Note to the TeacherThebeginningofthecourseisalwaysthebesttimetoestablishtheclassroomrules.Aroboticsclasshasmanypartsandpiecesthatyouwillwantthestudenttoberesponsiblefor.Makesurethatyou:• Definewhereyouwantthekitstobestoredattheendoftheday.• Definewhatcleanuplookslike.• Definewhenstudentsareallowedtoleaveyourclass(aftertheyhavecleaneduptheir

areaorafterthewholegroupisdonecleaningup).• Definewhatwillhappeniftheclassroomisnotcleanattheendoftheperiod.

Projectbasedlearningoftenmeansworkinginteams.Therubricsthatarepartofthislessonallowsallmembersoftheteamtoberesponsibleforkeepinguptheirclassnotesandfordocumentingtheirteamsproject.

Description of the Activity Studentswilllearnwhattheteacher’sexpectationsareforstudentsinthiscourse;howtheyshouldbehave,wheretheyshouldputthings,andhowtheywillbeevaluated.Studentslearnthattheyarerequiredtokeepanengineeringjournalwherealloftheirclassnotes,programs,anddrawingswillreside.Theywillreceiveasetofrubricsthattheycanusetoevaluatetheirworkbeforetheyturnitintotheteacher.

Assessment Rubrics

Timelyassessmentisparamountintoday’seducationalenvironment.Aclearexpectationofwhatisbeingassessedisakeytotrainingstudents.Traditionalassessmentsareprovidedinthecurriculum;iequizzes.Theassessmentsfoundinthissectionareassessmentrubricsforproject-basedlearning.Therearemanyothertoolsthatateachermayuse,butthissectionprovidessomeexamples.Rubricsallowallstakeholderstoseewhatisbeingmeasured.

Writing Criteria Rubric-Writingisaprocessandgoodwritingrequiresseveralsteps:brainstorming,outlining,prewriting,andediting.Thisisasimplerubricthatcheckforthosesteps.

Engineering Journal Rubric-Explainstostudentswhatisexpectedintheirengineeringjournals.

Presentation Rubric-Helpsstudentsdeterminewhatagoodpresentationshouldinclude.

Request for Proposal Rubric-HelpsstudentstodeterminewhatisbeingevaluatedintheirRPFsubmission.

Work Habit Evaluation-Thisisagreattoolforstudentstousetodevelopstrongworkhabits.

Workplace Competencies Rubric-Thisrubrichelpsstudentstodeveloptheskillsthatarevaluedbyindustry.

Internal Design Rubric-Thisevaluationtoolhelpsstudentsunderstandtheexpectationsandpreparationneededforaninternaldesignreview.

External Design Review-Thisevaluationtoolhelpsstudentsunderstandtheexpectationsandpreparationneededforanexternaldesignreview.

Classroom ImplementationThereismorethanonewaytointroducethislessonset.Belowisonewaytoimplementthelesson.

1. Discussclassroomorganizationruleswithstudents.Wheredoyouwantrobotkitsstored,whoisresponsibleforcleanup,discusshowharditistokeepaprojectmovingforwardwithoutorganization.

2. Handoutthe“WorkHabitEvaluation”Rubricanddiscussitwiththeclass.Therubricmaybemodifiedtofityourclassesneeds.Ifyouprefer,youmaychoosetousethe“WorkplaceCompetenciesRubric”.Thekeyistomakestudentsresponsiblefortheirownbehavior.

3. Discuss“WhatisEngineering”.Useanexampleofamajorlocalprojectthatwouldtakeagroupofpeopletocompleteoveracoupleofyears.Askyourstudentshowtheteamworkingontheprojectwasabletomanagetheproject.Trytoleadthemtoananswerthatrequires“documentation”.

4. Givestudentsthehandoutthatdescribestheirengineeringjournal-“KeepingandEngineeringJournal”.5. Reviewtherubricthatwillbeusedtoevaluatethestudent’sengineeringjournal-“RubrictoEvaluatean

EngineeringJournal”.6. Havethestudentsprepareapresentationononeofthefollowingtopics: -Positiveworkhabits -Theimportanceoforganizationwhenworkingonacomplexproject -Ateacherselectedtheme7. Handoutthe“PresentationRubric”andusetherubrictoevaluatestudentpresentations.-Thismaybe

modifiedbaseontheamountoftimeyouhavetodedicatetoactivity.8. Discusstheotherrubricsthatwillbeusedforassessmentastheclassmovesforward.Note:Themostimportantpartsofthislessoninvolvetheclassroomorganizationrules,theworkhabitevaluationrules,andtheengineeringjournal.
