What do you like about our school and what could we do to make our school even better? As we enter a new school planning cycle (2021-2024), your feedback will be of great value to us as we undertake a broad school evaluation. The current restrictions will mean a virtual launch for this year’s program. While we are hoping for opportunity to engage face- to-face with students at some point in term 4, a virtual program will provide students with an initial introduction to the school. Further details will be released shortly. Road Safety Yesterday a parent reported a near miss on Floraville Rd, where a student was nearly struck by a car. Today I have been liaising with NSW Police and a Department of Education Health and Safety advisor to review our road safety procedures. While road safety is included in the school’s curriculum, additional learning will be provided at this time. Could I also ask parents and carers to review road safety with their child/ren at home. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our students. Public Speaking On Friday I had the pleasure of attending the Stage 1 public speaking finals. Students across the school have done a terrific job planning and preparing their speeches, and Friday’s final included high-quality presentations. Within the classroom, we have refined our practices for feedback this year so that each student receives feedback from their peers. While this has supported students in reflecting on their own speeches, it has also contributed to a greater understanding of the criteria for what makes a good speech. I look forward to hearing speeches at the Stage 2 final this afternoon. School Survey: Now Live

Now is the time for you to have your say about Floraville Public School. What do you like about our school and what could we do to make our school even better? As we enter a new school planning cycle (2021-2024), your feedback will be of great value to us as we undertake a broad school evaluation. Kindergarten Orientation

Our kindergarten team are busy planning a modified orientation program for our 2021 kindergarten students. The current restrictions will mean a virtual launch for this year’s program. While we are hoping for opportunity to engage face-to-face with students at some point in term 4, a virtual program will provide students with an initial introduction to the school. Further details will be released shortly.

Road Safety

Yesterday a parent reported a near miss on Floraville Rd, where a student was nearly struck by a car.

Public Speaking

On Friday I had the pleasure of attending the Stage 1 public speaking finals.

LIBRARY NEWS

Book Week

It’s only 3 weeks until our Book Week celebrations on Wednesday 23rd September (last week of term). Are you struggling for ideas? Check out the links to some DIY costumes.

https://www.simplifycreateinspire.com/book-week-costume-ideas/

https://www.mumsnet.com/entertainment/world-book-day-last-minute-costumes

https://craftilifia.com/21-diy-book-week-costumes/

Don’t forget you can also take inspiration from this year’s theme; ‘Curious Creatures, Wild Minds’.

Unfortunately, we won’t be able to have visitors but we will definitely be filming students and making this available to our school community.

Our canteen will also be having a special Book Week themed lunch special. Keep an eye out next week for more details.

Book Fair

As part of our Book Week celebrations, we will also be holding a book fair on Wednesday 23rd September. Due to current COVID restrictions, we will be unable to have parents/grandparents/friends visiting the book fair. Also, we won’t be able to accept any cash payments for items. All purchases will need to be paid for online prior to the day.

How will this work?

Students will be given the opportunity to create a wish list while previewing the book fair on the Friday or Monday prior to Book Week.

Students bring this wish list home to discuss the possibility of purchasing any of the items.

Payments will need to be made via the website www.scholastic.com.au

Record of the payment will need to be recorded on the back of the wish list, including the receipt number and amount paid.

Students bring this record to the book fair and purchase items using this record of payment.

A virtual viewing of the book fair will also be created for you to view from home.

Although this new format for a Book Fair isn’t ideal, we will just make the best of an unprecedented situation.

OTHER NEWS

We LOVE reading!

Friday 14th was a long morning for some lucky Floraville students as they eagerly awaited their first session of Buddy Reading. It was a great success thanks to Miss O’Friel’s organisation and alignment of Kindy students with Year 5 buddies. The younger students were completely engaged as they listened to a story and then got to practise their newly-acquired reading skills. The Year Five students had their first taste of what it will be like to be an older buddy for Kinder 2021 students. While the latest COVID19 requirements have meant a hold to buddy reading for now, hopefully it’s not too long before we can schedule our next session. We can’t wait!

ICAS External Assessments

Today, selected students sat the ICAS Spelling Bee assessment. The Mathematics Assessment will take place tomorrow.

Swim School 2020 Cancelation

Unfortunately, the Swim Scheme program that is targeted to our Year 2 students is cancelled for 2020. COVID-19 restrictions in place by the Department of Education, NSW Health and the swim scheme providers will not allow for this type of school activity to take place. We will take this into consideration when planning for Swim Scheme in 2021.

STAGE 1 PUBLIC SPEAKING FINALS

On Friday, Year 1 and Year 2 classes had one grade representative from each class participate in the Stage 1 Public Speaking grade finals.

Congratulations to all students for participating in the speech writing and presenting process, and a special mention to all of the class representatives for delivering outstanding speeches to their stage cohort. Normally parents are invited to attend however, sadly, this was not possible under current Department of Education restrictions. Mr Mulready, Stage 1 teachers and their peers made sure they were properly acknowledged and proud of their achievement.

VIRTUAL DEBATING COMPETITION

On Tuesday, our Floraville debating team participated in the first round of the inter-schools debating competition against Pelican Flat PS. Due to current restrictions, the debating day was conducted online via Zoom technology that connected us to the students at Pelican Flat. We came away with one win and one loss. Thank you to Mrs Adams for adjudicating and sharing her feedback with both schools. All students enjoyed the day and adjusted well to the virtual experience.
