Applying the Know-Want to Know-Learn Plus (KWL) in a Social Psychology Reading

KWL is the acronym for Know, Want to Know and Learn, the Plus is referred to an extra wrap-up phase. This technique is useful in reading activities because it embraces all the key aspect for an excellent reading instruction.

Method

1.- Colleges of the subject Social Psychology must create a table with three columns in the way that is presented below:

What I know What I want to learn

What I learned

They will be asked to bring their tables for next class.

2.- Professor will tell the students to write down in the first line of the column the word Locus of Control as the theme.

3.- Professor will open a brief brainstorming asking to the participants of the class to write down, in the first column of their worksheet, definitions of locus of control and ideas related with it.

4.- Teacher will show a power point presentation with the key aspects of locus of control. Afterwards he will ask to his students: Why it is important to you to know about this issue? and What do you want to learn about it? Students must include their answers in the second column of the table.

5.- Professor will provide to students the article “The Social Learning Theory of Julian B. Rotter” and he will request them to write in the third column of the table all their new knowledge.

6.- To finish the activity the professor will paste on the whiteboard 3 or 4 sheets of paper and will invite students to answer the question How can you apply Locus of Control in the solution of a social problem? Then will be a feedback activity and the class will be finished.
