Valediction
Indian masters of the Great Ages were recognized worldwide for their dexterous pursuit ofvalid knowledge and aesthec conceptualizaon of creave pracce. Reading history
convinces us that several sciences (Śāstras), lores (Vidyas) and arts (Kalās) were vigorouslystudied, researched and taught in the universies of India and that this tradion spanned overtens of thousands of years. Thousands of treases on dierent elds of study remain as undyingimprints. Any tradional knowledge, besides being a way of life, is an authority system that setsout the rules governing the proper use of available resources. Then, what were theepistemological foundaons on which the ancient Indian higher-learning instuons andacademia could raise a stunningly ongoing authority system? Or, was there any running methodof treang a scienc subject?
Such quesons call for Tantrayuks - the essenal guidelines for controlling, monitoring andstandardizing scienc pracces. Tantra means a science or a scienc trease. Yuk means‘a means or a device’. Thus the compound word Tantrayuk means the device for composing, understanding and interpreng a scienc trease. Indian thinkers had formulated amethodology of scienc composions having around a hundred constuents in which 39Tantrayuks were used as major devices while 15 Vyākhyās, 7 Kalpanās, 20 Āśrayās, 17 Tāchīlyāsetc were used as minor (supporve) devices.
The Tantrayuks spell out the epistemology of scienc topics. The purpose of Tantrayuksis mainly two-fold: the arrangement of sentences and the organizaon of meanings ( uÉÉYrÉrÉÉåeÉlÉqÉçAjÉïrÉÉåeÉlÉÇ cÉ ). Tantrayuks are expounded with a view to impart systemac knowledge of ascience, since a science protects its praconer only if it is judiciously learnt. A student who isfamiliar with them can quickly gain knowledge of any discipline.
As major devices the Tantrayuks are the backbone of research. Tantrayuks reveal asystem-based approach unique to the Vedic lore which emphasizes the interdependence and
interacve nature of elements internal and external to a discipline. They furnish an opmalperspecve for interdisciplinary and applied sciences such as linguiscs, aesthecs, medicine(Āyurveda) and polity (Arthaśāstram) where a big picture approach is wanted.
Pān.ini (c.5 BCE) had made use of more than 28 of these devices in As.t.ādhyāyī. TheKaut.alīyārthaśāstram has its last chapter named Tantrayukh., where 32 devices are clearlydened and employed. Carakasamhitā enumerates 36 Tantrayuks. The other source treasesinclude Suśrutasamhitā, As.t.āngahr.dayam, Vis.n.udharmoarapurān.am and Vāmana’s Kāvyālankārah..Relevant to our interests, the long lineage from Tantrayukvicārah. (Nīlamegha, 9 CE) toTantrayukvivekam (Vaidyabhushanam Raghavan Thirumulpad, 1976) corroborates theessenal study and pracce of these devices prevailed among Keralite Āyurveda praconers.
In short, both convergent and divergent processes of thinking are properly beneedthrough the Tantrayukvicārah. The Tantrayuks and allied constuents come underparatahpramānas (subordinate evidences) in the Vedic knowledge system where the Vedas arerevered as svatah.pramān.a (self evident and supremely authoritave). Here comes the role ofMīmāmsā as an essenal supporve system of all Indian sciences because it provides amethodology for resolving possible conicts between statements in the text of the Vedas, which can also be applied to Āyurveda and the like, where their own methodology ofTantrayuks falls short hermeneucally. Āyurvedic textual tradions are very suggesve ofMīmāmsā perspecve. Thus, the study of Tantrayuks as the major composional devices ofIndian Sciences with special reference to Āyurveda and Mīmāmsā ripens student interpretaonand understanding of basic texts. The rst tantrayuk, Akrāntāveks.an.am, itself declares ourtheme well: “It is useful occasionally to look at the past to gain a perspecve on the present.”(Fabian Linden). Or as oppositely supplemented: “By looking at the present, we have also beenable to gain a perspecve on our past.” (Cynthia Kim, 2015).
All are cordially invited
