TAHUNANUI SCHOOL

NEWS

We have been very lucky to have a sign language teacher coming into school to teach senior students sign. Sign Language is one of New Zealand’s official languages alongside Maori and English.

It was great to see such a positive attitude from all of our cross country runners on Friday after-noon, it’s certainly not everyone’s cup of tea but everyone gave it a go. We were very lucky to have the rain clear and the sun come out just in time for the races to get underway. Thanks to those of you who volunteered as marhsalls for the afternoon. Interschool cross country is to be held on 12th June.

Tahunanui School News

Congratulations to our SAIL award winners for the last two weeks.

Congratulations to Cam Haring and Wendy Hunter who were reappointed to the Board of Trustees and new appointment Rhys Bromell. Congratulations also to Ian Lambie who becomes the staff representative on the Board.

Dentists recommend changing your toothbrush every season. Now that winter is here it’s a great time to update your toothbrush. You can bring in your old tooth-brushes (not electric), toothpaste tubes, dental floss containers and any oral health care packing and we will send it to Terracycle for re-cycling. You can drop off your re-cycling to Room 5 or the office.

Thanks to our wonderful fundraising team for all their hard work this year. They have organised movie nights and disco’s and raised lots of money for extra bit and pieces at school. If you would like to be involved with this group, or have any great fundraising ideas, please call into the office and chat to Helen. They would love your help!!

Huge congratulations to Pearl H, she came first in a competition playing the flugal horn for the Nelson Marlborough Westcoast Brass Band Association, she competed against 11 other soloists. Following the competition, the junior brass band then played at the Theatre Royal before all the adult bands. It was a huge day and she was very excited to win her medal! She even got to wear it on stage at the Theatre Royal that night. Well done Pearl!

Stretch Award

Pela P - Rui This young lady in Rui is a very deserving recipient of the stretch award. In class time she looks to get involved in lessons by sharing her thinking and asks for help when she is unsure of certain concepts. She happily helps others and works well as part of a group, solving problems without fuss. She is a friendly, caring and thoughtful student in Burrell and likes to volunteer for extra roles and responsibilities around the school, continually striving to STRETCH herself. Keep it up, it’s a real pleasure working with you…...Pela!

We are a local beekeeping operation specialising in small batches of high quality honey. With two children at Tahunanui we were keen to offer a percentage of each purchase of honey back to the school for fundraising. All of our honey is collected from plants in the top of the south island. Jars of honey are available for sale in the office for $12.

CAMP FEES Burrell Centre have their amazing camp this year at Bethany Park, Kaiteriteri. The cost of this will be $110 per student. If you would like to pay this off, $5 per week starting now will have it paid for before camp begins. Please contact Helen in the office for details on how to set up automatic payments. If you increase your payment to $10 per week, you’ll also have enough for a pool key at the end of the year too!

We are very grateful for the support of KidsCan. They provide all students with free raincoats and we also have shoes for those families who require them and free nit combs and treatment, along with hand sanitiser for the classrooms. They generously supply us with spreads and yoghurt for breakfast club and muesli bars to top up lunches. Please contact Helen in the office if you need to access shoes or nit treatment. If you feel that you are able to make a donation to KidsCan, please visit their website. www.kidscan.co.nz

Room 6 had an early start last week, they arrived at school at 7.30am to skype with Griffin’s class in New York. Griffin is attending Tahunanui School for 6 months and it was a great chance for both classes to learn a little about each other and how school works on the other side of the world. Room 6 made poi for his classmates back in the USA.

Room 4 have been learning how to mix colour with white to create varying tints. We did this by gradually adding white to a colour to alter it's lightness.

LIBRARY NEWS The swap-a-book day was held in the library last week where students swapped books from home for ex-library and donated books. Pheonix and Ruby were our first customers! Devon from Whitcoulls once again visited our library to read to students in the lunchbreak.

The e-space is used for recreation time on wet days.
