Trends in the MFP Industry of Emerging Markets
According to IDC, the worldwide hardcopy peripherals market decreased 9.7% year over year with 25.8 million units shipped in the first quarter of 2013 (1Q13) & the shipment value experienced a decline of 5.7% year over year to $14.3 billion.
Laser MFP market saw decline of -4% in developed nations while observing a double digit growth of +13% in developing countries. The laser printer & MFP majorly contributed to the 13.7% yearly growth in India in 2012 & it is expected to fuel the projected 15% growth in 2013 in Vietnam. In 1Q 2013 CMR’s India Review, Multi function printer shipments exceeded the single function printer in the A4 segment market in India. The laser printer market seems to have growth potentialyl and has shown 10% YOY growth and hence most of the MFP majors have placed huge bets in their bid to capitalize this market
While there is a positive growth trend in emerging market (ASEAN, Latin America, China, India and Eastern Europe), the projected growth does not help the substantial shrinking MFP market in developed countries. In order to improve MFP market potential, it has now become imperative for the MFP majors to increase their market potential in the emerging market.
Increase in R&D spending on captive center establishment, strategic development alliances or partnership with leading education institutions for innovations are seen on the rise from 2010 onwards after the economic slowdown.
Increase in R&D and marketing spend to boost market share is seen predominantly from global MFP Majors. These initiatives are focused on Glocalization of the existing product and engagement in re-innovation for the emerging market has picked up momentum from MFP majors.
MFP Industry is witnessing a key trend in the acquisition of dealers to gain market leadership in the developed nations. With Konica Minolta & Xerox leading the pack of acquisitions in their transition from an OEM to a managed print services and IT services providers as a part of their global strategies, the emerging industry does see a similar focus on the Integrated Solutions needs around MFP products in the emerging nations. Specifically, Managed Print Services focused on Industry specific solutions is seen on the rise. However, direct marketing is observed as the successful trend in the emerging nations.
In reducing the total TCO, the MFP majors have turned to innovative product development approaches. These initiatives are aimed at both excelling the growth in emerging market and increasing the market share back in developed market.
The industry verticals like education, government, healthcare and manufacturing in the emerging nations do leapfrog to the latest technologies in Mobility & cloud. Hence they need latest technology solutions at affordable cost. The need for providing these niche and value added services arise both in emerging and developed nations with additional costing challenges in emerging nations.

Hence, MFP majors need to develop the solutions at an extremely high pace that the time to market pressure is at an all time high to realize market capitalizations in both emerging and developed nations.
Factors affecting Emerging Nations in the MFP markets
As per Printing Industry center at RIT’s analysis on the emerging nations, the micro factors like newspaper readership, literacy rates, student enrollment and internet penetration impact the print industry of emerging countries.
The developed nations have 100% literacy and it accounts for the saturation of the growth in the Industries like education and print media like Newspapers and Magazines. The market has started to shrink in developed countries as there are no new markets.
The emerging nations have a different scenario. For e.g., the Literacy rate in India increased only from 64.83% in 2001 to 74.04% in 2011 but this increase signifies a large volume market potential considering the country’s population. This impacts the potential market size for industry like education and print media like newspapers and magazines. Newspaper circulation and the need for study materials are on the rise in emerging nations.
The percentage of population using PC and internet is very low in emerging nations. This directly indicates that the need and the use of hardcopy materials post a huge positive growth trend.
However, the analysts have not projected a similar growth proportional to the increase in need in emerging nations. There are various market drivers which would need to be understood in order to address the untapped market space in emerging markets.
Untapped Markets – Gaps & Enablers
As the micro factors that impact the print industry is changing rapidly, this untapped market space for the print industry is also increasing widely. In this whitepaper the emerging market gaps and enablers for the MFP market are predicted as per the above diagram.

Over various market understanding and experiences, the untapped market potentials can be unearthed if the Market Gaps arising out of the following factors are understood by the MFP major. They include:
1. Affordability & Availability gaps
2. Availability of Product use ecosystems
3. Product Robustness & Longevity
The market drivers are supported by the market enablers that include:
1. Product Innovation
2. Service Innovation
The MFP is not a new product in the emerging market. However, the market reach in emerging market is very limited to large business entities who operate globally or who have specific business needs or a business model using MFPs.
As the MFP majors continuously move towards reducing the TCO through innovations in power consumption and print technology, it has resulted in the growth of laser printer market sales. The laser printers are still not an affordable product in the emerging market to the extent where the MFP is not still much used by the SMBs and average households with students. Further with the lack of MFP availability in emerging nations for user experience like the ones we have in convenient stores and Kiosks in developed nations, the MFP is still viewed as an electronic device which needs high technical skills to operate. The affordability and availability constraints have really put a constraint in opening up the much required expansion in the customer base.
The lack of smooth product use ecosystem?? is a typical challenge in emerging nations like the quick and easy product maintenance. As these nations have a huge urban and rural divide, much of the access to various modern life conveniences available in urban areas is of limited or of no availability in rural areas. This actually puts a constraint in the ease of product use. As the emerging nations have very less PC and internet penetration, a simple ink or a cartridge refill process is not as simple as doing a few clicks on the computer nor can the remote customer service be applied for better planning. The time consuming process does end up as an economically unfit option. Further, service requests due take it time course of complete rectification.?? As most of the emerging nation’s population (like 68% in India in 2011) still lives in rural areas, these markets need an economically viable product use ecosystem.
The cost driven emerging market, a MFP or a printer is procured with a lifetime use in thought process unlike the limited usage period and service expiration time in developed nations. This calls for robustness and longevity of the product. The MFP has undergone innovations in the product materials over light weight substitutes with good heat resistant capacities. However these innovations are suitable to the usage scenarios in the developed nations, while the emerging nations post different challenges for robustness owing to

the climate conditions, infrastructure, harsh environment and usage. The MFP failure scenarios at emerging nations do post a need for increasing the robustness of the MFP and also device a business model for the emerging nations to improve the longevity of the product usage
Product needs in terms of affordability and availability, Product ecosystem needs and product use environment factors required to address these gaps for realizing the untapped market space will be further discussed in detail in this whitepaper. Further, emerging nations’ scenarios are considered from a middle class need perspective.
Product needs in MFP’s Emerging Market
Product innovation has driven all the emerging nations today to success. The Indian Tata group's Swach water purifier and Mexican Volaris airlines success case studies showcase that they created the unexplored middle class market by making the products affordable to them and tapped their share in the respective matured competitive market. MFP manufacturers need product innovation to tap this unexplored middle class market. As per OECD, the global middle class will grow by 3 Billion to 4.9 Billion in 2030. It is very important for the MFP makers to strategize and produce products to capitalize this market. Hence, the product in the current form may not be a suitable option for the emerging market and the need to reinvent MFP for the emerging market arises in very many ways. Let’s explore the innovation the market needs defined by people who interact with end customers every day.
Over the years, the MFP majors have spent huge R&D effort to make it more affordable for the developed nations. The emerging nation customer will require a no-frills product, low TCO, low maintenance (no breakdowns) and low operation cost (low power use, less refills). The above wish list is not much different to the customers in the developed nations but the price range expectation does make a big challenge to the MFP Majors. A clean slate innovation is required for emerging nations.
Needs in Feeding System: Paper jam is one of most common service issues that need immediate attention by the MFP manufacturers in the emerging nations. The analysis of the reasons behind the frequent paper jam does give a good perception for innovation needs. The three main reasons include:
a. Low quality of paper used for printing
b. Dust accumulation in the feeding system
c. Damage of paper feeding clutches
Even large corporations and government agencies use normal quality paper sold in these countries for economical paper cost & these are perceived as low quality paper that can be used in MFPs. Further, government agencies use standard template letterheads prepared months and years back. As these papers contain paper dust and loose fibers, they lead to huge dust accumulation, low print quality, huge consumable wastage and frequent complicated

9
breakdowns. Moreover, from the dealer’s perspective it is a complicated process to educate and justify these customers on the use of better quality paper.
The products currently do handle fine dust particle accumulation with MFP manufacturers like Xerox boasting of dust free solution through their solid ink technology. However in emerging nations, owing to the lack of clean atmosphere in which the MFPs are operated along with dust accumulation due to the use of low quality paper, dust accumulation in the printers drastically affect the print quality and efficiency of the printers. Samsung in its SCX-3405F laser model provides a dust protection cover, but this isn’t enough to combat the paper jam issues in the feeding system.
In most of the business that run on providing photocopying as a pay per use service, there is a huge transaction of various types of materials which are photocopied and these are typically serviced with a huge demand in queue. Hence the machines are operated in an urgency where there is no smooth operation pattern. The damages to the paper feeding clutches bring in machine downtime which is perceived as a huge business loss for SMBs. More than improving the robustness of the feeding clutches, an innovative design of the paper feeding system will be required which could reduce the wear and tear of parts with a more cost effective option that will be very much required to open up the market potential of the current unexplored emerging market.
Needs in Printer Drivers: More than the cost of the MFP, the TCO that various organizations had to incur post a huge blocking factor. As the Indian Government has recently proposed to go with LINUX (open source) in its e-governance projects, the current open source and drivers for Linux platform provided by the MFP makers are not very rich like the windows platform. As per Gartner, Government IT Spending in India reached $6.4 Billion in 2013 posting a 7% increase over 2012. Further, IT spending by India Inc. will be 2.67 lakh crore rupees (approximately 43B$) by 2016 as per Gartner’s Projection.
As much of the government sector office environment operates without computers, the technical skills to use the MFP will be a challenge using the Linux environment. As these would need an MFP for their operations, the ease of use is very much a necessary criteria and it will act as a huge deciding factor. The printer driver provided for installations is not self sufficient and user friendly.
As the MFPs are delivered, many of the customer offices use their IT support team and there has been a huge request to support the printer driver installation process from the Channels as they get struck up over certain issues which is not well identified in the manual or automatically taken care of. This actually puts down the initial impression of the MFP delivered & culturally it plays a huge factor in further business decisions.
A complete innovative relook onto the printer driver solution offering will be a key driving factor for businesses. An interactive electronic manual using augmented reality along with voice guidance in

multiple languages can be the best option to break the mindset and make it look simpler to open an unexplored market.
Need of No-frills & Just in time production MFP: The most frequent challenges faced by the MFP channel marketing and sales team today in the emerging market when they would present the whole gamut of features that an MFP can deliver to a potential customer - the customer boils down the point to how many features can be offloaded for a lower price. This is something which is very difficult that the MFP makers can offer today. This would require a complete modularity in the MFP feature options. MFPs are not designed and developed with such considerations. Many of the features which are built on to the main PCB or which are packaged in the basic firmware would look irrelevant in emerging market scenario.
Toyota entered US market successfully in early 60’s with their just in time and lean production servicing techniques. They could achieve lower manufacturing cost and price it lower when compared to their competitors. This combined with high quality enabled them to top the market share. MFP majors will need to device a similar approach towards emerging market. A typical scenario of a Photocopy shop which services photocopy of legal documents outside a government office would not require options like fax, network, Imaging options (pdf conversion, etc) and the like. However, these service shops handle huge volume of customer and hence they would need a MFP with high performance.
The growing adoption of mobility and cloud by the emerging nations is much comparable to the developed nations. Hence there is a need for a no-frill MFP and to utilize other features over cloud enabled by high performance computing. Even if this would mean slow performance on these featured services, it would be a lucrative business model for the emerging nations.
Numerous similar scenarios can be identified across various SMBs sectors. The similar no-frill request doesn’t only apply to the hardware & firmware but it also applies to the huge bulky panel software which the MFP major facilitates. Typical SMBs who provide a MFP in their office space to their employees would need MFP operations that can be locked other than photocopy and duplex B/W print, etc. This requires not only trimming the MFP hardware but also requires a simple set of few screens which the employees can use and the customers would want to pay only for the few screens panel.
In certain scenarios, the customers require no MFP panel if their limited operations can be handled by few sets of predefined hard keys. All these drive a new unrealized MFP at a low cost.
Certainly, a new design and development would require for the emerging market. Such exercise would require design with emerging market understanding and leverage the rich development knowledge of the developed nations.
Need for Latest technology adoption: The emerging countries leapfrog the technologies and adopt them in par with the developed

nations. For e.g. like US; India and China posted a steady decline in the telephone line usage and observed a rapid growth in the Mobile phone usage and adoption to Mobile network technologies. The penetration of mobile technology is due to the low cost of procurement and operation cost. MFP needs to tap this trend into their offerings. MFPs do come with an inbuilt modem to connect to a telephone line but it is not equipped to insert a sim card to connect to a mobile network. The enablement to connect over a mobile network would open up the MPS service which is not utilized in emerging nations. Though the concept of the MPS service is to reduce the TCO of the customers and deploy pay per use, the infra facility cost like the telephone connection or the broadband requirement has economically ceased the merit of MPS service. However, an adoption to the latest technology would open up a new unexplored market.
HP and Samsung have unveiled their latest MFPs with NFC for touch to print feature targeting the emerging market. Among the other features which are in high demand include Bluetooth printing, scan to smart devices, etc.
Product environment needs in MFP’s Emerging Market
Needs in Packaging: The emerging nations are yet to evolve in its infrastructure with respect to roads, energy generation and modernized logistic system. A very common service need that occurs in the emerging nations after a MFP is delivered to the customer location would be related to the fact that the MFP has suffered damages during transportation. This adds up in the initial service needs to be done at dealers’ cost who certainly makes it as a factor in his pricing over his operational experience. MFP majors have spent years of research in its packing and assembly but the challenges present at the emerging nations call for a redesign in its packing and to make it more robust. Needs in Body Material: Another frequent service need points to the Chassis material quality that has to be improved. As there are many issues those are catered to due to low robustness wrt the emerging nations’ usage scenarios, the burden is either borne by the end customer or the dealers based on deal commitments. As photocopy is the most widely used operation the drum/roller, the quality needs to be improved. The service life is not satisfactory to the customers and it becomes a decision factor during renewals. Needs in Power Module: Power fluctuations & power outage is a very common phenomenon. It is a common practice to involve a UPS and a stabilizer to protect the device like MFP as power module design of the MFP would not have factored the same. Further, to continue the business without interruptions, power backups like inverters are assembled as MFP don’t have an option to run on a battery pack. These constraints not only increase the

12
TCO but also impact the longevity of usage. A redesign of the Power module would enable this reduction in TCO. Needs in MFP refurbishment: In the developed nations, MFP majors strive hard to develop the end of life ecosystem by collecting the used MFP and refurbish them to score ECO points. However, the same can be a lucrative business model if it is implemented in the emerging nations. It will further provide inputs to the need in robustness in the MFP parts that undergo damage. This would enable to tap the product intelligence. Needs in daily maintenance: It is very common that the MFPs used by the SMBs operate in a non-air conditioned and open air atmosphere. Dust accumulation in the MFP highly affects the longevity of the parts. While MFP manufactures have addressed technology needs where the dust accumulations due to MFP’s own operation, an innovative redesign of the MFP assembly where the MFP can be cleaned off dust after a day’s use will add to the longevity of the MFP use & reduce downtimes.
Product ecosystem needs in MFP’s Emerging Market
Needs to tap remote service: The remote servicing options which are widely used across the developed nations are hardly implemented in the emerging nations. It is just a classroom training session for the service engineers. It is not used in reality. A remote desktop connectivity is also required where the service engineer can remotely load the MFP panel on his system and check the behavior. Since many customers have huge network spanning across villages and remote areas, the service time can be heavily reduced. Most of the customers refrain from the usage as it supports the connectivity through telephone or internet. Since the telephone and internet are still costly, they expect connectivity over mobile network which is a much cheaper option. The usage of remote servicing will also help channel to reduce their servicing cost & thereby reduce the MFP cost.
Needs in Channel Support: The MFP dealers and the Channels do face an ongoing challenge in training the service engineers. In the rapidly growing emerging economy, the channels face attrition of service engineers because of the increase in their business overhead . These overheads are transferred to the end customer to a larger extend as the dealer prices the product by factoring all these parameters. An interactive application or an FAQ based training material can give a flexibility of inducting a service engineer with less training and enabling his service capability over experience. It will also impact the product pricing by the MFP dealers.
Needs to tap MPS Market: MPS market can be a very good option as it reduces the TCO and in the emerging market scenario, it would need less capital to start a service business based on MFP. Further,

13
it would be very much welcomed by the SMBs. However, this MPS service market has not picked up in the emerging nations with its current technology setup needs. When it comes from the deals and MPS service providers, a huge level of network establishment and heavy infrastructure on the end user device connectivity doesn’t post a viable business option. From the end user perspective, he would need to establish the infra to enable the MFP connectivity with the service provider. Mobility and Cloud can be the one option towards easing the MPS setup overhead. A redesign of the MPS business model and an offering by adopting latest technologies will be required. This would enable a new MFP user market though MPS over the new leapfrog technology. Needs in Customer Experience: Increased awareness and understanding of MFP will create a new market space. Emerging nations like India has less number of people who hold bank accounts as it is perceived complicated. ICICI bank in India tapped this unexplored customer market. It revolutionized the Indian banking service by technology advancement which the banks in developed nations try to replicate today. ICICI provide majority of the banking service through ATMs and online secured portals. The success also lies in the pleasure of banking experienced by the end customers in the ATM machine. Today, there is a lack of MFP experience that can be perceived as one portion of the untapped potential emerging market. Though most of the household with students would need MFPs, it is hardly perceived as a household necessity. The MFP is perceived as complex and complicated. Increasing the customer experience through establishment of self operating MFP Kiosks and automated refill stations can be a good idea. Service innovations in increasing the user experience will enable the MFP majors to tap the unexplored customer base in the emerging nations. Alternatively increased awareness of the customer experience will enable MFP majors to understand the emerging customer needs which they lack today. Enabling Product intelligence acquisition by designing MFP to tap customer experience and use big data analytics to understand future needs would enable them to retain customers.
Summary
As the MFP majors are focused in exploring the potentials of the emerging market through many initiatives, the huge volume of unexplored emerging market’s middle class needs have to be tapped and targeted as potential customers. The MFP majors need to do a clean slate Innovation for the same. They would need to understand and mature in the emerging market to strategize their future growth and survive the current diminishing Printer market landscape. Tapping the global middle class market will further establish the future leader from the current clustered market.
