Rabbi’s Message:

Tefilah (prayer), Teshuvah (repentance) and Tzedakah (righteous giving) are three foundations upon which the High Holy Days stand. We should direct our intentions and our behaviors to maxim-ize all three. As I put fingers to keyboard, it is the end of August

and Rosh Hashanah seems far off; however, it is only 5 weeks away. During these weeks, focus on being a mensch (decent person). Reconcile with others and with your own issues and circumstances. Seek forgiveness from others and from God. Grant forgiveness to those who sincerely ask. Give your time and resources.

The month of Elul, begins Sunday, September 4. Elul is the month directly preced-ing Rosh Hashanah. During the month of Elul, we sound the shofar at the conclu-sion of services to remind us Rosh Hashanah is approaching and we should prepare ourselves spiritually. At our congregation, we have sounded the shofar during Elul for many years. However, the custom is much older than any stream of Juda-ism. This custom is found in Pirke de-Rabbi Eliezer, a collection of midrashim (interpretations) of Torah teachings from the 1st to 3rd centuries.

We will begin sounding the shofar, Friday, September 9 and at Sunday school and Hebrew school. If you have a shofar, bring it to services. And during Rosh Hasha-nah morning services, after the Torah reading, every one with a shofar is invited to join the loud cacophony which is our Shofar Choir.

Would you like to make a shofar? The Religious School students will make sho-farot at Sunday School on September 25 with Rabbi Yossi from the Living Legacy Foundation. Student shofarot will be free. For non-religious school students, a sho-far will be $18 to help us cover the cost of the program. Edna Akrish and I invite young and old to join us for this meaningful and significant program. We will prac-tice the shofar calls immediately after school that morning.

Why sound the shofar? The sound of the shofar reminds us to “wake up and smell the coffee.” Live a better, kinder, more charitable, more Jewish life. For some, the shofar awakens them if they fell asleep during the Torah service. That awakening is an easy one. The much more difficult, and challenging awakening, is to awaken from our tendency to be selfish and stubborn…our tendency to be narrow minded and petty…our tendency to see the world from our own perspectives and not be willing to see the world from the perspectives of those with whom we disa-gree. The November elections are upon us and we should consider being a little less strident and a little more soft spoken. Take a look in the mirror…we know this to be true.

And then we move into the month of Tishri when the Jewish New Year beckons us to do teshuvah…to return to our better selves and to God. Be a better friend, a bet-ter spouse, a better citizen, a better Jew, a better and more generous person, and a better descendant of Abraham and Sarah.

Choose to be a mensch. Consider becoming a mensch member of our congrega-tion. There were 16 of us last year. Please join us as we seek creative ways to at-tract donations to pay for our “tuition free” religious school. There was an article on page 16 of the Friday, August 26 Cleveland Jewish News, entitled “Temple Isra-el Ner Tamid banking of tuition-free schooling.” This link should take you directly to the CJN article: (http://www.clevelandjewishnews.com/news/local_news/temple-israel-ner-tamid-banking-on-tuition-free-schooling/article_5793a912-695d-11e6-927c-f7345c2cb027.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=email&utm_campaign=user-share). See page 11 for more details on TINT’s Mensch program.

Rabbi’s Message, continued from page 2 We have always helped members and others in need. We are a con-gregation in which acts of chesed and tzedakah are part and parcel of our mission. Now, we are taking a more proactive educational ap-proach to attract unaffiliated Jews, their children, grandchildren and friends. Universal Jewish education is an age old Jewish value. With our children, grandchildren, and others, we will strengthen the Jewish people, our country, Israel, and good people throughout the world. If we do not transmit Jewish values, we will perish, as will the powerful force for goodness in the world which is the Jewish people, this coun-try, and the land and people of Israel. In parashat Ekev (Deuteronomy 8:16, Hertz Chumash page 784), the Torah teaches God gave us manna from heaven. There is a mystical illustration and illumination by The Maggid of Mezritch (1700-1772, Poland). He taught the manna was also a test. How can manna be a test? The manna was the daily sustenance of the people. It appeared every day and nourished the Israelites as they traipsed through the desert. The manna revealed two spiritual obstacles, and thus two spiritual tests. First was a test of poverty. When our ancestors did not have enough, they worried “where will tomorrow’s manna would come from?” Some were comforted by a strong faith in God, others grew impatient and became negative-minded. The second was a test of affluence. When our ancestors had enough, and more than enough, they grew haughty, felt superior and then took their gifts for granted. With their daily manna would they remain grateful or become posses-sive and selfish? Which is more difficult? To be thankful in the lean years or grateful in the years of plenty? As your rabbi, I do not have your answer. You have your answer. Or at the very least, you should be working on your answer, as we enter this holy season. We should reconcile with others…and we should reconcile with our-selves. Come and listen to the sound of the shofar. Come and make a shofar so the “offering of your lips” will help awaken others. Do teshuvah…return to your better self, return to your people, and return to God. As you enter the driveway, notice the FREE Tuition sign for religious school and tell your unaffiliated friends to bring their chil-dren and grandchildren. Become a Mensch Member and actively help us educate this generation, and future generations, of Jews. You will be engaging in acts of chesed (kindness) and tzedakah. You will be doing a mitzvah of tremendous significance. Help others, it will be a powerfully positive path as you struggle with the ques-tions: Will I be thankful and generous in the lean years? Will I be grateful and generous in the years of plenty? L'shannah Tovah. Pat and I send our warm wishes to you, and yours, for health, happiness, prosperity and God’s blessings in the New Year 5777.

High Holy Days 5777

• Erev Rosh Hashanah ·················· Sunday, October 2 ··········· 7:30 p.m. • Rosh Hashanah ························· Monday, October 3 ········· 10:00 a.m.

• Children’s Services* ··············· ·······································2:30 p.m. • Erev Yom Kippur (Kol Nidre) ······· Tuesday, October 11 ········ 7:30 p.m. • Yom Kippur ······························· Wednesday, October 12 ·· 10:00 a.m.

• Children’s Services* ··············· ·······································2:30 p.m. • Yizkor and Ne’ilah* ················· ·······································4:30 p.m.

It’s time again to gather together as a congregation, and prepare ourselves for the new year ahead. By now you will have received letters explaining High Holy Day services, tickets, and our Book of Remembrance for Yom Kippur.

Tickets will be sent to families who have paid their 2015-2016 fiscal year dues in full. Additional tickets may be requested for immediate members (spouse, child or parent) of your family for $90.00. For non-member or non-immediate family (aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents), tickets are $180.00 each.

Admission will be by ticket, *except for Children’s, Yizkor and Ne’ilah services. College students and military personnel with I.D. do not need tickets. Share A Ride. We have members of our congregation who cannot easily drive, or cannot drive at all. (1) Would you be willing to give someone a ride for services? Call the Rabbi to let him know. This would be a beautiful act of g’mi’lut chassadim, an act of loving kindness. (2) Do you need a ride? The Rabbi will try to make a match. Shofar Choir. Rosh Hashanah morning, the call of the shofar awakens us from our spiritual slumber. The shofar wails, “Wake up, change your ways, become a better Jew, become a better person!” This fall, the Holy Days arrive later and give us time to ready our lips. We will have three brief Shofar Choir rehearsals. After Religious School on Sundays, September 11, 18, and 25, from 12:00-12:20 p.m. Please call the Rabbi (440 473 5120) to RSVP and let 5777 be the year with our loudest ever shofar choir. No prior experience is necessary, just BYOS - bring your own shofar.

Tzedakah is a Jewish imperative. On Yom Kippur morning, we hear the words of Isaiah 58, “Share your bread with the hungry.” (1) On Rosh Hashanah, we will distribute empty bags. On Yom Kippur, please bring your bags filled with non-perishables. We distribute them through the Jewish Family Service Association (JFSA). This is a “teachable moment” for your children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Take them with you for “tzedakah shopping.” Let them help to fill the bag. (2) During this time of “spiritual renewal” make a generous donation to the “TINT Tzedakah Fund” to support our congregation’s monthly tzedakah at the St. Aloysius Hunger Center in Glenville. The Tzedakah Fund also allows us to engage in many and various tzedakah opportunities. The wood tzedakah box is on the prayerbook shelf as you enter the Sanctuary.

Babysitting. Jan Tucker, an experienced TINT Religious School teacher and sitter, will be in bridal room of our building which allows easy access to parents. Age: preschoolers and up. Time: from 1/2 hour before, until after services. Donation: $5 per child per service. Activities? Yes. Snack? Yes, animal crackers and juice. Reservations would be helpful, but are not required. Please call the temple office. On Rosh Hashanah morning, Jan will make sure all the kids are brought into the Sanctuary for the shofar service. Do you have a college student? Please send Marcie Oelbracht the address and email address to [email protected]. Please put “College Address” in the subject line. They may be away from home, but they are in our hearts.

From Our Education Director

By Edna Akrish, BJS, MSM

Shalom to all!

It is hard to believe that summer is almost over...I hope that you and your family had a great time!

I am thrilled to be back in Cleveland after a most interesting journey to Israel, Italy and Slovenia. How rewarding it is to witness where and how the Jewish people lived - hundreds of years ago, enriching the life of their community and those living with them.

Here at TINT Religious school we are busy to plan a most amazing and productive year for our students! Based on the feedback we received from our teachers, students, parents and colleagues - our transformation of "learning by doing" in a range of topics - proved to be most successful!

This up coming year we plan to continue and infuse our curriculum with even more "hands on" activities, workshops, trips, lectures, community projects - to enhance the meaningful meaning and increase our connection to our incredible culture and Jewish faith.

As we look forward to educate our children, led by our esteemed Rabbi and dedicated teachers, we also want to invite you to share with us some of our experiences.

Please note that on Sep. 25th, adults will be welcome to join us for the " Shofar" workshop! How wonderful it will be to have your own family Shofar or to gift it to others - just in time for Rosh Ha'Shanna! Please stay tuned, as more information will come your way prior to this event.

We are so happy to welcome a " shin shin" ( emissary) from Israel, Itamar Maromi, who will join us every other Sunday and on Wednesdays, to bring the sounds, flavors and current events of Israel. Itamar will also be involved in our " Teen club". Say "Shalom" to Itamar when you'll meet him in school.

From the President’s Desk

As the new year is rapidly approaching it is a good time for us to think about our personal commitment to Temple Israel Ner Tamid. We will have opportunities to pray, learn, socialize and share with others within our congregation and with the community at large. These four areas have best identified us as the congregation we have chosen to be. We need to use this High Holiday season as an opportunity to consider the role we would want to play within our congregation. Now is a great time to approach Rabbi Matt, Marcie, our Temple Administrator, a member of the board, or myself with your commitment of personal support. There is much to do and your talents could be put to good use. You could join one of our standing committees, put forth your own ideas, attend one of our many functions or join us to participate in one of our many tzedakah activities that are conducted regularly. You are not only welcome, but needed! Your time and efforts would be greatly appreciated. We have many upcoming activities, so it should not be too difficult to find one that fits your schedule and inter-ests. Here are a few ways to get involved: • Attend Shabbat Services on Friday evenings at 7:30

• Serve dinner at St. Al’s on the fourth Tuesday of each month

• Make P,B & J sandwiches each Friday at the Oneg

• Attend Adult Education presentations on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m.

Speaker Series to Feature

Author Shulem Deen

By Marv Gisser, Event Chairman

Hero or Heretic?

Shulem Deen, winner of a 2015 National Jewish Book Award for his book, "All Who Go Do Not Return," described as "one man's struggle toward intellectual integrity," will be the seventh speaker in the Temple's Annual Speaker Series on Sunday, October 30 at 7 p.m.

Mr. Deen was a member of the Skverers – one of the most insular Hasidic sects in the U.S. He knew little of the outside world, only that it should be shunned. Until he turned on a radio! Curiosity then led him to the library and ultimately to the internet.

He learned there was another world out there. As a result, over a period of years the loss of his faith and religious beliefs caused him to do something simple and radical - to live in accordance with his own beliefs, not those imposed on him by the thinking of an ingrained Hasidic sect.

Temple members who have read "All Who Go Do Not Return," have come away with emotions, ranging from "sad" to "mad."

Mr. Deen is not the only one who has left the strict orthodoxy of Hasidic sects and he serves on the board of Footsteps, an organization that offers assistance and support to those who have left the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community.

General admission tickets are $36 for the lecture. Author Meet-and-Greet tickets for a 5:30-6-30 p.m. reception are $180. (Meet-and-Greet participants receive two tickets and a copy of Mr. Deen's book.) Current students and members of the military free with a valid ID. Send your check to the Temple office, or call 440-473-5120 to charge them.

Have You Seen Our New Chairs? This year’s High Holy Day services will be a bit more comfortable: our new Sanctuary chairs have arrived! Thanks to fundraising efforts during last year’s Rock & Roll Gala and our current Capital Campaign, we took the first steps in updating our facilities with attractive (and plumper!) chairs.

Make 5777 the Year You Become a TINT Mensch

Member!

Like you, TINT works hard to stretch our budget to meet increas-ing costs of utilities, maintenance, healthcare for our paid employees (2), religious school registration and emergency repairs. And, since we are not charging for Religious School tuition, it also have to cover teacher and supply costs. One way you can do a mitzvah (most likely a tax-deductible one) is to become a Mensch Member of our congregation. A Mensch goes over and above what is expected of the average per-son for the good of others. In this case, it means making a one-time or monthly payment over and above your regular dues commit-ment. We are fortunate to have sev-eral people who have stepped up and become Mensch Members. But we need more.

Mensch: $613 over and above your dues.

Silver Mensch: $1,800 over dues.

Gold Mensch: $3,600 over dues.

Your gift will go to reduce our debt and pay for operating costs, mainte-nance and improvements.

Mensch donors will re recognized in the bimonthly Israelight, and, if you’re lucky, Rabbi Matt will give you one of his blue “Be a Mensch” baseball caps!

Golf Marathon Success!

Thanks to our intrepid golfers, able support staff, and very generous donors, TINT raised about $27,000 in donations and pledges for our 9th annual 100-Hole Golf Marathon. Rabbi Matt, having just returned from his travels in Alaska, led the somewhat soggy play out at Legend Lakes Coun-try Club. Kudos to chairman Steve Newman and TINT Administrator Marcie Oelbracht for

taking care of all the organizational details.
