MISE-EN-SCENE• The mise-en-scene in a television documentary is always

relevant to the subject or the interviewee.• The lighting is provided behind the camera, it is usually

artificial but natural lighting can be used for effect.

CAMERAWORK• The interviewee is framed to the left or the right of centre,

this obeys the rule of thirds as the interviewee is roughly a third of the way into the frame.• A medium close up and a close up are the most common

shots that an interviewee is captured in. However big close ups can be used for effect.

CAMERAWORK• The background behind the interviewee is often out of focus,

especially if it is about the interviewee rather than the subject of the documentary.• The person being interviewed is conventionally sat on a fixed

chair so that they are not moving around in the shot. • A tripod is normally used so that the camera stays still, this

makes for a stable shot.

EDITING• The camera is ignored by the interviewee and so direct

address is not used, this makes it easy for the viewer to observe the documentary.• Questions asked by the interviewer are edited out, this is a

cut away and it avoids the use of a jump cut which can make the composition disjointed. A cut away allow the documentary to run smoothly.

GRAPHICS• Text is superimposed over the video material, this is often a

name in a bigger font than the sublime below it. The subline anchors the person being interviewed to the subject of the documentary.• Sometimes a green screen can be used behind an

interviewee, this often has images or videos of the subject; it is always relevant to the subject or the interviewee.• Superimposed fonts normally link to the subject in the

documentary.

SOUND• Non diagetic sound can be used in interviews, the

documentary could be about a TV show and the theme tune may be played for example. This must not intervene with the interview.
