A company, feeling it was time for a shake-up, hires a new CEO. This new boss is determined to rid the company of all slackers.

On a tour of the facilities, the CEO notices a guy leaning on a wall. The room is full of workers and he thinks this is his chance to show everyone he means business!

The CEO, walks up the guy and asks "How much money do you make a week?"

Undaunted, the young fellow looks at him and replies, "I make $200.00 a week. Why?"

The CEO then hands the guy $200 in cash and screams "Here’s

a week’s pay, now GET OUT and don’t come back!" Feeling pretty good about his first firing, the CEO looks around

the room and asks "Anyone know what that slacker did here?" With an uncontrollable grin, one of the other workers mutters "That was the pizza delivery guy".

2nd Annual Spooktacular Vendor/Craft Show

October 25,2014 • 9:00 - 1:00Big Stone Community Center

Come down for some Spooktacular items and prices!

Memphis, Tenn.A: Early editions of “Leaves of Grass” have become popular

this summer, due in no small part to several excellent biographies of Whitman that have been published recently. It is interesting to note that when his masterpiece was first published, it was not successful. Only after he re-worked and expanded it several times did it find an audience and become an American classic.

A bookshop I think might be helpful and is knowledgeable about early Whitman is Bauman’s Rare Books, 535 Madison Ave., New York, NY 10022; 212-751-0011; www.BaumanRareBooks.com.

• • •Q: I have five vintage fountain pens that I would like to restore

and actually use. They originally belonged to my dad, who was an attorney, and they have a great deal of sentimental value to me. Can you recommend someone who can repair and restore my pens? -- Ken, Hartford, Conn.

A: The Fountain Pen Hospital has done exceptional fountain pen restoration work for many years. The addresses are 10 War-ren St., New York, NY 10007; [email protected]; and www.fountainpenhospital.com.

• • •Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail

to [email protected]. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor does he do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail.

• On Oct. 26, 1776, a month after being named a diplomatic agent, Benja-min Franklin sets sail from Philadelphia for France,

where he was to negotiate and secure a formal alliance and treaty. While Franklin’s personal achievements were celebrat-ed and feted in Paris, his treaty success was slow. The treaty wasn’t signed until 1778.

• On Oct. 25, 1881, Pablo Picasso, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, is born in Spain. Picasso’s body of work comprises more than 50,000 paintings, drawings, engrav-ings, sculptures and ceramics produced over 80 years until his death in 1973 at age 91.

• On Oct. 22, 1934, Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd is shot and killed by FBI agents in a cornfield in East Liverpool, Ohio. Floyd, who had been a hotly pursued fugitive for four years, used his last breath to proclaim his innocence.

• On Oct. 20, 1947, the House Un-American Activities Committee of the U.S. Congress opens its investigation into

communist infiltration of the American movie industry. Many Hollywood actors saw their careers destroyed over false alle-gations or when they protested having their political loyalties questioned.

• On Oct. 24, 1958, mystery writer Raymond Chandler starts working on his last novel, “The Poodle Springs Story,” but he would die before completing it. Chandler published only seven novels, among them his first novel, “The Big Sleep,” in 1939 and “The Long Goodbye” in 1953.

• On Oct. 21, 1967, some 100,000 anti-war demonstrators march on the Pentagon, headquarters of the U.S. military. Vio-lence erupted when the protesters clashed with soldiers and U.S. marshals protecting the building. By the time order was restored, 683 people had been arrested.

• On Oct. 23, 1983, a suicide bomber drives a truck filled with 2,000 pounds of explosives into a U.S. Marine Corps barracks at the Beirut International Airport. The explosion killed 220 Marines, 18 sailors and three soldiers. Four months after the bombing, American forces left Lebanon without retaliating.

NEW WATERTOWN LOCATION OPENING SOON

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Are Dogs Growing More Anxious?DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My small mixed-breed dog

“Tara” has terrible anxiety, especially when I leave the house or during thunderstorms. I have to either put a cone on her or socks on her paws so she doesn’t chew them bloody during these episodes. I hear from other friends that their dogs have anxiety issues as well. Is this problem on the rise? -- Sherri L, Kansas City, Mo.

DEAR SHERRI: Evidence isn’t clear that anxiety in dogs is rising, but there is a rise in the understanding and diagnosis of anxiety in pets by veterinarians. This has led to an increase in diagnosis and treatment for pet anxiety.

While that is good for pets, there is no “magic bullet” to quickly cure a dog of an anxiety disorder. Tara’s vet can diagnose the problem, and can help you determine differ-ent ways to treat her.

Medication can be a big help in easing anxiety symptoms, but you also want to look for causes of Tara’s anxiety, and trigger points that set off her paw-chewing. Thunderstorms are one trigger; your leaving the house is another.

There are a number of different techniques, both training or interaction, to turn off those triggers. While there’s not room in this column to list them, do some quick research and look for dog training manuals that stress positive re-inforcement. Ask the vet and your friends about local dog trainers or specialists who treat pet anxiety issues.

In evaluating such professionals, ask what therapies they use or are open to, and make sure they emphasize your role in working with Tara (owners have to put in the time with their dogs). Be circumspect about pet therapists who insist they have a single, one-size-fits-all solution for anxiety.

A group of Alabama friends went deer hunting and paired off in twos for the day. That night, one of the hunters returned alone, staggering under the weight of an eight-point buck. 'Where's Henry?' the others asked.

'Henry had a stroke of some kind. He's a couple of miles back up the trail,' the successful hunter replied.

'You left Henry laying out there and carried the deer back?' they inquired.

'A tough call,' nodded the hunter. 'But I figured no one is going to steal Henry!'

Sven and Olie are out in their turkey blind and a huge gobbler struts by. Sven raises his shotgun to blast the bird and Olie says "Don't bother, you forgot to load your gun"

Sven Replies "I don't have time to load my gun, if I wait any longer the turkey will be gone".

• Confectioner Milton Hershey suffered through founding two candy companies that ended in failure, then succeeded on his third attempt, and finally sold that company and used the proceeds to found the Her-shey Company. After all his hard work, though, he seemed to be less interested in enjoying the fruits of his labors than in helping others. In 1909 he established the Hershey Industrial School for Orphaned Boys, and 10 years later he donated control of the company to a trust for the school. Today the institution is called the Milton Hershey School, and it continues to have a controlling interest in the candy company.

When my son was going off to kindergarten for the first

time, I could tell he was curious about whether he would make new friends. So to comfort him, I slipped into his lunchbox a photograph of our family vacation in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area near Cana-da, where we hiked, ca-

noed and tried to catch fish. The teacher later told me that when he opened his lunchbox, he broke into a huge smile and started telling everyone about his adventures. Presto! New friends!

My kids are getting older now, but I occasionally think up some surprise that can pick up their day. These special attention-getters for different ages are sure to make lunch-time a highlight of the day:

For younger kids, tape a photo from a summertime activ-ity to the inside of your child’s lunchbox lid. A photo of family, pets and friends can remind them they aren’t alone and provide a conversation starter at lunchtime.

For older kids, cut out a favorite comic strip or cartoon from the Sunday newspaper, write a joke or riddle on a small piece of paper, or write short, thoughtful notes such as “Good luck on your spelling test,” “I’m looking forward to your birthday party this weekend” or “I love you.” Tuck it in the lunchbox between an orange and a peanut butter sandwich.

For cool teens, leave notes that no one but them will ever know about! Write “Good Luck!” on a banana or orange with a non-toxic marker, and once they get the message,

Lunchbox and Snack Surprisesthey can just peel it away -- quickly!

After school, serve your hungry young kids a healthy “apple puzzle” snack. They’ll love this simple game. First, with a sharp, pointed knife, cut an apple around its circum-ference in zigzag fashion. The point of the knife should reach all the way to the core. When you have cut all the way around the apple, take it apart. Give the two pieces to your child and challenge him to put it back together again.

• Here’s a fun game to help kids learn their sight words: BINGO! Make your own bin-go cards with sight words in

all the spaces. Use flash cards to call out the words, and the kids can mark them off as they hear them. We tape the bingo card to a small magnetic dry erase board, and the kids use refrigerator magnets to cover the words. We can use the boards over and over, really reinforcing the lesson. And it’s fun! -- A.J. in Florida

• Glass and chrome will shine if you clean them with newspaper. You can mist the paper with water first, but not too much. Rub … and the shine comes right out, plus no streaks or lint!

• Use purified water in your coffeemaker to lengthen its life. Water deposits build up and affect both the flavor and function of your machine. They can be cleaned, but it’s much better if you use purified drinking water from a jug. It’s very easy to fill the machine, too. -- M.E. in Wyoming

• If you need to pick up small shards of glass, use a cot-ton ball that’s been moistened, or a slice of white bread (insides only) wadded up.

• That time of the year is almost here. You know, the time when running the heater gives the whole house the zaps. To keep our carpets from giving us static shock, we fill a water spray bottle with one part laundry softener and four parts water. Give the air and carpet a spritz, and it kills the zaps. -- A.O. in Canada

• When you are frying up ground beef, add a tablespoon or two of water. It will help the excess grease to pull away from the meat, making it easier to drain off.

An old man went to the Doctor complaining that his wife could barely hear. The Doctor suggested a test to find out the extent of the problem. “Stand far behind her and ask her a question, and then slowly move up and see how far away you are when she first responds.” The old man excited to finally be working on a solution for the problem, runs home and sees his wife preparing supper. ”Honey” the man asks standing around 20 feet away “whats for supper?” After receiving no response he tried it again 15 feet away, and again no response. Then again at 10 feet away and again no response. Finally he was 5 feet away “honey whats for supper?” She replies “For the fourth time it’s lasagna!”

A: Alyssa -- who recently gave birth to daughter Elizabeth Dylan, who joins big brother Milo Thomas -- said in a recent statement: “After two wonder-ful seasons in Los Angeles, the studio has decided to shoot season three of ‘Mistresses’ in Vancouver, Canada, for finan-cial reasons. It’s with a heavy heart that I have decided that I can’t relocate. I have two babies under 4. Being a mother and wife comes first, and I just cannot uproot my children and separate the family by moving away. I will miss this job desperately and wish everyone the absolute best.”

Q: I really like the new series on Hallmark called “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.” Can you tell me when I can see a new season? -- Adele T., Clyde, Ohio

A: The comedic drama, which follows a group of postal workers who transform themselves into an untraditional team of detectives to track down intended recipients of undeliverable mail, is moving to Hallmark’s sister channel, Hallmark Movies and Mysteries. The show from “Touched by an Angel” executive producer Martha Williamson also is changing its format: It will return to TV as a movie franchise consisting of a series of two-hour original films. Debuting on Nov. 23 at 9/8c, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered for Christmas” will be the first movie in the franchise, with three more slated for 2015.

Returning as the “POstables” crew are Oliver O’Toole (Eric Mabius, “Ugly Betty”), Shane McInerney (Kristin Booth, “Orphan Black”), Rita Haywith (Crystal Lowe, “Smallville”) and Norman Dorman (Geoff Gustafson “Primeval: New World”).
