We believe that this opportunity will be particularly beneficial to Brooklyn Tech students, as it provides both hands-on exposure to state-of-the-art hydroponic farming technology and an opportunity to engage in a community advocacy project in Brooklyn. It is a volunteer opportunity that provides students with internship-level leadership training and community outreach experience. We would very much appreciate it if you could make this unique opportunity known to your student body. For your convenience, I've attached a program flyer to this e-mail. (SEE BELOW) The direct link to our volunteer application page is http://www.studentsforservice.org/volunteer/why- teens-for-food-justice/ . Please note that new volunteers are welcomed to the team on a rolling basis until spots have been filled, so applying early is encouraged. About Teens for Food Justice: Designed to inspire innovative thinking and civic leadership skills in teens, Teens for Food Justice brings together a team of high-school students from throughout NYC to build and maintain an indoor hydroponic farm that grows produce for a school community in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Volunteers meet one Saturday per month to collaborate with professionals in urban agriculture, sustainability, nutrition and food justice advocacy, designing & leading community outreach that empowers food-insecure families to take charge of their health. Participation for a full school year earns students over 50 hours of community service credit, for which proof of hours letter is provided. Why volunteers commit: Students often enter the program seeking community service hours, or with an interest in a particular aspect of our work, but they emerge with a well-rounded understanding of food justice issues and sustainable practices, and with a set of problem-solving tools, leadership skills and confidence in their own effectiveness as future social change activists. Nearly 100% of non-graduating students who volunteered with us last year have chosen to continue for a second year of service, and all graduates attending college locally have transitioned into leadership roles as young adult mentors on our team.

Greetings, I’m reaching out on behalf of Katherine Soll, Director of Students for Service, to extend a special invitation to your students to volunteer with Teens for Food Justice, our service learning initiative through which teens work together to increase healthy food access and fight for food justice in underserved communities. About Teens for Food Justice:

Designed to inspire innovative thinking and civic leadership skills in teens, Teens for Food Justice brings together a team of high-school students from throughout NYC to build and maintain an indoor hydroponic farm that grows produce for a school community in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

Why volunteers commit:

Students often enter the program seeking community service hours, or with an interest in a particular aspect of our work, but they emerge with a well-rounded understanding of food justice issues and sustainable practices, and with a set of problem-solving tools, leadership skills and confidence in their own effectiveness as future social change activists.

Nearly 100% of non-graduating students who volunteered with us last year have chosen to continue for a second year of service, and all graduates attending college locally have transitioned into leadership roles as young adult mentors on our team.

“One of the great aspects of this project is that it incorporates your input at every step of the way, and always makes sure you are involved and have something to do…You are not just a volunteer who shows up to help out every so often, you are connected and invested deeply in the project for a long period of time.” – Sophia, Teen Volunteer

Feel free to reach out with any additional questions.

Best wishes, Rosa Ammon-Ciaglo Manager of Programs, Outreach & Engagement Students for Service Www.studentsforservice.org
