Teacher Notes - Class Organization/Rubrics for Assessment 1 © 2011 Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy Activity Summary: Students will be able to... Describe what the classroom rules are. Describe what they should keep in their engineering journal. Describe how their engineering journal will be assessed. Describe how the following rubrics will be used: Presentation Rubric Writing Criteria Rubric Project Proposal Assessment Robot Building Rubric Design Review Rubrics Central Concepts Introduction to classroom rules Introduction to how parts of the course will be graded Prerequisites A copy of the rubrics shown above that the teacher defines as important to share with the class. Approximate Class Time 3 days, students are responsible to complete all class work not completed in class for homework Note to the Teacher The beginning of the course is always the best time to establish the classroom rules. A robotics class has many parts and pieces that you will want the student to be responsible for. Make sure that you: Define where you want the kits to be stored at the end of the day. Define what cleanup looks like. Define when students are allowed to leave your class (after they have cleaned up their area or after the whole group is done cleaning up). Define what will happen if the classroom is not clean at the end of the period. Project based learning often means working in teams. The rubrics that are part of this lesson allows all members of the team to be responsible for keeping up their class notes and for documenting their teams project. Description of the Activity Students will learn what the teacher’s expectations are for students in this course; how they should behave, where they should put things, and how they will be evaluated. Students learn that they are required to keep an engineering journal where all of their class notes, programs, and drawings will reside. They will receive a set of rubrics that they can use to evaluate their work before they turn it in to the teacher.
