THE LONGEST ROAD IN THE WORLD

The world’s longest road is the Pan-American Highway, which runs for 30,000 kilometres and passes through seventeen countries in North, Central and South America.

This famous road begins in Prudhoe Bay in the USA and ends in Ushuaia in Argentina.

One part of the road is called the Northern Pan-American Highway and goes through nine countries. The other part, which is called the Southern Pan-American Highway, travels through eight countries.

There is a break of a hundred kilometres in the road in Central America, called the Darien Gap. This is because there are lots of rivers there, which make the land very wet and impossible to build a large road on.

The building of the Pan-American Highway started in Mexico in 1937 and finished thirteen years later in 1950. The Mexican people were proud to be the first to complete their part of the longest road in the world.

Some people have become famous for travelling along the Pan-American Highway. Tim Cahill, an American, drove a car from Ushuaia to Prudhoe Bay in twenty-four days, while Kevin Sanders, from the UK, took thirty-four days to ride the length of the road on a motorcycle. Another British record breaker, Dean Stott, cycled the 30,000-kilometre journey in just under a hundred days.

KAMI RITA

Kami Rita is a forty-nine-year-old Sherpa. Sherpas are men and women whose job is to carry heavy things up and down mountains for mountaineers. These are people who climb mountains for sport. They need

the help of Sherpas to reach the top of very high and difficult mountains. Sherpas come from the small Asian country of Nepal, which is home to Everest, the highest mountain in the world.

Kami Rita has climbed Everest twenty-two times, which is more times than anybody else. His father was also a Sherpa and taught Kami Rita how to climb mountains and carry heavy things in one of the most dangerous places on Earth.

Kami Rita first climbed Everest when he was twenty-four years old and has done the same thing almost every year since. He plans to climb the mountain twenty-five times in his life because it would make him feel very proud and happy.

In May 2014, there was a serious accident on Everest. A lot of snow and ice fell onto the tents of a group of Sherpas. Luckily, Kami Rita’s tent was on a different part of the mountain, so he was not hurt.

The accident has not stopped Kami Rita from climbing. He says, “I don’t want to give up this job, even though I’m old for a Sherpa. While I’m healthy and strong, I’ll keep going. It’s very hard work, but I love my job”.
