STATEMENTOFPURPOSE This Applied Technology one-semester course enables students to use the design method to invent solutions to real world technological problems, in alignment with Next Generation Science Standards and the national focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). The course provides students with these interdisciplinary skills: problem-solving, design, creative thinking, systems thinking, team-work, documentation, and computer applications. Students will identify problems, do Internet research, design and fabricate models or prototype solutions; projects include, but are not limited to, bridge-building, solar cars, airplanes. Students will learn which other Applied Tech courses they might pursue, and focus on career opportunities for the 21st century.

This course is aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Technology Education, Engineering, Design, Computational Thinking

-Programming and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for Technology along with Career & Technical Education Content area: 21st

Century Life and Careers.

THELIVINGCURRICULUM

Curriculum guides are designed to be working documents. Teachers are encouraged to make notes in the margins. Written comments can serve as the basis for future revisions. In addition, the teachers and administrators are invited to discuss elements of the guides as implemented in the classroom and to work collaboratively to develop recommendations for curriculum reforms as needed.

GENERALGOALS Students will:

1. produce two- and three-dimensional drawings to ANSI standards. Types of drawings will include mechanical parts, maps, electronics and architectural plans.

2. learn about the geometry used in drafting by producing drawings of line, angles, arcs, circles and polygons and their interaction with each other.

3. produce freehand sketches of objects.

4. use the design process to solve an engineering problem.

5. study the careers associated with the drafting industry.

6. learn the proper use, maintenance and safety of desktop computers and CAD software.

7. create virtual solid models that will be 3D printed to produce a prototype part

You are working as a CAD operator for a small tool design company. Working with the Design and Engineering Department, you will produce multi-view drawings of a prototype part that the Design and Engineering Department designed. You will then produce a multi-view drawing of a given mechanical part that can then be sent to a machine shop to be manufactured.

Tasks

1. Decide which views are necessary in order to manufacture the part from your drawing.

2. Complete the drawing as per ASI standards.
