OUCH! It can happen any time. An accident can happen, and an injury occurs. During this emblem, you will learn basic first aid techniques so that you can assist during those moments of distress.

To earn the First Aid emblem, you must complete FIVE tasks.

Task 1: first aid

When an injury happens, first aid is care given immediately. It should be a quick, sometimes temporary, measure until a doctor is seen. In order to be helpful when an emergency arises, we should be familiar with basic first aid techniques so that we can act fast!

If the injury is severe, use first aid to comfort the injured person until emergency personnel can arrive. Call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number, and be prepared to give the information needed to reach your location quickly.

• Location of accident

• Injuries (type and number)

• First aid given

• Equipment needed

Memorize the LIFE acronym, and recite it to your troop leader.

Task 2: first aid kit

First aid kits should be made available in your home, church, car, and office. It’s a good idea to have one in your backpack or duffle bag too! So, what needs to be in a first aid kit?

• Bandages in assorted sizes

• Cloth tape

• Antibiotic ointment

• Hand wipes/Antiseptic wipes

• Cold compress

• Latex gloves

• Hydrocortisone ointment

• Scissors

• Roll elastic bandage

• Sterile gauze pads

• Oral thermometer

• Triangular bandage

• Tweezers

• Emergency phone numbers

• First aid manual

With your troop, go on a hunt to inspect the first aid kits where your troop meets. Also, check the van or bus for a first aid kit. Make sure the supplies are not expired and packages are not empty. Refill the kits with fresh supplies so if an emergency happens, you are ready!

During play, exercise, or an athletic game, an injury can easily happen. Twists, sprains, and pulls can be very painful. With these injuries, you want to care for them immediately to reduce pain and swelling.

To help remember how to treat these injuries, make a poster showing the steps of care following the acronym RICE.

1. Rest the area. Don’t move it and keep weight off. A splint or brace may be fitted to keep the area from moving.

2. Ice the area. Make an ice pack or use a cold compress to help limit the swelling. The sooner you can do this, the better. Continue to ice the area for 15 minutes, and do this several times a day.

3. Compression. Use an elastic brace or wrap to cover the area and to keep it held in place.

4. Elevate. Raising the injured area above your heart when possible may help prevent and limit swelling.

Task 4: sprains

Watch a video or in person demonstration of how to help a choking victim. With the supervision of your leader, practice what to do with a partner. Never do this in play. You should only use these techniques if a person is really choking.

Task 5: choking

Invite a nurse, doctor, or Red Cross worker to visit your group. Ask them to review typical first aid care and share tips to stay healthy.

Task 6: visitor

In Luke 10:30–37, Jesus shares a parable about a man who is injured on the roadway. A stranger walks by and performs first aid for the injured man and gets him to safety. As a troop, act out this parable, and find the message that Jesus is teaching with the story. Your troop leader will provide props to help you along the way!

Often, basic first aid will be all that is needed to take care of minor injuries, but the Explorers need to know how to give information to emergency medical personnel. For this task, they should memorize the acronym LIFE to help them remember to be prepared to tell:

Location of accident

Injuries (type and number)

Equipment needed

Task 1: first aid

A first aid kit should be available in your building and vehicles. The tendency is to think of the first aid kit only when it is needed, and then it is too late to replace supplies! It is a good practice to review the supplies in each first aid kit quarterly so if an emergency arises, you will be prepared. If you have no first aid kits, start basic. Any small container will work, and basic supplies can be picked up at a local store or pharmacy.

As you check the first aid kits, explain what each item is used for before you restock.

— Bandages in assorted sizes: to cover minor scrapes, cuts, and burns.

— Cloth tape: used to hold down gauze or bandage.

— Antibiotic ointment: used for treating minor cuts and scrapes.

— Antiseptic wipes: used for cleaning wound site.

— Cold compress: for bumps and bruises to relieve swelling and pain.

— Latex gloves: to be worn to prevent touching any type of body fluid.

— Hydrocortisone ointment: to relieve itching and stinging.

— Scissors: for trimming bandages, tapes, and other supplies.

Task 3: minor injuries

— Roll elastic bandage: for wrapping wrist, elbow, ankle, and knee injuries.

— Sterile gauze pads: to hold while applying pressure or used to cover wounds.

— Oral thermometer: used to check temperature of injured or ill.

— Triangular bandage: used for wrapping injuries or making slings.

— Tweezers: for removing splinters, debris, stingers, and ticks.

— Emergency phone numbers: to call for help and backup.

— First aid manual: to remind you what to do.

Cut: Clean the wound with soap and water. Cover with a bandage once bleeding has stopped.

Bee sting: Check to see if the stinger is still present. If so, remove with tweezers. Cover with a cold compress. The cold will ease the pain and reduce the swelling.

Nosebleed: Have the person sit and lean forward. Pinch both sides of nostrils, and hold pressure for five minutes. Apply a cold compress over nose. If bleeding continues, call a doctor.

Burn: This treatment depends on the severity of the burn. If the area becomes red and sore, it is a first-degree burn. Run cool water over site and cover with a clean cool cloth. If blisters form, do not break them. Apply cool water or aloe vera lotion. Cover with cool cloth. If the skin is removed, cover the injured part, and take the injured person to a hospital.

Task 4: sprains

Provide material for the boys to create a poster to share the information they learned about using the RICE method to care for sprains and twists.

1. Rest the area. Don’t move it and keep weight off. A splint or brace may be fitted to keep the area from moving.

2. Ice the area. Make an ice pack or use a cold compress to help limit the swelling. The

sooner you can do this, the better. Continue to ice the area for 15 minutes, and do this several times a day.

3. Compression. Use an elastic brace or wrap to cover the area, and keep it held in place.

4. Elevate. Raising the injured area above your heart when possible may help prevent and limit swelling.

Task 5: choking

It is important to remind the boys that this is not a game, and that this method is used in emergencies for a person choking. If possible, invite a certified nurse or Red Cross volunteer to come to visit your troop, and share the proper methods of helping a choking victim.

In case of choking:1. Have the person bend forward, and

administer five hits between the shoulder blades.

2. Stand the adult up. Measure two fingers distance above the navel. Grab your fist, hugging your victim. Pull inward and upward. Repeat five times.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until person has pushed out the object.

4. If the person becomes unconscious, call 9-1-1 immediately.

There are many tips for fighting germs and treating minor first aid injuries. You can find a local Red Cross chapter at this link — http://www.redcross.org/find-your-local-chapter — if you do not know where the closest one is to you. Local pediatric clinics or hospitals may have a nurse or doctor that is willing to visit your troop, and share these tips and facts. Call around and find a visitor that is in your area.

Task 6: visitor

Luke 10:30–37 (NIrV): Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho. Robbers attacked him. They stripped off his clothes and beat him. Then they went away, leaving him almost dead. A priest happened to be going down that same road. When he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. A Levite also came by. When he saw the man, he passed by on the other side too. But a Samaritan came to the place where the man was. When he saw the man, he felt sorry for him. He went to him, poured olive oil and wine on his wounds and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey. He brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two silver coins. He gave them to the owner of the inn. ‘Take care of him,’ he said. ‘When I return, I will pay you back for any extra expense you may have.’ “Which of the three do you think was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by robbers?” The authority on the law replied, “The one who felt sorry for him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do as he did.”

If you have a boy who does not want to act in the drama, have him help out with the props.

Matthew 22:37–38 NIRV“Jesus replied, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love

him with all your mind. This is the first and most important commandment.’”

Supplies: Workout items such as barbells, yoga mat, resistance cord, weighted ball, or ankle weights

Introduction: Do you know anyone who exercises regularly? I need a couple of volunteers to come up here, and show us how to exercise with this equipment. (Give volunteers a few moments to show how to use the equipment you brought.) It is important to keep our bodies healthy. Tell me some things we can do to stay healthy. (Give time for responses such as exercise, eat right, get enough sleep, and reduce stress.) Just as important as it is to keep our bodies healthy, it is also important for us to stay spiritually healthy. Jesus tells us in Matthew how we can do this.

Scripture: Listen as I read Matthew 22:37–38: Jesus replied, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love him with all your mind.’ This is the first and most important commandment.” Now let’s try to do motions for this verse:

Jesus replied (Point up.)

Love the Lord your God (Hug yourself and raise both arms up to heaven.)

With all your heart (Make a large circle in the air, and bring both hands up to your heart.)

And with all your soul (Bend down, and pull your hands up from toe to head.)

Love him (Hug yourself.)

With all your mind. (Tap the top of your head three times.)

This is the first and most important commandment. (Hold up your pointer finger.)

Now let’s try it one more time. (Repeat with whole group.) If we do these three things, then we will stay spiritually healthy, and that is very important!

Who would like to show me this memory verse all by yourself? (Give time for a few boys to show you the motions to this memory verse as time permits.)

Prayer

Jesus, You are so good! Help us to love You with all that we are each and every day. Let us share Your love with others by our actions and words. In Your name, amen.
