A Coy.crossed the s ta r t l ine a t 1400hrs.,picking up Lt.Harling :lforward patrol and the F.D.D.'s carrier on the way over. The advance progressed rapid ly i th seven Pl. r ight forward, eight Pl.l e f t forward,Coy.H.Q.in centre followed by Pl. in reserve. The Tanks behind the Coy.were heard f ir ing to begin with, but thism i x a ~ K x x K died dovm and they disappeared.First contact occured in the vehicle park beside the main road. The enemy withdrew after f ir ing a few rounds, before the Coy.attackplan was completed. The original formation was quickly regained, and the Coy.made good thefeatuee opposing the objective. Further advance down the forward slopequickly brought eight Pl. under f i re from ridge of GRIZZLY FBATURE.Terraced orchard and vineyard, travassed by several sunken tracks, produced excellent coverand allowed immediate and rapid progress.Eight Pl. committed to f i re support, inf i l t ra ted ~ u i c k l y to base of hi l land were able to engage the enemy's attention most sat isfactori ly .Cpl.Terry,with Privates Webster,Montgomery, and N i x o n , ~ c t u a l l y reachedthe tbp and took over a HM , MG., they held this position unt i l forcedback by counter attack, when they took two prisoners and threw the HunGun over the c l i f f .n the meantime a r ight flanking movement was under way. Seven Pl.

with the D.C.followed by i ~ e Pl.and Coy.HQ,worked round to the right,Southern end,of the feature in excellent cover. The South end proved to be narrow and so steep that i t was not covered~ f i re a t a l l . Elements of the coy.quicklj carried the top,and theadvance into the enemy's rear and flank began.Tactical surprise hadvbeen achieved, and a fiem footing was estab-lished on the Southern end of the Plateau.Thirteen prisoners were ropnded up, too young to ki l l ,and theybshowedgratifying terror of their own Mortar bombs. The Plateau was traversed diagonally by a rocky i idge terminating at i%i t s North West end on a Casa with the usual out buildimgs.South of the ridge, the plateau sloped gently to the South, covered withDlive t rees, but no underbrush.North of the ridge the ground was open meadow with heavy cover at theextreme North edge. The enemy quickly forsook his ridge positions andtook up a l ine covering a l l the open ground to , the North with someelements further forward.Eight Pl.quickly joined the Coy.,and together with WiNe Pl.gained theNotth West a n d ~ e n d s of the rocky ridge.Seven Pl. in reserve, and Coy,HQ took up positions in the IDlive groveSouth of the ridge. Having been continually engaged in hard fighting mfor twenty four hours the Coy.was getting thin on the ground and veryt ired,consol1dation s h o ~ e d up this weakness and i t wascdecided tocombine eight and nine platoons under Lt.Harling.to hold the Casa.Lt.Robinson.O.C.seven Pl.had been wounded, and L t . comparatively harmless. With eight and W i ~ e concentrated at the Cas athe O.C.took Cpl.Terry.roud the r ight flank to prevent any enEmycounter attack round South East end of rocky ridge. Unfortunately C p l ~Terry.was shot by a sniper as soon as the rmdge was passed,&nd he died 'two hours l a te r under morphia.C p l T e r r y m K ~ the only RXXHKXtyX fa ta l casualty of the action, diedfulf i l l ing the finest tradit ions of his regiment and Coy.,a job wasto be done,he did i t . ;Except for constant Mortar f i re , things qUltened down as dusk fe l l .Sentries were posted and a l l possible men told off to sleep.Darkness brought much needed access to the exposed drinking water wellThe Radio had lasted long g h to ask for food and water, and kDthenpetered out completely.Midnight brought a show of the expected counter attack. An inc r easeof Mortar f i re preceded by heavy MG f i re and a few grenades. The Company's l imited supply of ammuninion permitted only rest r icteddefensive f i re but the Hun quickly shut up and went to bed.At five in the morning the real counter attack came in, the advancinginfantry were supported by very heavy machine gun and r i f le ~ : t x Hgrenade f i re .The fort i tude and f i re disc ipl ine of Lt.Harling's force were too muchfor the Hun. The 36 Mills bout proved most effect ive.The Huns yelled as they came in and screamed as they went out.The melody was provided by the strains of, Ukla Luka lllka from Lt.Harling.at the top of his lungs and the rhythm by bursting grenades. At 0545hrs.Lt.McLean.arrived on the Southern end with 14 Pl.of c Coy.The f i r s t reinforceme ts he was immediately ordered to round the l e f tedge and exploit the counter attack of eight and nine Pls.which was Xralready under way.y 0600hrs. the h i l l was in our habds c O I ~ p l e t e l y Further reinforcementssoon arrived and were told off to consoliuation tasks.A Coy.settled down to count the loot , tune in the BEC on the Hunradio, and sleep.
