TERM 4, 2017 .
Welcome back to Term 4! We hope that everyone had a
fantastic and restful break. Term 4 is once again looking like
another busy term for the Senior School with a range of
events and activities taking place to satisfy the many
interests and needs of our students.
Literacy
In Term 4 student will continued to develop their
understanding of the 6 Traits of Writing through a range of
genres, culminating in our major task for the term - a ‘Multi
Genre’ project. Year 6 students will be creating a scrapbook
of their primary school life, as a keepsake of their 7 years of
schooling. A different genre of writing will be developed for
each year. The year 5’s will also be completed a variety of
writing genre pieces, but will instead be based around
something they are passionate about.
Reading activities will focus on consolidating students’ skills
involving the concepts of sequencing, think aloud, making
inferences and predictions, visualising and summarising.
Students will continue to be exposed to a range of quality
literature to support their learning.
Numeracy
In Term 4, students will be supported to discover and
explore strategies to solve open-ended problems in different
ways, and make connections between their learning in the
classroom and using maths in everyday life. Targeted maths
groups will support classroom learning, and areas of focus
will include:
- Statistics and Probability
- Problem Solving
Rotations
Rotations will continue this term with a new range of
subjects. This day provides students the opportunity to
learn from a range of teachers, giving them an insight to
Secondary School. The three rotations will continue to take
place on Tuesday.
Government: Mr Tate & Mrs Ridley
Revues/Filming: Mr Halstead & Mr Dixon
Leadership & Transition: Mr Den Elzen & Miss Fraser
Transition
In Term 3, the Year 6 students received confirmation of
their 2018 placements into Secondary School. Year 5
students should be beginning to attend transition sessions,
school tours and orientations regarding their 2019
placements.
On Tuesday 12th December the students attending
Government Secondary Schools will be attending their Year
7 Orientation Day. If you have any questions or concerns,
please do not hesitate to contact Kali Fraser at
iPads
Students are not allowed to use their iPads during recess
and lunchtimes when there is a weather timetable. Students
are being encouraged to be more sociable with their friends
and take part in games and other activities.
Last year we found that most of the damage and ‘accidents’
occurred to iPads in the second part of the year as students
became more complacent about their device. Now is a good
time to discuss again with your child about how to care for
their iPad.
● Please ensure that the iPads are charged and ready for
school each day
● The floor is not a good place to leave iPads
● Ensure Apps are updated regularly
● No messaging apps
● Return home screen and lock screen to the owner’s

Homework
Continue to support your child to consolidate effective
homework routines, including time management and
personal organisation, in readiness for Secondary School.
Set homework will continue this term and can always be
found on the Senior School site:
http://bit.ly/chpshomework
Please keep in mind the all homework tasks can be
completed offline. If you have any queries about
homework please see your child’s teacher.
Physical Education
PE in the Senior school in term 4 is a mixture of lots of fun
and major games including Cricket and Volleyball. The T20
Blast School Competition is on again in October for bot boys
and girls. Students will be taking part in Fitness Testing with
the traditional Beep Test as well as Sit Ups and a standing
horizontal jump. These tests were conducted in Term 1 and
will be done again in Term 4 for a comparison. In general,
our students are pretty fit as they are involved in after
school sports clubs as well as our school community being
active within their families.

Science
This term in the Senior school, the students will be studying
a Biological Science unit called ‘Marvellous
Micro-organisms’. During this unit, the students will be
exploring how micro-organisms affect everyone. They will
discuss that some are helpful, while others are harmful and
also the impact this has on their daily lives. This unit
provides opportunities for students to develop an
understanding of the role of micro-organisms in food and
medicine. Students investigate the conditions
micro-organisms need to grow, learn about yeast and the
bread-making process, and research the development of
penicillin.

Visual Arts
This term students will have the opportunity to work with
visiting artist Rhonda Nadasdy. Students will follow
Rhonda’s creative process to develop a house, tree and bird
using the 3D medium of clay. Students will also learn the
difference between glaze application and painting to
complete their work. All students will have one piece of
artwork in the biennial Art Show, Monday 23rd October. The
Art Show will begin at 6:30pm till 8pm. Students will be
encouraged to discuss and respond about their creations,
using arts language in the process. Art Academy program
will be running again on Tuesday lunchtime. Exciting times
for our Year 6 students, as they will be working on our
Graduation Project, which will be revealed on Graduation
night. Student will have the opportunity to create artworks
based on Christmas.

Performing Arts
Classroom Music
Students will continue to create music using their voices,
ukuleles, xylophones, un-tuned percussion and the other
many and varied classroom instruments. They will dance,
play games, listen to and discuss various styles of music and
continue to learn to read and write notation. We will be
continuing to learn about film music and this term and
students will compose a film score for a short movie clip
using Garageband and iMovie. Students will be rehearsing
Christmas songs ready for the end of year concert on
Wednesday the 13th of December.
Music Count Us In
All students will take part in this initiative, whereby around
500,000 students from Australia and Australasia sing the
same song, at the same time, on the same day. The song is
‘Shine Together’ written and recorded by Australian
students, the time is 12:00 and the day is Thursday 2rd of
November. The event is live-streamed from 12 noon and you
can tune in from wherever you are to watch and listen.
Here is a link so that you can listen to this year’s
song and practise at home:

Choir
Choir will continue to rehearse on Wednesday lunchtimes
and Thursdays at 8 a.m. We have an enthusiastic and
committed group of choir members this year and families
have been fabulous at letting me know about absences. It’s
important to keep this level of commitment going right up
until the last rehearsal/performance. Students are expected
to participate in the Christmas Concert on Tuesday 13th of
December and at our annual Yarrunga performance, (date
TBA). I’m also hoping to organise an end-of-year
breakup/performance at Croydon Centro followed by a
movie at the Croydon Cinema.
iMUS Band (iPad / Marimba / Ukulele / Steel Drum)
This will start up again Thursday lunchtime in the second
week. We will be working on a song to perform in an
assembly this term (date TBA). Everyone is welcome.
Amana Temple
Indonesian
This term the Senior students will be using Indonesian to
talk about personal characteristics, using colours and a
range of adjectives to talk about eyes, ears, noses, hair etc.
The learning intention of this unit is to enable the students
to play a game of the board game “Guess Who?” in
Indonesian. Google classroom and various iPad apps
including Languages on Line are an important part of every
lesson and it is essential that students have their iPads
charged and complete with headphones for every lesson.
For students in Year 6 who may not be continuing their
Indonesian at Secondary school, the learning strategies that
we use, and skills such as the use of bilingual dictionaries
are good preparation for next year and transferable to your
next language. You know you can learn a language now, so
the next one will be even easier.
