Teen Drama

• Teen Drama is a sub-genre of Drama, they can be linked into other dramas as well. For example, horrors, thrillers and sitcoms.

• Teen Dramas were first introduced in the early 1990’s as television shows. These shows were based around problems and situations teens face. For example, school life, relationships, friendships, alcohol and drugs etc.

Characters

• Each character in a teen drama have similarities and differences. This is because being a teenager is when you start discovering who you are and how you choose to represent yourself.

• Usually teenagers struggle with trying to fit in with different social groups. These usually consist of the ‘sporty teens’ and ‘’jocks’, ‘the popular teens’, ‘the emos’ , ‘socially awkward teens’ etc.

Iconography

• There are a few visual elements that can be recognisable within the genre Such as, the school building, alcohol, parties, books, latest fashion and technology. Usually they would have posters of iconic celebrities and musicians, representing the characters interests.

• For iconic audio elements, the sound of the school bell going off, house and indie music, chart music, ringtones, and dialogue.

Style• In teen dramas, the common camera shots are medium to

close ups for when the character is talking. And a extreme long shot is used to set the scene or show a group of friends The lighting is usually natural lighting, and usually ambient lighting. Expressive lighting is used to create a dark and intense mood. (We would use this in our film)

• They usually only use straight cuts to keep the continuity of the film going. With sound they would use diegetic sounds that came from the shot it is rare that they would use Foley sounds. The soundtrack is usually pop music and house music as this is what teenagers listen to.
