With only 4 weeks remaining until the end of the school year for 2016 it is certainly proving to be a very busy time. Years 9 and 10 have completed their examinations and this Saturday night will see the Formal celebrations for Year 12.

On Wednesday I had the pleasure of attending the Victor Chang School Science Awards in Dubbo where Georgia Reddish was recognised for her outstanding achievements in Science at Gulgong High School. This follows on from a successful excursion for our female students to an Engineering workshop last week where many of the ‘myths’ regarding employment in this industry were disproven. The experience was thoroughly enjoyed by all the students and again exposed them to another career path available to them.

Each term a Principal’s Morning Tea is held to recognise student attainment of Gold and Silver Level Awards. With assessments and examination marking taking place a significant number of merit awards will continue to be issued by staff over the next two weeks. To ensure that all students have the opportunity to be recognised for their achievements, the Term 4 awards will be combined with the Annual Presentation Day Awards. This will also enable parents to attend a single presentation ceremony at this busy time of year.

I would like to acknowledge the Parents and Citizens Association who have made a significant donation to assist with the purchasing of student lockers for the use of Year 11 students in 2017. The staff and students greatly appreciate this contribution and their ongoing support of school initiatives.

I will be on leave from next Monday the 21st November until Tuesday the 6th of December. During this time Mr David Tooney will be relieving as Principal and Mrs Kathryn Lane as Deputy Principal. I appreciate your support of these staff in my absence and I look forward to seeing you again upon my return in Week 9.

Both Year 7 classes had a taste of France on Wednesday November 9th, with a lesson dedicated to

tasting various foods originating in France.

The event started with a French drink – ‘Diabolo Menthe’ (mint lemonade) and ‘Vin’ (non-alcoholic)

served with Baguette and a range of cheeses.

The main meal was Quiche Lorraine and Escargot which the majority of students were keen to taste.

The favourite food for the day was croissant with chocolate or jam and cream.

A few fun French class photos were taken to celebrate the day, and the students left with strong feelings

for their favourite (and least favourite) French foods!

Several students from Gulgong High School participated in the M3 maths challenge in Mudgee a few weeks ago. The competition is designed to develop and test students' problem solving and communication skills through a variety of activities. 3 of the activities required the teams to work together quickly to solve problems. There was also an individual activity similar to an examination. The tasks were challenging and our teams demonstrated excellent perseverance and team work throughout the day. The experience was invaluable and the students enjoyed themselves immensely.

Last Thursday, Year 8 attended an Aboriginal Education day at Red Hill. The excursion was based on learning about ecology and Aboriginal lifestyle. We split into groups and moved through several stations where we participated in different activities.

- We learnt about Aboriginal astronomy and tracking with star maps.

- We did hand paintings and made spinning tops. Mr Lee made the longest spinning time of 35 seconds.

- We learnt some Aboriginal sport games with Mr Hollow.

- We cooked Johnny cakes with Mrs Fuller and learnt about how plants and landscapes were used for tools, hunting, food and medicine.

- Lastly, we used Aboriginal symbols to paint our personal stories on tiles and learnt how to throw a boomerang.

We would like to thank the staff at Red Hill for taking the time to teach us, and also thank Mr Bennett, Mr Hollow, Ms Field and Mr Lee for going there with us and Mr Wilson for organising this trip. We had a great time and learnt heaps.
