June Meeting. The June Region One Meeting was in Galveston on June 8, 2013. The meeting was called to

order by President Calvin Walker who also led the prayer and the pledges to the American and Texas Flags.

Members were welcomed by Amelia Collins and in attendance were Former Chief of Police and immediate past

Sheriff Freddy Poor; Present Sheriff Henry Trachesset; and Sergeant Destin Sims, Galveston City Liaison.

The Speaker was Texas Ranger Joe Haralson-only one that has award for “Ranger of the Year”. He says that

citizens make us successful, they are extra eyes and ears for law enforcement, which enhances law enforcement.

TR Joe Haralson is current Sr. Ranger; Worked for Department of Public Safety and his role as a Texas Ranger;

1937 DPS; 1923 Texas Ranger; 1935 reorganized Primary Investment Arm of DPS, Motor Vehicle Div.;

Criminal Div.; Rangers primary work on felony cases; 150 TX Rangers in Texas, he works Chambers, Galveston,

and Brazoria County along with other agencies; Cold cases-advancement in crime scene evidence processes such

as DNA and AFI-automatic finger printing identification. Border Security-violence not enforcing immigration,

just violence, criminal situation, trying to keep it on the other side of the river; Re: Reorganization-had part-time

S.W.A.T. team in Austin, 10 man teams, work for locals. He ended up as team leader mostly an adult supervisor

for all the young ones, fast rope training, he volunteered for this training of jumping out of plane and he pulled a

fake injury, told a friend before he jumped out, and his friend jumped out holding his knee. They are trained in

every avenue of the criminal area, such as hypnosis, forensics, etc.; Body Farm in Knoxville, Tenn, also one in

San Marcos, TX; The DPS boats-patrol Rio Grande and the Intracoastal Canal. Just the presence, hopefully,

curtails some of the stuff happening on the river, etc. Took the rangers up to Brownwood to a lake and taught

them how to use this boat. Not to turn it over, then he saw a park ranger’s boat and it was turned over. Book-

“One Ranger”, Retired Ranger, Joaquin Jackson, Alpine, TX; Criminal Intelligence-approve, evaluate, and

assimilate, all of the evidence; Jurisdiction extends across Texas; in other states the Texas Rangers might be

called the State Police. He was asked if a citizen police academy might be started. He said that one would be at

the regional office in Houston off of Hwy. 290 and Dacoma.

Billy Boelke said he took the FBI Citizen Academy in Texas City; Linda Strevell presented a hat to Texas

Ranger Joe Haralson.

Following the routine business meeting, the upcoming convention was discussed and association reports were

made.

Galveston. We got the scoop on Seawall Parking, and paybyphone.com from Sgt James Stewart, GPD,

at our August meeting. Follow the instructions on the signs to pay online or by phone. Parking is

enforced from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., from 1st Street to 69

th Street on the Seawall. The City and Police Dept

set up 2-hour parking limit neighborhoods [residential permits exempted] and no parking except with

residential permit. Police will be using license plate scanners to monitor compliance. Sgt Stewart

explained a lot about the selection of paybyphone, an international service based in Canada. He also

described the planning and meetings with residents in the neighborhoods adjacent to the Seawall.

Proceeds from parking tickets issued go into the City’s General Fund.

Galveston was represented at the State Convention by Linda Strevell, Sgt Destin Sims, and Amelia

Montgomery County Sheriff. July: We helped with a benefit for one of our long time members that needs a

kidney and liver. Our liaison officer’s son is in Afghanistan and we are sending him packages. We have been told

that he is very popular over there because when the mail comes he seems to get all the boxes. He takes a couple

of things out that he needs and then sets them out for the others get what they can use. A suggestion was made to

us by Kenny Smith of Kustom Suntan that we take a group picture and send to him. We did and the top row

people are holding the American and Texas A&M flags. We also had our election for President and 2nd Vice

President. We are happy to announce Mike Manning as President and Karen Ham as our 2nd Vice President. We

are ready for fun and lots of activities.

August: We helped with the annual DWI Tracker Benefit. This benefit helps to fund this organization in getting

drunk drivers off the roads. We are looking forward to hosting each of you in September. We will be helping

with National Night Out in The Woodlands. School is starting and we will be helping Kenny Smith do the annual

Operation Back Pack for many of the military families.

We are really excited to announce that we have someone to help getting our Volunteer Hours together. Our hours

are totaled starting from 2010 to July 2013. We have logged 10,843 hours. We still have members slowly still

bring their hours in.

We reported earlier that our second class was to start August 8th. Because of only a very small enrollment of

applicants we had to cancel this class. This is the first time this has happened since our first class in 1998. Submitted by Jeanette Graff

MADD RECOGNITION Recently the La Porte Citizen's Police Academy Alumni Association was honored with a certificate of appreciation from MADD at the Texas Region One meeting hosted in La Porte on August 10th.

The LPCPAAA was selected based on efforts since 2010 that support law enforcement during DWI

No Refusal Nights in the La Porte area. On a typical night the volunteers take on the task of providing

meals for the enforcement officers on duty as well as participating in Ride-A-Longs with officers.

During the ride-a-long volunteers see firsthand the dangers of drivers under the influence of alcohol and

the process used to safely remove them from our streets. As Judge Mitrano said it best, "I was

wondering how I would stay awake all night but the volunteers helped the time fly by." This is one event

where our volunteers come out by the dozen to support and encourage all levels of law enforcement

participating in the DWI No Refusal process.

Andrea Schmauss (MADD), Maggie Stout, Doug Hathorn, Deb Hathorn, Norma Elliott, Phil Niewald (Houston

CPA/MADD), Judge Denise Mitrano, Chief Ken Adcox, Vicky Copley, Chris Copley, Brenda Pritchard, Officer Jeff Tippit,

Richard Browder (front row) Not pictured but definitely in attendance - Gary Tandy.

LPCPAAA Garage Sale Grosses $1174 for Blue Santa On Saturday, August 17th the LPPD Training Center turned into a huge indoor garage sale! Citizens, volunteers, LPCPAAAA members, officers, and even the Chief of Police cleaned out closets and garages to ensure we had plenty to sell. Volunteers worked feverishly on Friday to clean, sort and tag each item and we were even blessed to have a young granddaughter of one of the members offer to help! By the end of the day the room was ready and the garage sale signs were posted on visible corners around town. Let the sale begin! By the end of the day, due to the generosity of La Porte citizens and the special sales techniques of our dedicated LPCPAAA Members & Volunteers, we raised just over one-thousand dollars to purchase toys for the Blue Santa program at Christmas. One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit the needy children of La Porte's Neighborhood Center at Christmas, allowing many to receive gifts when they might not have otherwise.

MAN DOWN INITIATIVE

Throughout the course of their career, there are times when an officer is unable to do their own yard

work due to an injury or extended illness. Volunteers have solved that problem by initiating the "Man

Down" program whereby Alumni Volunteers mow the yard and trim the hedges once a week while the

officer recovers. Our first yard was mowed in August, lead by volunteers Richard Browder and Phillip

Ferguson. Way to go guys!

Summer Highlights 2013 - La Porte Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (Continued)

DARE & YOUTH SUMMER SAFETY CAMPS

Each summer many of our LPCPAAA Volunteers spend several weeks and days in summer camp

assisting officers to provide meaningful lessons on bullying, drug abuse, bike safety, stranger danger,

animal safety, water & gun safety, and other challenges children between the ages of 5-10 will face. This

summer was no exception. Close to seventy (70) children registered for the DARE and Youth Summer

Safety camps and at each camp they were met by a staff of friendly Volunteers. Many of the children

are return participants from the previous year and expressed delight when seeing "their" volunteers

again. In all, around ten volunteers assisted officers each day of camp to ensure their success.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Over the course of the summer several LPCPAAA Volunteers joined the LPPD and Neighborhood Center at the

Jennie Riley Civic Center in a cooperative effort to distribute food to the needy. In all, over 11, 455 pounds of

food provided by the Houston Food Bank was distributed by noon. In all, over 166 families received food over

the course of the day.

Volunteers helped deliver food, register new families and individuals for assistance as well joined in the

activities at the Basket Ball Court. Free hot dogs were prepared for nearby residents while children were treated

to games, SIDNE and tours of the D.A.R.E car, LP EMS, Fire and Police vehicles.

This effort was just a small part of the great work the Volunteers of the LPCPAAA does year round to help those

in our community in need. Special thanks to Kevin Dorsey, Josh Zech, Norma Elliott, Doug Hathorn, Deb

Hathorn, and Richard Browder.

In Case You Haven't Seen or Heard About This Important Benefit....... CALLING ALL MY MONKEY FRIENDS :: Tuesday, September 3rd, my restaurants & Gringo's Mexican Kitchen will be

hosting a one-day, companywide benefit in honor of Officer Mike Huffman (Pasadena Police Officer). After a tragic accident

in April, Officer Huffman is now fighting to get back to work; however, to get him there, he is in need of a prosthetic leg. My

team is stepping in to help and committing to donating 50% of our sales from Tuesday, Sept. 3rd. I'm personally asking all of

you to join us and dine at any of my locations or Gringo's on 9/3/13. Collectively, between my team members, patrons &

vendors, our goal is to donate upwards of $125,000 -- exceeding Mike's goal! Please Share.

Pearland. Class 37 will be doing their much anticipated ride along this month. National Night Out will be held on

Tuesday, October 1st. This event has been very successful in the past in raising awareness, educating the public about security

and building a strong relationship with our community. On Sunday, August 18th, a group of 10 of officers represented the

Pearland Police Department in the Inaugural Baytown PD Basketball Tournament which was designed to raise money and

school supplies for children in need. On Saturday, September 21, from 9am to noon Treasurer Billy Pyeatt will be

facilitating a “group think” in the PD training room to determine our future as an organization.

HAPPY 18TH ANNIVERSARY PCPAAA PCPAAA it is all about the Volunteers

by Sgt. Jon Matherne It is hard to believe how fast time flies when you really sit down to think about it. The PCPAAA was formed in

1995 and has helped educate 37 CPA classes at our Department. So many exceptional volunteers have come from

the classes. To all those past active, currently active, and those who are no longer with us, we are in debt to and in

awe of each and every one of you. A volunteer has the most precious thing a person has to offer and that is your

time. A quick stroll through the halls of your Police Department shows the dedication of your endless efforts.

Seeing your plaques, pictures, awards and generous donations speak to your success. We simply would not have

been able to reach out to our community in the positive ways we have done without your commitment. Take a

look at the names on those plaques and in those pictures, each person has had a story to tell and many have made

personal and monetary sacrifices for the betterment of the PD. For those no longer with us, in our hearts you will

never be forgotten. As we conclude the year, I would like to say thank you and happy 18th Anniversary

Male or Female? You might not have known this, but a lot of non-living objects are actually either

male or female. Here are some examples:

FREEZER BAGS: They are male, because they hold everything in, but you can see right through

them.

PHOTOCOPIERS: These are female, because once turned off; it takes a while to warm them up

again.

They are an effective reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed, but can also wreak havoc

if you push the wrong Buttons.

TIRES: Tires are male, because they go bald easily and are often over inflated.

HOT AIR BALLOONS: Also a male object, because to get them to go anywhere, you have to light

a fire under their butt.

SPONGES: These are female, because they are soft, squeezable and retain water.

WEB PAGES:

Female, because they're constantly being looked at and frequently getting hit on.

TRAINS: Definitely male, because they always use the same old lines for picking up people.

EGG TIMERS: Egg timers are female because, over time, all the weight shifts to the bottom.

HAMMERS: Male, because in the last 5000 years, they've hardly changed at all, and are

occasionally handy to have around.

THE REMOTE CONTROL: Female. Ha! You probably thought it would be male, but consider

this: It easily gives a man pleasure, he'd be lost without it, and while he doesn't always know which

buttons to push, he just keeps trying.
