We hope you have a safe and restful Winter Break. We thank you for your trust and support as we close 2018 and look forward to the possibilities of 2019. Furthermore, we are grateful for the confidence you have in us as we have the daily pleasure of working with your child(ren).

We look forward to seeing all of our students again on Tuesday, January 8th. If you have specific questions, concerns or simply want to share your insights, please do not hesitate to contact our school. Our goal is to improve daily which can only happen with your support, confidence and wisdom.Hour of Code:December 3-9th, during Computer Science Education Week, tens of millions of students gathered all around the world to participate in the annual Hour of Code. For many, it was their first introduction to computer science, but for others, it has become an annual celebration of computer science and the movement to expand opportunity.

What is computer science you ask?? It is what makes all technology do what you want it to do - it is the code behind the programs that make them run. You can help your child by going "Beyond an Hour" by checking out some free re-sources at home: code.org/learn/beyond.

Frank students had a great time participating in the Hour of Code during STEM class.

Requests for Students to Remain Inside During RecessParents who request their child stay inside during recess will need to provide their child’s teacher and the office with a doctor’s excuse explaining why the child needs to remain indoors and the effective dates. Students who need to remain indoors will spend their recess in the office area.

Visitors All visitors to Frank Elementary are asked to report to the school office upon entering the building. In the past, parents and frequent visitors have done a terrific job adhering to this request. If you have an individual unfamiliar with our procedures coming to the building, it would help us out considerably if you would communicate this requirement. Thanks for your help keeping our students safe.

Jacket Way Shining Stars 2nd Quarter WinnersWe would like to recognize the following students for being

respectful, responsible, and ready Jacket Way Shining Stars for the 2nd quarter. These students were great examples of being respectful, responsible, and ready at school, at home, and everywhere they went!:) They enjoyed a pizza lunch on Monday December 17.

Too Sick for School? With increased time being spent indoors with others, with family from out of town and the end of outdoor sports, we are all more likely to be exposed to the cold and flu viruses that become so common during the winter months. While we

hope that ALL of our students stay healthy, it is important to know that some of our students are more at risk when contracting contagious viruses and diseases. For instance, the child with diabetes, a compromised immune system or asthma will miss MANY more days of school for a “simple” cold than those without these diseases. When is it ok to return to school after having an illness?• After having a fever, students must be fever free for 24

hours without the use of fever reducing medicine such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Motrin) or as-pirin.

• After vomiting or having diarrhea, students must be symp-tom free for 24 hours and have resumed a normal diet.

• After chickenpox, students may return when spots are dry and crusty and no new spots are occurring.

• After a bacterial infection (i.e., Strep throat, Pinkeye, bacte-rial skin infection) students may return after receiving antibiotics for 24 hours and fever free per the above guidelines or when your doctor certifies that your child is able to return. Failure to follow these guidelines will mean that your child will be sent home until recovery is complete. Now is the time to have a “sick plan” in place in the event of having an ill child. Have a back-up person available in advance in case you get a call from school that your child is ill and needs to be picked up to go home. Students who have a fever or have vomited at school can NOT ride the bus home. Here at school we are constantly reinforcing these very important principles to help prevent the spread of germs.

These same principles should be reinforced at home as well: • Frequent and effective hand washing (at least 20 seconds

with soap and water). Use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.

• Use your sleeve (or a tissue if available) when you cough or sneeze. Cough and sneeze in your elbow or sleeve. Do Not cough and sneeze in your hands. If you do, wash hands or use sanitizer immediately.

DO NOT touch the T-Zone or even better yet, your face. The

mucous membranes in the Eyes, Nose and Mouth are where germs enter the body. We want to do all that we can to have a safe and healthy environment here at school. With everyone following these helpful tips we hope that we can accomplish that goal.

Are You a Grandparent Raising a Grandchild?Do you know a grandparent raising a grandchild?

The district is working with our local ESC to provide a Grandparent Group. This group would allow you to meet other grandparents raising their grandchildren, bounce ideas around and receive support and tips from community organi-zations.  The group would meet monthly to address topics of interest and provide the supports you need. To help us with the development of this group, please reply to the short 6 questions survey below. https://goo.gl/forms/G6hrT28p8y3AQYhx1

Frank Hosts JA in a Day! On Thursday, December 20, Frank Elementary School welcomed several members of the business community to host JA in a Day! JA in a Day! is a special Junior Achievement delivery method that facilitates the partnership between a business and a school. Like all JA programs, business volunteers (from OI) involved in this program help to educate and inspire youth about free enterprise, business, and economics.

JA in a Day! differs from other JA programs in that the entire JA in-school program is covered in the course of one school day. At the end of the day, the students have completed all five JA lessons and have earned their JA certificate. Normally, this process would take five weeks to complete.
