Parts B and C : Listening Comprehension of TOEFL 41

OVERVIEW for B: Extended Conversations and C: Mini Talks

In Part B and C of Listening Comprehension section, there are three to five questions for each passage. Usually the first and sometimes the last question are overview question . To answer thesequestions, you need an understanding of the whole lecture or conversation rather than of any specific point. Main idea, main point and main topic must correctly summarize the talk. Incorrect answers for these are too general, too specific, or incorrect according to the talk.

Although these questions require an overall understanding of the talk, the first few sentencesoften set the scene. In other words, the opening lines of the talk frequently establish the time, place, andmain topic. So pay more attention to the first lines to get the general idea of the talk.

Common Overview Questions : occupations of the speaker(s) or the audience, the place or time of dialog/talk, the topic , subject , or purpose of the dialog/talk.

DETAIL QUESTIONS FOR PARTS B and C

Most questions in Parts B and C are detail questions that require an understanding of specific points. A majority of these questions are factual questions (what, where, when, why, and how much).

Others are inference questions (the answers are not directly stated, but implied /suggested by the giveninformation). Remember that the order of detail questions follow the order of the conversation, so that itwill be better if you follow the conversation by glancing through the answer choices of mentioned items.
