Dear Parents This week is Child Protection Week, and focusses on the message: ‘Protecting children is EVERYBODY’S BUSINESS’. If you would like to find out more about the key messages of Child Protection Week, please visit the Child Protection website. I encourage everyone to visit the site and be informed. Child protection is everyone’s business and responsibility lies with adults in keeping children safe from harm. All members of society need to play a part in ensuring children are nurtured and safe. Adults are essential in ensuring children’s safety and well-being.

Congratulations to all our Year Six students who were mentioned recently in the Sunshine Coast’s, My Weekly Preview. Mayor Mark Jamieson recently visited Siena to speak with the students about local government and their views on the future. Mayor Jamieson commented that they were “an impressive group with great ideas”. This is great, positive feedback for our students. Throughout the year they have had a number of different opportunities to show leadership and represent their school with pride. As our Year 6 students prepare for their final term at Siena I am sure they will continue to achieve and display these positive leadership skills.

Next Friday, 16 September, is the final school day for the term. As noted in a previous newsletter a wide variety of successful learning, sporting, cultural and social events have occurred this term. This week’s Viva Siena (a showcase of all our musical talent) and next week’s Book Parade event are both examples of the high level of commitment, skills and support displayed by Siena staff. Successful, special events such as these happen, in no small part, due to the extra planning and time staff willingly contribute.

A Prayer In Child Protection Week We pray that all children will receive adequate food, clothing and shelter.

May they be nourished and nurtured in strong and loving families. All children have a right to protection

We pray that all children will be protected from violence and abuse.

May they be safe from harmful and hurtful words and actions.

All children have a right to education and play We pray that all children will receive a good education and be given

opportunities to relax and enjoy life. May they be supported and inspired by wise leaders and strong communities.

Peace and Blessings

Saint Mother Teresa On Sunday 4 September, Mother Teresa was canonised by Pope Francis in these words: “We declare and define Blessed Teresa of Calcutta to be a saint and we enrol her among the saints, decreeing that she is to be venerated as such by the whole Church."

The Pope said Mother Teresa had spent her life "bowing down before those who were spent, left to die on the side of the road, seeing in them their God-given dignity". He added: "She made her voice heard before the powers of the world, so that they might recognise their guilt for the crimes of poverty they themselves created. In his homily of St Teresa's work, Pope Francis said she had shone a light in the darkness of the many who no longer had tears to shed for their poverty and suffering. It was clear that her life reflected the kind of Church that this Pope is trying to build: one that shows mercy to all and offers practical help for the poorest and for all those in need.

Some 1,500 homeless people across Italy were also brought to Rome in buses to be given seats of honour at the celebration - and then a pizza lunch served by 250 nuns and priests of the Sisters of Charity order.

Born in 1910 to ethnic Albanian parents, Agnese Gonxha Bojaxhiu grew up in what is now the Macedonian capital, Skopje, but was then part of the Ottoman Empire. Aged 19, she joined the Irish order of Loreto and in 1929 was sent to India, where she taught at a school in Darjeeling under the name of Therese. In 1946, she moved to Kolkata to help the destitute and, after a decade, set up a hospice and a home for abandoned children. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. The sisterhood now has 4,500 nuns worldwide.

As a teenager and young girl, I always admired the work of Mother Teresa and was inspired by her humility and generosity. I feel privileged to have lived while she was alive.

Virtue Our virtue for the last two weeks of term is Courtesy. It is important for us to teach our children to be courteous to those they interact with on a daily basis. Being polite and using good manners brings a smile to everyone’s face.

Father’s Day I hope that all our dads had a special day with their families on Sunday. We pray for those dads who cannot be with their families, and for those who have gone to their Father in heaven.

Chess This week is the last week of Chess for this term. There will be no chess next week. Chess will begin again in Week 2 of next term. There will be an intraschool competition here at school on November 18. More information to follow.

By blood, I am Albanian By citizenship, an Indian

By faith, I am a Catholic nun As to my calling, I belong to the world

As to my heart, I belong entirely to Jesus. St Teresa, pray for us.

Blessings for your week, Elaine Sauvage

Dance Lessons with Miss Katie Thank you to Miss Katie and her helpers for the wonderful dance lessons our Prep - Year 3 students enjoyed this term. It was great to see so many parents able to come and share the last lesson with their children. There were lots of smiles, and groovy dancers, in the Daintree last week!

Swimming in Term 4 Our Prep - Year 3 students will be participating in swimming lessons at the Kawana Aquatic Centre next term. These lessons are designed to promote confidence in and around the water and should be seen as working in conjunction with other parent initiated efforts to teach their children to swim.

Our Year 4 & 5 students will be participating in a Surf Skills program in Term 4. These sessions are designed to promote our students’ safety and confidence at the beach. The final lesson of the program involves the students participating in a Beach Carnival. These lessons will be taking place at Alexandra Headland. A swimming timetable is attached for your information.

The Iceberg of Success Earlier this term, in the Newsletter, I mentioned how important it is to develop a growth mindset in our children - a belief that we can accomplish almost anything with hard work and persistence.

One way to encourage this growth mindset is to focus on the effort and persistence behind success. At the recent Olympics in Rio it would be easy to gloss over the countless hours and hours of training that every single competitor put in just to get there.

Mack Horton received his Gold medal not just because he is a talented swimmer, but because he took that talent and multiplied it through hard work and persistence.

Helping our children to see that hard work and persistence are essential to their success is a valuable life lesson.

Beyond the Classroom - Wildlife Warriors Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors invites students to participate in an initiative aimed at recognising young conservationists for the vital contribution they make to our wildlife and wild places.

The Wildlife Warrior Award is eligible to children and teens aged 5 to 17 who are making a significant contribution to conservation in their local community. They believe it’s important for young people to be involved in conservation projects because essentially, conservation starts and finishes with them. The next generation is key to a brighter, balanced future for wildlife and people, and with this award, Australia Zoo is hoping to encourage and inspire young people to continue making a difference in the world for years to come.

By simply visiting http://wildlifewarriors.org.au/entry.php and submitting their conservation project in the form of a 200-500 word essay or 60 second video, Visionary Wildlife Warriors can showcase their passion and commitment towards conservation for the chance to take home the official title after being awarded at the annual Steve Irwin Gala Dinner on November 26 in Brisbane. Projects should demonstrate creativity and passion for conservation, wildlife and the environment through activities at home, at school or anywhere else within their community. Australia Zoo hope this opportunity encourages the many passionate young conservationists on our planet to continue to follow their dreams and help make the world a better place.

Saint Mother Teresa of Kolkata Mother Teresa was canonised by Pope Francis on September 4 and became known as St Mother Teresa of Kolkata. Mother Teresa was well known and admired outside of the Catholic Church – a bit like Mary Mackillop here in Australia. Mother Teresa struck a chord in many hearts; she belonged to the world. People everywhere recognised a deep humanity in her love of the poorest of the poor. It was love that the world saw in her, that’s why we glimpsed something of God in her – and something of the best of each of us.

Over the next two weeks I would like to share a few of the sayings of St Mother Teresa of Kolkata. Sayings that can help us to live our lives

“In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love.” “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.”

“Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.”

All the best for the week ahead. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you feel I can support you or your children to more fully access the opportunities we provide here at Siena.

Three important social skills to help children develop. 1 Ask for what you want: Help children ask for what they want. It means they don’t throw tantrums, whinge, and sulk or expect parents to guess what’s on their minds. While we tend to be more patient with toddlers, we also need to give older children the chance and opportunity to ask for what they want. Sometimes we need to ignore shrugs and grunts and expect them to articulate their wishes. This is the basis of civil behaviour, as well as a basic human skill.

2 Sharing: Sharing is a basic social skill. Developmentally, very young children like to keep their possessions to themselves. As they get older and move into Prep and beyond the notion of sharing becomes a pre-requisite for playing and forming relationships with others. Other children like to play and be with those who share their time, possessions and space with them. Sharing is the start of empathy as it shows sensitivity to other people’s feelings.

3 Holding a conversation: Holding conversations with others is a lifetime friendship skill. Conversations require self-disclosure, which can be challenging for some children. Good conversationalists give of themselves, but also take an interest in the person they are talking to. Many children forget that good conversations are two-way events, and tend to focus solely on themselves. Children within conversations need to learn to ask interesting questions; to take turns when speaking and to show you are listening by making eye contact and not interrupting.

From the Library

Each year, in celebration of Book Week and Literacy Week, Meerkat Productions adapt books shortlisted for the CBCA Picture Book of The Year Award. This year they have created two 40 minute musical productions including original songs and puppetry. On Monday the Prep - Year 4’s will attend the show based on ‘Mr Huff’ by Anna Walker and Years 4 - 6 will watch the production ‘Run Pip Run’ by J.C. Jones These interactive shows sound very exciting and help us begin our week of celebrations.

Book week will conclude with our annual Book Week Parade on the last day of term, so each class is busy discussing costumes to wear. Please check with teachers concerning themes and dress up requirements ready for the parade on Friday, all welcome to attend!

This week we are running a colouring competition in the library. Sheets are available at lunchtimes and winners will be announced next week.

Happy reading, Colleen Tonkes
