Laser Pen and Mirror apparatus.

The Slinky Spring Alternate construction, using three Lego bricks instead of the swivel clip.

Apply the mirror AFTER the pen is in place. Electrical tape can also be used to hold the balloon on the cup more securely.

Transcript: Introduction Okay,supposeyouhavetwomarchingbands .OneofthemisfromStan-ford,andthey’rewearingalldifferentcolors,andthey’retryingtomarchacrossthefield,butthey’regoingeverydifferentdirection .Sooneguygoesthatway,andaguygoesthatway,andthisone’sgoingaroundincircles,anotheronegoesupthere .SothisistheStanfordBand .Andlet’smakethembealldifferentcolors .Sothey’rezoomingaround,variouscolors .HaveyoueverseentheStanfordBand?Yeah,they’refunny .Theyjustgocrazy .

Andthenlet’ssupposethere’ssomeotherband,andthey’realldressedinred .Andtheymarchinstraightlines,andtheymarchallthewayinstep,allatthesamedistancefromeachother .ThisisPodunkUniversity .

Thoserepresenttwothingsthatdealwithlight .Whatdoyouthinkoneofthemmightbe?[Students offer suggestions.]

Thisonerepresentsalaserbeam[indicates Podunk] .Alaserbeamhasallthesamecolor,theyallmarchperfectlytogetherinlines,andthey’reallinstepwitheachother .Regularoldwhitelightisamixtureofawholebunchofdifferentcolors,anditshootsoffallovertheplace .

Todaywe’regoingtobeusinglaserbeams .You’veallseenlaserpensbefore,andit’skindofneatthatthedotsstaysmall .Whenyoushinearegularflashlight,thedotgetsbiggerandbigger .Soifallthemarchersaremarchingperfectlyinstepwitheachother,theydon’tbangintoeachother,andtheycanstayinanicetightformation .Ifthey’realldifferentfrequencies,theenergiesinteractwitheachotherandtheyspreadoutallovertheplace .

Therearesomehazards:Youdon’twanttostaredirectlyintothelaserbeamorshineitintoyoureye .WhenIwasbuyingsomeoftheseatthestore,theguysaid,“Oh,theseareharmless .Theywon’tdoanythingtoyou .Yeah,see?”Andheshineditinhiseye .AndIsaid,“Whoa,didn’tthathurt?”Hesaid,“Well,Idoseethisgreendot .EverywhereIlookthere’sagreendot .”Soyoudon’twanttostareintoitandgetgreendots .

So,youcanshineitatyourskin,anditdoesn’tdoanythingtoyou .Youcanshineitatyourbodyandstuff,butyoudon’twanttoshineitdirectlyintoyoureyes .Ifitgoesflashy-flashyacrossyourface,thatdoesn’tdoanythingtoyou .Youjusthavetolookintoitforafewsecondstodoanyharm .

Let’ssupposethatEvilMisterFredisgoingtotakeovertheentireearth .Andhe’smakingplanstotakeovertheearth .Sohe’scalledtogethereverybodywho’sgoingtohelphiminhiscastle .Andthepeopleandthecreaturesthatcametohiscastledidn’tlikeitintherebecauseit’ssodark .Andtheysaid,“You’vegottomakesomewindows .”SoEvilMisterFredtoldhisminionstoputsomewindowsinthecastle .

Andtheminionsonlyhaveonetoolthattheycanuse,andthat’stheirbaseballbats .Sotheminionswentoutthereandstartedbangingonthecastle .Somewereinsidestandingontheladdersandstairsthatwentup .Andtheykeptbanging,banging,banging .Butthecastle’smadeoutofrock,andalltheydidwasweardowntheirbaseballbats .Andtheywerereallygoingatit,theywerehavingagreattime .Theydon’tusuallygettobangonthecastle .Andtheyworealltheirbaseballbatsdowntolittlenubs .Therewaslikeahandleandalittlenubonit .Andtheycouldn’tbreakthroughtherock .Andtheysaid,“EvilMisterFred,weneedmorebaseballbats .We’verunout .”

Sohedidsomethinghedoesn’tordinarilydo .Hegavehisminionshammers .Andtheminionssaid,“Oh,boy,boss--hammers!Welovehammers!”Andtheyweregoingtogohammereachother,andhesaid,“Now,now,youdon’thammereachother .Youmakewindowsinmycastle .”

Sotheminionssaid,“Oh,man .”Andtheystartedhammeringonthecastle,andsureenough,theybrokesomeholesintoit .Theyweren’tverygoodholes,buttheymadesomeholesinthecastle .AndEvilMisterFredhadtoactuallykeepaneyeonthemsothattheydidn’tknockthewholecastledown .

Sohesaid,“Okay,nowwe’reready .Wecanhaveourmeetingonhowtotakeovertheworld .”Buttheneverybodysaid,“Ohhhh,it’scoldinhere!You’vegottocoverupthewindows .”Hesaid,“Well,Ijustmadethewindows .Nowyou’retellingmetocoverupthewindows?”Theysaid,“Yeah,coverthemupwithsomethingwecanseethrough .”
