TAKARI PRIMARY SCHOOL RICKMAN ST BALCATTA WA 6021 PH 9349 5607 FAX 9345 1660 www.takarips.wa.edu.au PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: The school community came together last Friday for the annual P&C Meet & Greet. The weather was perfect and everyone enjoyed the free sausage sizzle and entertainment. Children got to bounce with Scooby Doo, race through the obstacle course and make a splash at the dunk tank. Thank you to Mr Hill who again volunteered his time to provide the music for the afternoon. It was good to see so many families at the event, we hope you enjoyed it. The Yr 5, Yr 6 students and staff recently voted for the four positions on this year’s Student Council. The voting was very tight, and I would like to congratulate all the nominees for nominating and putting an enormous amount of time and effort into their speeches. The staff and parents who heard the speeches were high in their praise for all the students. Thirteen of the fifteen Yr 6 students nominated, and this augers well for Takari when there are so many students so eager to take on leadership roles within the school. I am pleased to announce the 2018 Student Councillors: David Tennant WELCOME TO TAKARI: Two new staff members commenced work at Takari this week. Mary Gerges has been appointed as the school’s Italian LOTE teacher, taking classes every Tuesday. Mark Cavill has been appointed as the Yr 5/6 teacher while a formal selection process to appoint a permanent teacher is undertaken. We thank Mrs Bott for helping out over the past three weeks, and welcome Mrs Gerges and Mr Cavill to the Takari family. P&C MEET & GREET: Thank you to everyone who attended last Friday’s P&C Meet & Greet. The afternoon was a great success. Everyone enjoyed the free sausage sizzle and amusements. Thank you to the Jones Street IGA who supported the event by providing all food at cost price. It is great to have a local business supporting our school. Thank you also to Mr Hill who once again provided the wicked tunes. Who will forget Mr Patterson being dunked to Another One Bites the Dust! CLEAN UP SCHOOL DAY: The Year 5/6 class will be coordinating a special Clean Up School assembly and litter pick up next Thursday 1 March. The assembly commences at 9:00am. Student Council badges will be presented and Head Boy and Head Girl announced. The assembly will conclude with all classes being taken to specific areas around the school to pick up as much litter as they can. SWIMMING LESSONS AND CARNIVAL: Swimming lessons for Yr 4 to 6 students concluded last week. Congratulations to all students who attended. As part of the school’s swimming program, all students who participated in the lessons are automatically selected to compete in the Faction Swim Carnival at Balcatta SHS in week seven, Friday 16 March. Mr Patterson will provide more details about the carnival soon. CLASS INFORMATION MEETINGS: Thank you to all parents who attended last week’s Class Information Meetings. If you were not able to attend and would like more information about your child’s classroom procedures, rules, expectations etc… please liaise directly with your child’s teacher. HELP REQUIRED IN THE K/PP GARDEN: Staff and parents did a wonderful job last year developing the sustainability garden in the Kindergarten and Pre Primary area. The students loved planting, watering, weeding, harvesting and eating vegetables. Thank you to Mrs Furness for assisting with this program last year. Unfortunately, Mrs Furness doesn’t have a child in K or PP this year………. So we are looking for another parent (or parents) to assist in the garden. You don’t have to be an expert gardener, you just need to be able to give some time to work with small groups of students - usually only half an hour a week. Please let Mrs Andrews or Miss Coad know if you can assist. YEAR 6 CAMP: Planning for the Year 6 Camp is well underway. The Dare Adventure Camp has been booked for three days and two nights in November. Mrs Carpenter, Mrs Rogers, Mrs Harper and the Yr 6 students started the fundraising off by selling lollies and drinks at last Friday’s P&C Meet & Greet. $430 was raised, which is a fantastic effort! PARENT COMMUNICATION: We are bringing back the class contact lists. Your child should have received a form requesting contact details with the last newsletter. Class contact lists are an excellent way for parents to communicate with each other and establish community relations outside of school. It is expected that these contact lists will be kept within the school community and not shared at large. The composite lists will only be distributed to the families participating in the list. If you choose to participate in this combined school and P&C initiative, please complete and return the form by Friday 23 February. Families who participated in this initiative last year, found it an excellent way to get to know other families in the school and it helped with birthday party invites! SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY IN WEEK SIX: Takari P S will be holding a School Development Day in week six, Tuesday 6 March. This follows on from the Labour Day long weekend, so students will get an extra long, four day weekend. Staff will be engaged in meetings and workshops all day.

STUDENT UPDATE INFORMATION: Students should also have received a Student Update Information sheet. It is imperative that the information we have regarding your child/ren is as accurate as possible. Please take the time to check the details on the form and make any necessary corrections. These forms were due back yesterday, if you have not yet returned yours, please bring to the office as soon as possible. It is important if changes to addresses and phone numbers occur during the year, please inform the office in writing as soon as these changes occur. Thank you

WEEK EIGHT PROGRESS INTERVIEWS: The school will be offering parents a Progress Interview in week 8, Tuesday 20 March. The school will suspend the normal school timetable at 11.45am, which is when students need to go home, and interviews will commence at 12.30pm. Parents will be able to book a time to meet with teachers for 15 minutes to discuss their child’s academic, social and emotional progress.

2018 VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS: A voluntary contribution is an amount sought by an individual school to extend and enrich programs, services and facilities offered by the school. At Takari, your voluntary contributions go towards the cost of curriculum resources and ICT, sport and playground equipment.

Voluntary Contributions for 2018 are: $60.00 per child (Statements will be issued soon) If you haven’t already paid your voluntary contributions through Winc (booklist) you can pay:

by direct debit into the Takari Primary School bank account 066 040 1990 0241 (using child name as reference)

or by cash or cheque to the front office

Remember if you pay the voluntary contributions before the end of term 1, you will be entered into the draw to win back your voluntary contribution.

Thank you for supporting our school via this voluntary contribution.

TAKARI PRIMARY SCHOOL

Coles Sports for Schools is back to help Aussie kids stay fit and healthy. When you shop at Coles, you'll receive Sports for Schools vouchers that your local school can exchange for sports gear. The more vouchers you collect, the more sports gear they'll receive. Start collecting today because the race is on! Look out for the box at Coles Northlands, ask your family and friends to place any vouchers they receive in our labelled collection box. Or bring them to the office and find the box there.

Help us collect for free sports equipment!

Dental permission forms have been sent home with students in Pre-primary and those who are new to Takari. Please complete the dental permission form and return to the school office as soon as possible. Even if you choose to send your child to a private dentist, please tick the box to indicate you do not wish to use the School Dental Service and return the note so the dental therapy centre does not continually chase you up. All students in primary school in Western Australia are entitled to attend the School Dental Service for free general and preventive dental care.

Mr Patterson’s AFTER SCHOOL SPORTS PROGRAM is back!

Takari PS has been successful in gaining Sporting Schools funding for this term. As a result, we are able to offer a five week fully funded Tee Ball program on Tuesdays from 3pm to 4pm. The program will be run by Sporting Kids WA, who have operated our after school programs in the past. The specific dates will be Tuesday February 27, March 13, 20, 27 and April 10. The program is restricted to 35 participants and is available for Year 3 to 6 students, with priority going to senior students. A permission slip will go to students who have expressed an interest in attending.

All enquiries are to be directed to Mr Patterson. Mr Patterson

ABSENTEE LETTERS: All student absentees are to be advised either written or verbally. Letters are sent home to parents of students with unexplained absences. If you receive an absentee letter with this newsletter, please complete, sign and return to the class teacher or the admin office as soon as possible. Thank you.

TRAFFIC WARDEN: We are very lucky to have a traffic warden on site in the mornings and afternoons to assist

with our students crossing the road. Unfortunately we had a near miss reported last week . Please ensure your children always : “Wait to hear the wardens whistle blow twice before crossing”, and “Walk across the crossing. Don’t run or ride your bike”.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER: My name is Kelly Collins and I am the school chaplain. My working days this year are every Monday and Tuesday. If you have any concerns or need some support for your child/children or even yourself, please don’t hesitate to give me a call or visit me in my office located next to the LOTE room. A lot of children struggle with anxiety every day. Luckily there are accessible ways to help your child to learn coping skills through the use of relaxation. Below is a list of some of the best relaxation apps for children who experience anxiety. I Hope you find them very useful for you and your family.

BREATHE, THINK, DO SESAME This is intended for parents and caregivers to use with their young children (2 -5) to help teach skills such as problem-solving, self –control, planning and task persistence. SMILING MIND This is designed to help people with pressure, stress and challenges of daily life. This app has a fantastic section on mindfulness in the classroom and home. This is suited for ages 7-18. POSITIVE PENGUINS (fee of $0.99c) This app helps children understand why they feel the way they do and helps them challenge their negative thinking. The four positive penguins take you on a journey to help you understand that feelings arise from your thinking and if you challenge your negative thoughts successfully you may be able to see things in a more realistic and even optimistic way.

“Throw kindness around like confetti.”
