INSTRUCTIONS: Please complete each of the seven sections below. Any additional information which may be helpful to another chapter would also be appreciated, but do not send extraneous material that would not be useful to other chapters. Project name: SECS Math Workshops Date(s) of Project: 10/19, 10/26, 11/02, 11/09, 11/16/2013 Project X Community/ Liberal Culture __ University/ College __ Profession/ Engineering Area: __ Chapter/ Social X Education/ Prof. Dev. X K-12/MindSET Number of persons who participated in this project Members: 10 Electees: 9 (Please attach a list of names.) Hours spent on this project. Organizing: 48hrs Participating: 9hrs DESCRIPTION: I. General Description: This was a Math Workshop taught over five Saturdays geared towards High School student interested in STEM programs (mainly in Engineering Sciences). The sessions were designed as intense crash courses on each class. Courses offered were Calculus I, Algebra II, and Algebra I. TBP taught Calculus I and Algebra II each Saturday morning (3 hour sessions). High schools from all over Southeast Michigan are invited to partake in this program. II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: This program strives to challenge those high school students who are excelling in their respective math classes in public school and allow them to explore higher levels of math at a fast rate to help prepare them for college and future math courses. This program promotes STEM to k-12 students and provides a service to Oakland‟s SECS by managing and teaching the respective courses. III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) X Yes ___ No This program was co-planned and managed by TBP and the Dean‟s Office for SECS (School of Engineering and Computer Science). Weeks of planning were necessary to create a curriculum, time-frame for the Saturday mornings, and lesson plans for the students. TBP managed the program in conjunction with the dean‟s office promoting the program to local high schools and providing necessary funds. IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Funded by SECS; need volunteers to lead each course as well as volunteer to help students one-on-one with challenging material. V. Special Problems: This was the most extensive and involved project the MI-Q Chapter managed this year. Organization was key in order to make this a success – from communicating with parents about the schedule and timeframes to organizing the lessons and how to effectively teach the courses in only 5 Saturdays. Countless hours were spent by lead instructors developing the curriculum and each Saturday required 4 hours of service to successfully host the sessions.

Page 17: Tau Beta Pi: Michigan-Theta

VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): This program received several positive comments back from students and parents. The program is tough, but very beneficial to the high school students as well as SECS. Because of the success for FALL 2013, the program was decided to continue in the next semester as well. VII. Project name: SECS Math Workshops Date(s) of Project: 03/15, 03/22, 03/29, 04/05, 04/12/2014 Project X Community/ Liberal Culture __ University/ College __ Profession/ Engineering Area: __ Chapter/ Social X Education/ Prof. Dev. X K-12/MindSET Number of persons who participated in this project Members: 16 Electees: 2 (Please attach a list of names.) Hours spent on this project. Organizing: 36hrs Participating: 9hrs DESCRIPTION: I. General Description: This was the Math Workshop continued from the Fall Semester (Project #9) taught over five Saturdays geared towards High School student interested in STEM programs (mainly in Engineering Sciences). The sessions were re-designed for the Winter semester. III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) X Yes ___ No This program was re-designed by a Math Workshop‟s Coordinator from Pontiac Schools District in regards to the management and the curriculum. Many weeks of planning were necessary to create a curriculum, time-frame for the Saturday mornings, and lesson plans for the students. TBP managed the program in conjunction with the Math Workshop Coordinator. IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Funded by SECS; need volunteers to lead each course as well as volunteer to help students one-on-one with challenging material. V. Special Problems: Again, this was the most extensive and involved project the MI-Q Chapter managed this year. Organization was key in order to make this a success – from communicating with parents about the schedule and timeframes to organizing the lessons and how to effectively teach the courses in only 5 Saturdays. Luckily, with a Math Workshop Coordinator, the program ran a lot

Page 51: Tau Beta Pi: Michigan-Theta

MIQ Project Book 2013-2014 Page 51

smoother and effectively this time around. TBP was able to focus mainly on the courses and not the management of the entire program. VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): This program received several positive comments back from students and parents. The program was once again tough, but very beneficial to the high school students as well as SECS. Because of the improvements and successes this term, the program has been sanctioned to continue next Fall. VII. Two Oakland University Alum, who are currently in Law School and are studying to become Patent Attorneys, came to OU to speak about Law School for technical degrees. They discussed the advantages and disadvantages of going to Law School and the steps they took to pursue such a career. A brief Q&A session followed their presentation. II. III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) ___ Yes X No ________________________________________________________________________________ IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: No cost; need funding from CSA for food and guest speakers. V. Special Problems: Need to reserve rooms and applying for CSA/SAFB funding for food more than 3 weeks in advance. Scheduling a time for the Alumni to come and reserve a room on the same date/time was the hardest challenge. VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): This presentation received a lot of positive feedback from the attendees and it was requested by our chapter to hold another Patent Attorney event next Fall or Winter semester. Project name: Hungry Howies Fundraiser Date(s) of Project: 03/10 – 04/11/2014 Project __ Community/ Liberal Culture __ University/ College __ Profession/ Engineering Area: X Chapter/ Social __Education/ Prof. Dev. __ K-12/MindSET Number of persons who participated in this project Members: 16 Electees: 0 (Please attach a list of names.) Hours spent on this project. Organizing: 0hrs Participating: 48hrs DESCRIPTION: I. General Description: Our longest running project for the Winter semester was a fundraiser (dough-raiser) from Hungry Howies. Each of the participants from our chapter sold $5.00 pizza coupons to friends, family, etc. to raise money for our chapter. Incentives for selling were distributed at the end of the fundraiser term such as free pizza coupons or snack tokens for our office. Small prizes were given to top sellers. II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: This fundraiser was designated to raise money for our chapter in order to send more people to District Conferences and National Conventions. III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) __ Yes X No IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Needed a down payment to give to Hungry Howies in order to receive initial set of coupons and money order forms. V. Special Problems: Gauging the interest in this fundraiser is the biggest issue. We were able to gauge initial interest in over half our chapter, from which we assumed we could easily get half of the “interested” members. This totaled around 15-20 participants, which seemed plausible to move forward with the fundraiser. The main goal is to be able to break even and make back your down payment for the initial coupons. VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): This was a MAJOR success for our chapter. At the end of the fundraiser term, we had made a $656.00 profit (after breaking even). Selling the coupons on a college campus proved very easy. As many students are hungry late at night and are working on intense projects – pizza tends to be a simple go-to food. Plus, keeping the coupons‟ price at $5.00 means we made a $2.00 profit on each coupon and it was more marketable (as having a $5 bill, or multiples of $5 bills, is generally common amongst people). We will definitely hold another fundraiser next year for our chapter.
