Principal’s Kōrero Kia ora koutou If you were unable to attend a hui this week please contact our office to reschedule. These hui are an opportunity for our tamariki, kura and whanau to support learning. For students in years 7-10 trajectory targets or te ara poutama would have been discussed. This korero is about supporting progress which will give our students the best chance of success for NCEA. Te ara poutama are our trajectory targets from which our tracking system identifies and tracks progress against. Maths, reading and writing progress and targets would have been discussed. I congratulate our learners who are meeting their targets. We will continue to support all our students to achieve their targets for the end of the year. Our senior students are making progress towards their prospective NCEA levels. This is definitely the time to be focused on their achievement. We have a wonderful staff who are here to support these students. For these senior students attendance is vital. Students who have attendance in excess of 90% give themselves every chance of success. One or two days at this time of year can have a significant impact. We need our students in every class, everyday. Thank you for your ongoing support of attendance. Lastly, I need to share the successes of Te Putahitanga our assisted learning centre. The learning progress being made is cause for celebration. These students are engaged in a range of meaningful and engaging learning programmes. I congratulate the staff, students and whanau for your collective efforts. Saturday was forecast to be not as good weather conditions. We all had an early start with our lesson at nine so up on the slope at 8.15am to get the gear sorted. It was still windy, and cold with limited visibility.

The snow chains were invaluable as all vehicles not carrying them were turned away from the Bruce Road at the bottom by the traffic controllers. With their confidence up, and their gear sorted early, students ripped straight into their lesson. The queues in Happy Valley built to ludicrous levels, and students discovered that when it snows while skiing it is not as pretty as you might think. Snow is cold and wet and stings you in the face. We left the mountain at 1.30 pm stopping at National Park to pick up the trailer and change into dry clothes. Otorohanga for dinner and arrived back at school at 10 pm.

Overall students were wonderful ambassadors had a great time benefiting greatly form the experience of visiting a World Heritage Park, and seeing the mountain at its best, then its worst.

Many thanks to the BOT for the student time released, and Garth for sorting the trailer. A special thanks to all those involved, Val, Brenda, Maaki, Clint, Elliot, Daisy and IHAD, SLT team and all teachers for encouraging students and lending gear. Too all Year 8 students this is one trip you don’t want to miss out on!

The Year 9 Ski and Snowboard trip departed on Thursday stopping for a late lunch at Bombay. We then headed onto Otorohanga for dinner and arrived at the accommodation in National Park at 7.30 pm. After a hot drink, students settled in to the 2 dorms for the night.

An early start was had on Friday, with clear skies and good conditions. A hearty breakfast was shared and lunches made. Then we headed up the mountain with 7 skiing and 3 snowboarding. It was a nice clear day once up the mountain above the cloud below. It was a lovely day for learning and Happy Valley was the place to be. The snow was great with good coverage and no ice. Students had their lesson at 10am and most could stop and turn. The students really impressed with their quick ability to master the basics and they were eager to get out on the slopes and play.

NZSTA National Conference

2019 Dunedin Over 900 trustees from around the country arrived in Dunedin to attend the national NZSTA conference over a period of four days. 41% of attendees were newly elected trustees who were beginning their journey into the world of school governance. Tikipunga High School attended with our board members to partake in the many workshops provided for governance training. Board members networked, connected and forged relationships with other board members in Tai Tokerau and throughout the country. We were one of only a few schools at the conference who had their student rep attend (Skyla Anderson-Wynn). Workshops and keynote speakers provided valuable information to our new members and the many discussions shared around education matters and requirements necessary to operate as an effective board. Conversations were held with other board members about how proud we are of our school, students, staff, whanau and community as we all work together to raise student achievement levels, embed school values, create pathways and celebrate student success. The conference allowed our board members to share valuable time together working and modelling our school values through whanaungatanga, tikanga, pono, manaakitanga and ako. The Board is excited and ready to support our students, staff, whanau and community in its role of school governance through our strategic goals of achieving, connecting and celebrating as a school community.

SCHOOL OF BEAUTY - Last Friday 5 students went with

Whaea Bron down to Evolution School of Beauty, to check out a what a beauty therapist occupation is all about. We got to meet the students and talk with them about the industry. We also had facials so they could practice and to show us what they had been learning. We were so relaxed that two of us even fell asleep! Apparently, that is a great compliment to the therapist. It was a great morning and really interesting to see what they have to do, and how much they need to know. We would be keen to go back sometime for another 'chat' & learn a bit more about what they do.

Last Thursday all the students from P.E and Recreation, through L1 - 3 met early at a cold and windy Denby Golf course. The reason for this earlier morning rendezvous, The Denby Golf Course Primary School Cross Country. This was Tikipunga High School's first year of running the event, and at the helm was Ellen Bratty and Kahu Yates-Roma with Brandy Henare in support for course design. This event was attended by over 360 local primary school pupils, including a number of our own and I cannot stress how much of a wonderful job they did. Well done! We were working with excellent support from Denby Golf Course, local primary schools (thank you Wiremu and Joel), Whangarei Athletics, Sport Northland and we cannot forget our sponsor PacknSave. Our students ran everything from the planning and inviting different schools, to course design, assigning of jobs, marshalling, handing out and writing certificates, attending of meetings with the primary schools and golf course to running activities to keep the primary school pupils entertained, pre race warm ups and a sausage sizzle. These are just a few of the jobs that our sports students undertook and is by no way the complete list. It was a really positive and fun day for all concerned, with our Levels 1s really taking on the spirit of the event, as they will be in charge of parts of the event next year. We had some great results with Eruera Fraser, Rythm Taua-Glassie, Peter Mathews Birchall, Jin Langman, Miriam Paki, Charlotte Leslie, Aamea Walding-King, Gus Van Den Bos, Sylance Paki, Matatini Swanson and Holly Schuster all earning a Golf membership for the year and the chance to run at the Barge Park event. Well done also to them.
