2008 ITA National men’s team indoor championships program

On behalf of the University of Washington Department of Ath-letics, welcome to the Nordstrom Tennis Center for what will un-doubtedly be a wonderful week-end of tennis. The UW is proud to host, for the fifth time, the ITA Na-tional Men’s Team Indoor Champi-onships.

We are also proud of the reputa-tion of the Nordstrom complex

and of our staff and know that, with the partnership of the Seattle Tennis Club, Seattle will again prove to be an excep-tional host for this prestigious event.

As a member of the Seattle Sports Commission, the UW as-sists, whenever possible, in bringing high-quality spectator

events to the Seattle area. The level of tennis competition seen during the National Team Indoors weekend certainly fulfills that mission, and we know that spectators and par-ticipants alike will be thrilled by the excitement sure to come during the course of this event.

So, welcome – whether your experience is on the courts or in the stands, we trust your time here will be memorable. Should you have any comments or questions, please let us know so that we can improve for future hosting opportunities.

Enjoy!

Scott Woodward, University of Washington Interim Director of Athletics

Dear players, coaches, officials and fans,

The Seattle Tennis Club is very pleased to assist the Uni-versity of Washington in hosting the 2008 ITA National Men¹s Team Indoor Championship.

Those of you who are tennis historians may be interested to know that the Seattle Tennis Club played a key role in hosting the NCAA tennis championships more than 50 years ago. Actually, the STC has been host to many great Northwest tournaments over its long existence, includ-ing the Washington State Open (now in its second cen-tury), the National Senior Indoor Championships, as well as many Satellite events.

As a former college tennis player myself and son of a college coach, I feel especially proud to take part in this year¹s event, due to the high caliber of play exhibited at

the collegiate level, which makes this one of the best tennis events ever in the Northwest.

We look forward to this event returning to Seattle in the future, and hosting more of the event’s festivities.

On behalf of the members of the Seattle Tennis Club and its Board of Trustees, welcome to Seattle and good luck to all the teams who have qualified for this prestigious event.

Most Sincerely,

Doug VerdieckDirector of TennisSeattle Tennis Club

THE ITA

2008 ITA National men’s team indoor championships program

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), a non-profit organization, has been serving the collegiate tennis community for the past 50 years. The ITA was founded in 1956 by the late J.D. Morgan, tennis coach and then athletic director at UCLA. Morgan served as the first president of the organization (which was known as the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Associa-tion until 1992). The ITA has been headed since 1979 by Executive Director David A Benjamin, who also served for 26 years as the Director of Tennis and men’s varsity tennis coach of Princ-eton University, retiring in 2000.

The ITA, which serves as the governing body of collegiate tennis at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College lev-els, has worked hard over the past decades at achieving its charter goals:

“To foster and encourage the playing of inter-collegiate tennis in accordance with the highest tradition of sportsmanship and consistent with the general objectives of higher education.”

“To develop among the intercollegiate coaches a deeper sense of responsibility in teaching, promoting, maintaining and conducting the game of tennis.”

“To educate and serve those individuals and groups who are involved in collegiate tennis: junior and college players, their coaches and parents, and the at-large tennis public.”

The ITA promotes both the athletic and aca-demic achievements of the collegiate tennis community. Throughout the collegiate tennis season the ITA administers numerous national championships: the Polo Ralph Lauren Men’s

All-American Championships and Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships present-ed by Fila, ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, ITA National Small College Championships presented by the USTA, ITA Na-tional Team Indoor Championships, ITA Division III Men’s National Team Indoor Championships and an ITA National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Championship starting in 2007. The ITA admin-isters 80 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships (for both Division I and Small Colleges) each fall as well as the ITA Collegiate Summer Cir-cuit presented by the USTA, at 24 regional sites across the country each summer. The ITA also administers regional and national Fila Colle-giate Tennis Rankings for men’s and women’s tennis programs in all divisions.

The ITA has a comprehensive awards program for players and coaches to honor excellence in academics, leadership and sportsmanship. This awards program includes the ITA All-America Teams, the Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year awards, the ITA National Player of the Year, USTA/ITA Community Service and Campus Rec-reation Awards for coaches, ITA Collegiate All-Star Team, and the ITA Achievement Award pre-sented by the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Rolex Watch U.S.A., which honors past par-ticipants of collegiate tennis who have achieved excellence in their chosen careers and, in doing so, have made special contribution to society.

The ITA, USTA, National Intramural-Recre-ational Sports Association (NIRSA) and World TeamTennis (WTT) have joined forces to pro-vide non-varsity players of the college age the opportunity to learn and enjoy the game of

tennis on college campuses through the “Ten-nis on Campus” pathway. A byproduct of this program has been the USTA Campus Champi-onships held each spring. This event crowns a national champion for co-ed club and intramural tennis teams.

For more information about the ITA and its pro-grams, please feel free to contact the ITA office, which is based in Skillman, New Jersey, at (609) 497-6920 or via e-mail at [email protected]. The official ITA website is www.ITAtennis.com.

HOST INSTITUTION

2008 ITA National men’s team indoor championships program

Washington Huskies

It is a sign of the consistent excellence expected by the Washington men’s tennis team when an NCAA appearance, third-place Pac-10 finish, and an NCAA Singles Semifinalist is viewed as a down year. Yet that was the consensus after the Huskies’ 2007 season reached a premature end in the NCAA first round. Now the task for 14th-year Head Coach Matt Anger is to turn the year into a blip and guide the Huskies back into the late stages of the NCAA tourna-ment. Washington has reached the final site of the NCAAs five times this decade, and despite a near total roster turnover since their last appearance in 2006, the latest batch of Huskies is anxious to prove themselves. 2008 marks the 100th season of Husky tennis, and the season will provide an opportunity to show how far the program has come, and where it is headed in the next 100 years. One of Anger’s largest and most talented fresh-man classes is the reason behind the optimism. Five true freshmen and one junior transfer join two redshirt freshmen and four veterans who started in singles in 2007. In the fall, all the newcomers showed glimpses of good things to come, while the returners exhibited continued improvements. “We have a lot of new bodies out there playing,”

said Anger. “So the fall was a great time for them getting used to playing college matches. As always, it’s a time for us to work on their game, but for me to just review how they’re playing in matches and then make sure that we’ve got a good to-do list when it comes to working on their games as we head towards the season. It’ll be a whole new ball game now when they play team matches, because that’s something that they haven’t done.” Anger could ask for no better leader for the freshmen than senior captain Andy Kuharszky. A three-year starter, Kuharszky has improved every season and judging by his play in the fall, when he reached the ITA Northwest Regional final, he is ready to lead the team on the court as well as off. “The main thing we struggled with last season was pulling out close matches, and Andy is vital to us in those situations,” said Anger. “He’s at his best in the team matches, when the matches are close, so we will really lean on Andy for that. He’s been there and done that.” The team will be tasked with moving on in the post-Alex era of Husky tennis, as Alex Slovic ended his Husky career with an amazing run to the NCAA Semifinals that left him as the UW career combined singles and doubles wins leader. Slovic, a lefty from Serbia, had followed All-American Alex Vlaski, another lefty from Serbia, meaning Washington’s top singles spot will have a new name penciled in for the first time since 2002. Without Slovic and the person he shared the all-time doubles record with, Daniel Chu, there is more mystery to this Husky team than in years past. But that mystery stems from an abundance of talent, and mystery usually leads to exciting finishes.

“I have good question marks. It’s not like I’m wondering who I can throw out there,” Anger says. “Where we’re going to be strong this year is through the meat of the lineup, where maybe last year that was a bit of a weakness compared to this year’s team.” Washington will be nothing if not battle-tested by the time the NCAA Championships roll around in May. The Huskies face difficult road battles early in the season, a rejuvenated Pac-10 Conference late in the season, and play host to the premier invitational team event in college tennis for the centerpiece to their schedule. For the fifth time, Washington hosts the ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championships, which will gather 16 of the nation’s elite at the Nordstrom Tennis Center and Seattle Tennis Club, from Feb. 15-18. Washington has pulled significant first round upsets over top-10 teams the last two times UW has hosted, and will likely have to do so a third time to move ahead in the field. “It’s a thrill for us to host, selfishly, where we get to play on our own courts, but also for Seattle and the community,” said Anger of the event. “I think this year it may look like a challenge because we’re going to be ranked in the 30’s in the preseason, but I think we’re a lot better than that. We’re going to have to play a top team right away, so that’s tough for us, but it’s going to be tough for them too. I think at the end of that tournament our new guys are going to know what college tennis is all about. Hopefully it’s through good results, but even if it’s not, they’re going to be ready for the remainder of the season and the Pac-10.”

Intercollegiate Tennis Association sanctioned, regional and national tournaments benefit more than 15,000 participating collegiate ten-nis players from all ITA member NCAA, NAIA and Junior/Community College schools. The ITA sanctions over 150 tournaments during the season, in addition to administering 80 regional and nine national championships.

ITA Men’s All-American Championships and Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships The ITA Men’s All-American Championships and the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Cham-pionships are both held in October and are the first of three national championship events for Division I tennis during the season. The men’s championship began in 1979 while the women’s championships started in 1984. The ITA Men’s All-American Championships are being hosted by the University of Tulsa for the fourth straight time in 2008. The Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships have hosted by the world famous Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Pali-sades, Calif., since 1987.

ITA National Small College Championships presented by the USTAThe ITA National Small College Championships began in 1986 and annually crowns men’s and women’s singles and doubles national cham-pions in each of the ITA’s four small college divisions (NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College) during the month of October. These championships are the only national tournaments for singles and doubles at

the NCAA Division II and NAIA level, and the only tournaments that combine all levels of Ju-nior/Community College tennis. Participants are determined through the Wilson/ITA Regional Championships, held in September and October, which serve as qualifying tournaments. The na-tional champions from each division then square off in the “Super Bowl” of Small College Tennis to determine the overall ITA National Small Col-lege Champions (who then earn berths into the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Champion-ships). The 2008 event is being hosted for the second time by Mobile (Ala.) Tennis Center.

ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Singles & Doubles ChampionshipsThe ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Cham-pionships take place in November and are the second of three national championship events for Division I tennis during the season. The event was hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus for the third straight year in 2007. The ITA National Intercollegiates began in 1978 and were expanded to include women’s championships in 1983. The event features a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including winners from Wilson/ITA Regional Champion-ships held across the country in October, the ITA National Small College champions, the winners of the ITA All-American Championships and at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 5,000 players from nearly 600 schools par-ticipate annually in the ITA Regional and Na-tional Intercollegiate Championships.

ITA National Team Indoor Championships, ITA Division III Men’s National Team Indoor ChampionshipsEvery February, the ITA also administers nation-al team indoor championships, sponsored by the United States Tennis Association. The 2008 ITA Men’s National Team Indoor Championships, created initially as an invitational event in 1973, will be hosted by the University of Washington in Seattle. The ITA Women’s National Team Indoor Championships began in 1988 and has been hosted each year by the University of Wis-consin in Madison. Both of these events feature 16 of the top teams in the country. The ITA Divi-sion III National Men’s Team Indoor Champion-ships began in 2001 and the eighth annual event will be held at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., in 2008.

ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit and ITA Na-tional Summer Championships The ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit presented by the USTA, began in 1993 under the leader-ship of Lin Loring, a member of the ITA Board of Directors and the women’s tennis coach at Indiana University. The Circuit consists of six regional circuits held across the country dur-ing the month of July. Over 20,000 men and women have participated in circuit events since its inception The ITA National Summer Cham-pionships presented by the USTA were added to the circuit calendar in 1994. The men’s and women’s singles and doubles champions from this event earn wild cards into the Polo Ralph Lauren Men’s All-American Championships and Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Champion-ships presented by Fila. The 2007 ITA National Summer Championships were hosted by Indiana University for the seventh straight year last Au-gust.

USTA National Campus ChampionshipsThe USTA, through a cooperative effort between the ITA, the National Intramural-Recreation Sports Association (NIRSA) and now World TeamTennis (WTAA), created a plan in 1999 to provide non-varsity players of the college age the opportunity to learn and enjoy the game of tennis on college campuses through the USA Tennis pathway. The USTA National Campus Championships began in 1999 and has set a new participation record each year it has been held. The 2008 championships will be played in Cary, North Carolina in April.

Bulldogs top Ohio State in final to repeat

CHICAGO – Top-seeded Georgia beat No. 2 Ohio State 4-0 in the final at the U.S. Tennis Associa-tion/Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Men’s Team Indoor Championships at the his-toric Midtown Tennis Club. The University of Il-linois was hosting the event presented by DLA Piper.

This was Georgia’s second straight Team Indoor title. The Bulldogs were the sixth team to repeat as champions at this event since its inception in 1973.

Georgia (8-0) won the doubles point in the final and got wins in singles from freshmen Jamie Hunt and Nate Schnugg and senior John Isner. Isner clinched the match at No. 1 singles, beat-ing Bryan Koniecko 6-3, 6-4. The win was Isner’s 40th straight in a dual match dating back to 2005.

Schnugg beat Ohio State’s Justin Kronauge 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles and Hunt topped Drew Eberly 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6. Schnugg went 4-0 in singles during the tournament and Hunt went 3-0. They also went 4-0 at No. 3 doubles. In September, 2006, they won the U.S. Open junior doubles title together.

“I’m really impressed by how our guys re-sponded against a great Ohio State team,” UGA coach Manuel Diaz said. “We came in knowing our freshmen (Hunt and Schnugg) were com-ing along, but weren’t sure how they’d respond here. But we found out we have a great fresh-men group. They really came through for us here.”

This final was the first time the top two seeds have played for the title since 1996 when No. 2 UCLA beat No. 1 Stanford. This was Georgia’s second championship in five final appearances. Ohio State (10-1) was making its first final ap-pearance.

“When you play a team like Georgia you know you’re only going to have one opportunity and you can’t squander it,” Ohio State coach Ty Tucker said. “We had some chances in doubles, but couldn’t capitalize. We’ll go back to the drawing board now and just try to keep getting better.”

Ohio State beat No. 3 UCLA 4-2 in Sunday’s semifinals. Georgia beat No. 4 Virginia 4-2.

Located just north of Husky Stadium, the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center is one of the Northwest’s most modern indoor tennis fa-cilities. The doors of the indoor facility at the University of Washington were opened with dedication ceremonies on June 1, 1989.

The tennis center, sporting six courts, was made possible by a $2.5 million donation from the family of the late Lloyd Nordstrom. Mr. Nor-dstrom played on the Husky varsity tennis team from 1930–1932 and was noted for his love of the game and his loyalty to the University. Illsley Nordstrom, his wife, said, “My family is proud to honor the memory of Lloyd W. Nordstrom with the presentation of this indoor tennis center to the University of Washington . . . we feel he would be honored and delighted.”

All six courts at the Center have been renamed by Husky tennis donors. In 1999, Court Two was renamed Sosnowy Court in honor of the family that donated the first fully endowed scholarship for women’s tennis. LaGayle and John Sosnowy established the Sosnowy Family Endowed Tennis Scholarship in recognition of their daughter and former Husky, Kori Sosnowy.

Then later in the summer, the Sosnowy’s dedicated Court One to UW’s former athletic director, naming it Barbara Hedges Court. John, LaGayle and Kori Sosnowy also established the Barbara Hedges Endowed Women’s Tennis Scholarship.

The Sosnowy’s also dedicated Court Three to UW senior associate athletic director, Marie Tuite. They also established the Marie Tuite Endowed Women’s Tennis Scholarship.

Court Four was named the Sedlock Family Court in recognition of the Thomas J. Sedlock Endowed Men’s Tennis Scholarship established by Tom

and Greta Sedlock. Court Five was named “Sidney Pinch Court” in

August 1990, in recognition of the $100,000 donation made by Pinch to the Washington tennis program. Pinch, a long-time Seattle businessman and Tyee Club member, made the donation to fund, in perpetuity, one tennis scholarship each year.

The last court to be named was Court Six in 2003, named for Neal Dempsey in recognition of the Neal Dempsey Endowed Scholarship.

In addition to the six courts, the complex includes seating for up to 278 spectators, locker rooms, a snack bar and space for other support activities.

The Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center aids the Huskies in recruiting the nation’s top competitors to Seattle. Prior to the opening of the tennis center, Husky tennis teams rented indoor courts for use during periods of cold and inclement weather.

In September of 1989, the Nordstrom Center was selected by the USTA’s Technical Committee as one of the outstanding tennis facilities for 1989.

The USTA Facility Awards Program, now in its 21st year, was established to stimulate high standards in the construction industry and then to recognize facili-ties which make such a positive statement about the vitality of the game.

The tennis facility is used primarily as a competi-tion and practice site for the Husky varsity men’s and women’s tennis teams. The center has also been made available to UW students, staff and faculty as scheduling permits.
