Target Audience Research – Focus Group

My Focus GroupFor this research task, I spoke to 6 males aged 16-24 who are of different backgrounds and ethnicities. However, they all like enjoy listening to hip-hop music. I asked them various different questions on what they would like to see in a hip-hop music magazine. I’m going to analyze these results to determine what will be ideal to include in my hip-hop magazine.

The 6 Males I Asked Were: James B Lewis B George M Mustafa S Darious G Ryan T

I discussed with them 11 questions and noted the results they are shown below

Section 1 - The Front Cover: 1. What images would you like to see on the front cover? We discussed this question and we

come to the agreement that a male artists should be used throughout this can be a main attraction point. Also, we discussed the use of a microphone to show the hip-hop genre. Finally, we talked about a theme to use for the front cover and everyone said that a graffiti theme would definitely work well.

2. What cover and sell lines should be used? We spoke and decided that the cover lines should revolve around artist’s gossips and hip-hop events. The discussion developed and a good idea arose and this was to use a flasher to advertise a double page spread poster inside.

3. What colours would be appropriate? The colour scheme was quite easy to discuss. Everyone said that I need to keep my colour scheme basic black, white, red and yellow. The reason for this is that I have basic colours then I have two bright house styles to stand out, which will attract the audience’s attention.

4. What type of language would you expect? Everyone in the group said that I need to use appropriate language so they said if I’m quoting an artists dialogue then I can use slang. However, when writing the commentary text of the magazine I need to use standard language so all audiences can understand it.

Section 2 – The Contents Page:5. What type of images would you like and how many? The group suggested that I use 2-4

images and to have 1 dominant image this will be to attract various different hip-hop tastes.6. What would you want to be contained within the magazine? The group stated that they

would like to see a wide range of categories: interviews, gig listings, local event, gossip and posters.

7. How much text and images should be used? The group and I discussed this and came to the conclusion that I need to include and eye catching amount of images with just enogh text to make the page look appropriate and no have too much text so it looks dull and

Page 4: Task 9 - Research Using Quantitative Methods Such as Questionnaires

boring.

Section 3 – The Double Page Spread Article:8. What Image should I used for the article? The group and I decided that I should use images

that have a strong link with the hip-hop artist on the front also for there to be an article on this male artist too. Secondly, we said that the double page spread should have the same theme as the other pages so that the magazine portrays the effect of the hip-hop genre.

9. What should I write the article about? This question was resolved very fast. We decided that I should write an article on how the hip-hop artists has became famous so fast and how his life was when he lived in the ghetto slums.

10. What language should I use? This question was discussed about all the different parts of the magazine. We all suggested that the magazine should have elements of ghetto language but for me to convey this through artist’s dialogue as some readers may not understand it and might want to read the articles.

11. What elements should dominant my article page? We discussed whether images or text should dominant my article. We finally come to the conclusion that I have a main image on one page with the date, page number and mast head in the bottom corner. On the main image page for there to be themes of hip-hop such as graffiti. Then on the other page we discussed about having one smaller image and then the text article. Also I need to include other features such as quotes from the artist on this page too.

ConclusionTo conclude, I believe that this task was very significant in helping me distinguish the final methods, themes and elements that I’m going to use when creating my magazine. I will carry through most of these ideas and create a hip-hop genre magazine that attracts the correct audience.
