What is documentary?

• A documentary is information based that has evidence to support the facts. Documentary tries to attempt to document reality of a person, places or an event and usually have one narrator. This can be presented in either a film or TV program. These facts are normally based on scientific or educational topics.

What is Educating Essex?

• A documentary programme to give an insight into the day to day life of staff and students in a challenging mainstream secondary school in Essex. This included interviews to get an idea of both teachers and students and how they cope with behaviour and strategies to deal with it.

Voiceover

• Voiceover- Voiceovers were used throughout the documentary to tell the story or explain the scenario. Also facts were told about the school such as the results. In parts of the documentary the Deputy Head does voiceover, which expressing his thoughts on the school. The other voiceover is from a narrator. Deputy Head as a

voiceover which is from the interview.

• Subtitles- This was used to introduce teachers and their role in the school and the students that featured in the episode.

Set• Set-In a mainstream Secondary school

• Interviews-This is used to get people’s opinions on how the school is run and why actions are taken. Interviews with students. Teachers and students parents.

• Diegetic and non-diegetic- The Christmas music which was diegetic as it was playing on the radio, also the students ands and teacher were diegetic. The voice overs and the music played on top of the scenes were non-diegetic.

• Scenarios and events- Everyday life in a school with difficult students and how they try to deal with their problems and behaviour.

• Main character- Deputy head who deal with the behaviour in the school and the real students that attend the school.

• The facts are based on the rules of the school, about the teacher and about the students that attend the school. Also facts on the result of pupils that went to the school.
