Terminology

Active – a member who has been initiated into a

chapter, is an undergraduate, and actively participates

Bid – a formal invitation to join a fraternity or sorority

Chapter – a local group of a fraternal organization

Colony – a group in the initial stage before being

installed as a chapter of a nationally affiliated

organization

FSL – Fraternity and Sorority Life

Initiation – a formal ceremony during which a man or

woman gains full fraternity or sorority membership

Intake – process through which NPHC organizations

gain new members

Legacy – a potential new member whose immediate

family member or grandparent is in a fraternity or

sorority

Local Chapter – a Greek lettered organization that is

not affiliated with a national organization

New Member – a member who has accepted the bid of

a fraternity or sorority but has not been initiated yet

Potential New Member (PNM) – a person interested in

becoming a member of a fraternity or sorority

Recruitment – the mutual choice and selection process

to determine fraternity or sorority membership

Ritual – the traditional beliefs and oaths of a fraternity

or sorority

Article 5: Proscribed Conduct

5.3 Hazing. Apathy or acquiescence in the

presence of hazing are not neutral acts; they are

violations of this policy.

Article 8: Definitions

8.17 Any action taken or situation created, whether

on or off chapter premises, to produce or cause

mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment,

harassment, or ridicule.

Alcohol & Drug Policies

Article 5: Proscribed Conduct

Several policies related to use, possession, and

distribution, of alcohol and drugs; paraphernalia;

bulk quantities of alcohol; drinking games; etc.

Events with alcohol must be registered with the

Office of Student Engagement and follow all

registration polices.

Alcohol cannot be present at any

pledge/associate/new member program.

NPHC Membership Intake• Membership intake is the process of selecting, educating and

initiating new members into a NPHC chapter. This process is

prescribed by the national organization.

• Each chapter conducts intake once every 1-2 years

• Discretion and professionalism are very important

• Chapters often require a GPA above 2.5, 12-24 completed college

credit hours prior to joining, and letters of recommendation

• Contact the President or Intake Chair directly

• When a chapter is conducting intake, they will host an informational

meeting where you can learn more about their process
