Sheldon N. Trotman From as far back as he can remember he always wanted to become an engineer in either the computer science or aerospace arena. This passion came out of his love of computers, mathematics and flying objects. He worked really hard to achieve his full potential and he made great strides from as far back as elementary school. Also in middle school, he was fortunate to be selected for one of Maryland’s signature academic programs – the Math, Science and Computer Science Magnet Program for the Highly Gifted and Talented students. As he went through this program he was convinced that this was his forte. He absolutely loved math, science and computer programming and he excelled in each.At the end of his sophomore year in high school, he had already completed all of the computer programming courses at their school including the AP Advance Computer Programming. By junior year, he had completed all of the HS requirements, and six AP courses (Calculus BC, Physics C, Computer Programming, World History, US Government – will be sitting Statistics this year). He has also ventured outside of school and completed the University of Maryland’s introductory Engineering Course, their Intermediate level Java Programming, and a Computer Aided Design course at the Montgomery Community college. In high school, he worked excessively, not only because he needed it to get into a prestigious engineering school, but more importantly to prove that minorities also contain an insatiable desire for knowledge. Over time, he received numerous awards and accolades for his performance and he was even invited to serve on the state Academy Of Finance board. Sadly, many of his friends and other students of color were still relaxing and settling for mediocre grades. He believed that they could make it too if they had someone to help them. He met with the assistant principal and together they formed the club they call the Friends Reaching Educational and Social Heights (FRESH) Scholars. The final goal is intended to help as many people as possible so they can pursue higher areas of knowledge. In addition, after this program has taken root in his microcosm of the community, they plan to expand onto other horizons and into the broader community. This idea of incorporation is so important to him because his community’s actions, attitudes, and guidance have sculpted him into the individual he is today, tomorrow, and forever. He knows they are the reason he wake up every day prepared with his head held high and a clear mind open to everything that life has to offer..
