You can often detect the meaning of a word by reading it in context, that is, by reading the other words around it in a piece of text. Find the page and the article in TPP and then detect the word that solves the clue to its meaning. The number of letters and the starting letter of the solution are in brackets after each clue.

Did you know about Europe?

Europe Day is celebrated on May 9, each year. There are 51 countries

in Europe and 28 of them make up the European Union (EU). The EU

was founded in 1958 and was called the European Economic

Community (EEC) at that time. The EU members allow people from

other member states to live in their countries. They also trade freely

with other EU members. Nineteen of the EU countries, including

Ireland, use the Euro as their currency. In the next few years the UK

will become the first member to leave the EU since it was founded.

Aviation Takes Off (This is an extract from an article first published in the May 2014 edition of TPP.)

Air travel as we know it has come a long way since the first successfull aeroplane was invented and flown by

the Wright brothers of Ohio in 1903. Orville and Wilbur Wright credited their interest in aviation to a toy

helicoptor given to them by their father when they were children The two boys played with the toy until it

broke and then made one of their own.

Inspired by Otto Lilienthal, (known as the Glider King of germany), the brothers initially worked on glider

desings, before turning their efforts to powered aircraft. not satisfied with the results they acheived with

gliders, the brothers constructed their own wind tunnel and did hundreds of experiments to measure the

forces of drag and lift While other aviators of the time didn’t seem to worry about safety and control, these

were the Wright brothers’ main concerns, and were a big influence on their designs.

The Wrights made the first powred, controlled, heavier than air, manned flight on December 17, 1903 at Kill

Devil Hills, near Kittyhawk, in North Carolina. The first flight was made by orville and he flew a distence of 36

metres in 12 seconds Later on the same day, Wilbur Wright flew 260 metres in 59 seconds. After hundreds of

years of trying, man had, at last, learnt to fly, and the advances that followed over the next few years were all

based on these first flights by the Wright brothers.

Aeroplanes were quickly adopted by the militery for use in combat, and played a major role in both World

Wars Better design and technological advances soon led to sleeker, faster planes and before long, pilots were

competeing with one another for cash prizes which were given for distance and speed records.

The first non-stop transatlantic aeroplain flight, from Newfoundland to clifden in County Galway on 14th June

1919, won its pilots, Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur brown, a prize of $65,000 There are two

monumints in County Galway near the site where the Vickers Vimy bomber plane landed after less than

fifteen hours of flying and the pilots gave their first interview to the Connacht Tribune newspaper.
