The upper primary students are participating in swimming lessons over the next two weeks, the Year 1 to 6 classes are holding their class information meetings this week and the very popular P&C Meet and Greet afternoon is scheduled for next Friday …. so things are very busy. The position of Student Council is highly sought after at Takari. This is shown in the large number of students nominating this year. Nineteen Yr 6 students have nominated and will give their election speeches at a special community assembly this Friday. This represents 95% of the Yr 6 student population. Following the election speeches, the Yr 5, and Yr 6 students and Staff will vote for the six positions on this year‟s Student Council. All parents and community members are invited to attend the assembly. Good luck to all the nominees! David Tennant FACTION CAPTAINS: This year, Faction Captains for all sporting events will be chosen on merit. Yr 6 students who demonstrate good ability, attitude, sportsmanship and leadership will be chosen to captain their factions at the individual sports carnivals. Students will have the opportunity to captain their faction in the Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics carnivals. Team captains will be chosen for the Winter Carnival sports. The first group of captains to be chosen are the Swim Captains, who will take charge of their factions at the Swimming Carnival being held on Friday 3 March. PURPLE HAZE DAY: Thank you to everyone who supported last week‟s Purple Haze day. The school raised $215 for the very worthy Starlight Children's Foundation, which is a great effort from a school the size of Takari. Mr Tennant looked splendid in a purple shirt and a Docker‟s tie! PARENT COMMUNICATION: We are looking to improve communication between home and school, and have decided to reintroduce class parent representatives. We are also bringing back the class contact lists. Your child should have received a letter explaining the full details with this newsletter. If you wish to participate in this combined school and P&C initiative, please complete and return the form by Friday 24 February. STUDENT UPDATE INFORMATION: Students should also have received a Student Update Information sheet with this newsletter. It is imperative that the information we have regarding your child/ren is as accurate as possible. Please take the time to check the details on the form and make any necessary corrections. Please return the form to your class teacher, by Wednesday 22 February 2017. OUR NEWEST STUDENTS: The Kindergarten students had their first full day of Kindergarten yesterday. They played, painted, heard stories, made friends and had lots of fun, before they were „handed back‟ to parents at 3.00pm. Apologies for the amount of information and forms distributed this week. It is important parents read all the information carefully and return all required forms promptly. Thank you for your support NEWSLETTER #2 Week 3 Term 1 Wednesday 15 February 2017

FACTION SWIMMING CARNIVAL The Yr 4 to Yr 6 Faction Swimming Carnival will be held at Balcatta SHS pool on Friday 3 March. The school is required to have qualified supervisors at aquatic activities and we are in desperate need of someone who can assist us at the carnival. If you, or someone you know, has a current relevant qualification (AUSTSWIM, Bronze, SRC etc…) and can assist on the carnival please contact the school now.

Yr 4, 5 & 6 SWIMMING PROGRAM: The two week swimming program for Year 4 to 6 students is well underway. By the look of the photos they are having a great time.

SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAYS: A reminder to parents that this year‟s School Development days are: Term 1 Week 6 Tuesday 7 March (following Labor Day long weekend) Term 2 Week 1 Monday 24 April (preceding ANZAC Day) Term 2 Week 7 Tuesday 6 June (following WA Day long weekend) Term 4 Week 3 Monday 23 October SCHOOL COUNCIL PARENT REPRESENTATIVE STILL REQUIRED: There was no interest in the vacant School Council Representative position advertised in the last newsletter. We still require another parent representative and have now advertised the position on the Takari Facebook page. Please contact Mr Tennant now if you are interested in this position. P&C MEET & GREET: The annual P&C Meet and Greet will be held on Friday 24 February commencing at 4.30pm. This is a great chance to meet staff and other parents in a relaxing and fun environment. Amusements for children (and adults who are young at heart) and a Sausage Sizzle will be provided - all free of charge. There is a rumour going around that some staff will be getting very wet with one of the amusements. We hope to see you there. STUDENT COUNCIL SPEECHES: All Yr 6 students are busy writing speeches for selection as one of this year‟s Student Councillors. Students not wanting to nominate will deliver their speeches to the class. Those actually nominating will deliver their speeches at a special assembly this Friday 17 February starting at 9.00am. 2017 VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS: A voluntary contribution is an amount sought by an individual school to extend and enrich programs, services and facilities offered by the school. At Takari, your voluntary contributions go towards the cost of general teaching resources and ICT, sport and playground equipment. Voluntary Contributions for 2017 are: $60.00 per child (Statements will be issued soon) If you haven‟t already paid your voluntary contributions through Staples (booklist) you can pay: by direct debit into the Takari Primary School bank account 066 040 1990 0241

(using child name as reference)

or by cash or cheque to the front office

For families with 2 or more students at Takari, they pay a maximum of $120. Remember if you pay the voluntary contributions before the end of term 1, you will receive $10 off a future excursion or

incursion fee.

Thank you for supporting our school via this voluntary contribution.

PARKING AROUND THE SCHOOL: The use of the Kiss & Drive is getting better, but there are still a number of parents who are using the specially marked bays to park for an extended time. The Kiss & Drive bays have a 1 minute limit. The bays are designed so parents can set children down in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon without leaving the car. If students aren‟t waiting in front of the Library when you get there, please move on and find a more permanent parking space or drive around the block. Traffic Wardens from the City of Stirling will be making patrols and will fine parents not following the rules.

There are always spare parking spaces in the car parks on Jones Paskin Reserve opposite the school on Jones Street.

Thank you for helping keep our children safe.

THE AMAZING TAKARI P&C

The P&C is a group of dedicated parents who work together for the benefit of the school. Last year, money raised by the P&C helped fund the new outdoor furniture, the Mathletics program, Yr 6 camp and graduation, the school bands and computer equipment. They also assisted in numerous activities and committees in and around the school, as well as operating the uniform shop. They need your support. New faces and ideas are always welcome. If you would like to join this amazing group of parents, come along to the first meeting or contact one of the P&C members.

The P&C will be conducting its AGM at 7.00pm on Monday 20 February. The first meeting of the new year will follow the AGM.

UNIFORM SHOP: Please note, The uniform shop is run by parent volunteers, and will now operate on a TUESDAY morning from 8.30 - 9.00am.

SCHOOL BANKING: School Banking is back every Tuesday morning before school. Haven‟t banked before but wish to start? Talk to Mrs Burgess next Tuesday morning.

Takari is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students. We are open every Tuesday morning before school at the old canteen!

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for Takari students to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Students who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.

The rewards available during 2017 are: Cyber Handball Colour Change Markers 3D Chalk Set Tablet Case Smiley Emoji Keyring Volt Handball Pencil + Tech Case Epic Earphones School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives $5 when a student makes their first ever School Banking deposit and 5% on every deposit made through the school.

Win a family adventure holiday at Tokyo Disneyland! This year, School Banking is running a Future Savers Grand Prize competition that will take one lucky School Banker all the way to Tokyo, Japan. The winner gets an unforgettable family trip, for up to two adults and three children, where they‟ll explore Tokyo Disneyland with its amazing attractions, including the futuristic Tomorrowland, plus enjoy the fun rides at Tokyo DisneySea. Students who make 15 or more School Banking deposits by the end of Term 3, 2017 will be automatically entered into the draw. This is another great way to motivate students to save regularly and reach their savings goals.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask either Trisha Burgess or Anna Humphries ( who is another banking coordinator who has just joined to help out. Thanks Anna!) Or you can meet Karen from the Commonwealth Bank and start up an account at the "P&C Meet and Greet" on the 24 February. Just bring your ID to start up an account!

You Can Do It

In 2017, all classes will be involved in the You Can Do It! (YCDI) program. YCDI‟s main purpose is

the development of young people‟s social and emotional capabilities, including:

CONFIDENCE, PERSISTENCE, ORGANISATION, GETTING ALONG and EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE.

Central to the development of these 5 foundations, is instilling in young people 12 Habits of the

Mind that support and nourish the 5 foundations including, Accepting Myself, Taking Risks, Being Independent, I Can Do It, Giving Effort, Setting Goals, Being Tolerant of Others, Playing by the Rules, Planning My Time and Social Responsibility. In Week 2, students had their first lesson where they learnt how everyone can be Successful and Happy by identifying their own successes. They also learnt that doing their “personal best” helps them to be successful, especially when faced with something hard to learn. In Week 3, the students will be focussing on the 5 qualities that will help them to be successful and happy.
