Q: I have inherited a Priscilla sewing machine, model 14A314. Can you tell me more about it and, perhaps, its value? -- Susan, Surprise, Ariz.
A: The Priscilla sewing machine was manufactured by the New Home Sewing Machine Company and sold mostly through department stores. Your machine was produced in about 1919. I contacted several collectors, who seem to agree that your ma-chine would retail in the $150 to $250 range.

A woman was arrested for shop lifting. When she went before the judge he asked her, “What did you steal?” She replied: “a can of peach-es.” The judge asked her why she had stolen them and she replied that she was hungry. The judge then asked her how many peaches were in the can. She replied 5. The judge then said, “I will give you 5 days in jail.”
Before the judge could actually pronounce the punishment the wom-an’s husband spoke up and asked the judge if he could say something. The judge said, “What is it?”
The husband said, “She also stole a can of peas.”

...continued from page 1Q: I have a Tom and Jerry comic, No. 65, which was published in
about 1949. Does it have any value? -- Tom, Des Moines, IowaA: I found your comic referenced in “The Standard Guide to
Golden Age Comics,” by Alex G. Malloy and Stuart W. Wells III. According to this guide, your comic was issued in July 1949 and is worth about $100. As with most collectibles, condition is ex-tremely important. For example, if your comic shows a great deal of wear, it could only be worth only $20 or so.

A: You paid about what the poster is worth. I found it referenced in “Warman’s Political Collectibles: Identification and Price Guide,” by Dr. Enoch L. Nappen and published by Krause Books. According to Dr. Nappen, your poster is valued in the $35 to $50 range.

2014 Pheasant brood survey indicates higher pheasant numbersPIERRE, S.D. -- The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks
(GFP) has completed the annual pheasant brood survey and the results show a 76 percent increase in the statewide pheasants-per-mile index from 2013.
From late July through mid-August, GFP surveyed 109, 30 mile-routes across the state to estimate pheasant production and calcu-late the pheasants-per-mile index. The survey is not a population estimate, but rather compares the number of pheasants observed on the routes and establishes trend information. Survey routes are grouped into 13 areas, based on a local city, and the index value of each local city area is then compared to index values of the previ-ous year and the 10-year average.
“With favorable weather conditions this past winter and spring, along with the availability of quality nesting habitat across the state, we are going to see an increase in this year’s pheasant popu-lation,” stated Jeff Vonk, GFP Secretary. “Survey results show pheasant numbers rebounded the strongest in central South Da-kota; especially in the Pierre, Chamberlain, Mobridge and Winner areas. Results also indicate that pheasant numbers are substantial-ly higher than 2013 throughout much of eastern South Dakota.”
The 2014 statewide pheasants-per-mile index of 2.68 is up from 1.52 in 2013. The statewide pheasant-per-mile index is similar to 2002 when hunters harvested 1.26 million roosters.
“Habitat is at the forefront of the conversation right now and is a crucial factor in pheasant numbers,” stated Vonk. “Bird num-bers are higher this year due to excellent reproduction in parts of the state where quality habitat conditions still exist, primarily on grasslands including those enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program as well as fields of cereal crops such as winter wheat. We continue to work in cooperation with the Governor’s Pheasant Habitat Workgroup, partner organizations and agencies, and land-owners to provide an improved future for habitat in our state.”
Public hunting opportunities are abundant in South Dakota. Over 1 million acres of publicly owned and private land leased through GFP’s Walk-In Area Program and the James River Wa-tershed Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program is available in the primary pheasant range of South Dakota. The 2014 public hunting atlas and a web-based interactive map of public lands and private lands leased for public hunting can be found online at http://gfp.sd.gov/hunting/areas.
