Ceebrating Diversit troug Common Ground
The annual state-wide fall conference is an opportunity to gather
with other educators to share, learn, be inspired, connect, renew,
relax, and refocus. The theme of this year celebrates the diversity
that the arts provide usthrough media, subject matter, style,
or interpretation. It also afrms that the arts bring us together
through a shared love of creativity, a celebration of the human
spirit, and the joy of inspiration.
The day-long workshops, presentations and our keynote artist,
Carrie Mae Weems, will present a variety of experiences to
connect with you on different levels. Dont miss it!

Over the past twenty-
ve years, Weems has
produced provocative,
beautiful, and nuanced
photographs, lms, and in-
stallations. She began her ca-
reer in the late 1970s, looking
to her own family in exploring
contemporary African Ameri-
can identity. Her narra-
tive soon broadened to
general aspects of theAfrican Diaspora, from
the legacy of slavery to
the perpetuation of de-
bilitating stereotypes and
nourishing folk traditions, rep-
resented through a combina-
tion of image and text. Today
Weems continues to address
struggles of empowerment
and oppression.Weems has also exhibited
throughout the United States
and internationally for more
than twenty years, and has
had solo and group shows
at The Museum of Modern
Art, the International Center
of Photography, the J. Paul
Getty Museum, The High
Museum of Art, The WalkerArt Center, and The Whitney
Museum. The Frist Center
for the Visual Arts will exhibit
the rst retrospective of her
work from September 21,
2012-January 13, 2013.

Academy Director, writes
This summer we had a ter-
ric time at the TennesseeArts Academy. In addition to
having our rst TennesseeArt Education Association
member exhibition this was the second yearTAEA sponsored Tennessees Best of the BestStudent Art Exhibition. During the night of the
recognition reception over 150 students, parents, and Art educators attended the reception. Several
TAEA members received monetary awards forhaving their work selected as Best of Show,
First, Second, Third and Honorable Mention inthe exhibit and students were again recognized
for having their work displayed in The LeuCenter for Visual Arts. Over 275 participantsattended the Tennessee Arts Academy this
summer with around 100 enrolled in the visualarts component. Participants received instruc-
tion in a wide range of topics including APportfolio development as well as printmakingand ceramics from a group of ve instructors
brought to the academy from across the na-tion. In the elementary/lower middle division
Pearl Krepps taught printmaking for elementaryand lower middle grades while Pam Stephens
had a section entitled Dropping In On the
Tennessee Arts Academy. Workshop ses-sions in our upper middle school/secondary
division included David and Tracy Gamble whotaught clay teapots and mask-making and Gary
Snidecorwhose session was titled Handfuls ofIdeas for Drawing and Painting in the Advanced
Placement Program.
Two of the highlights of the Academy came when
TAEA member and Past-President FlowerreeGaletovic received the Tennessee Arts Academy
Lifetime Achievement Award as well as receivingBest of Show in the TAEA member art exhibi-
tion. A second highlight came when we enjoyed aperformance by Oscar winnerMarvin Hamlisch whoreceived the Distinguished Service Award from
the Tennessee Arts Academy. Finally, I would liketo thank my wonderful facilitators who worked so
hard to make this academy one of the best: Debbie
Flynt, Ken Snyder, Kim Shamblin, Cassie Stevens, Libby
Lynch and Tina Atkinson for coming in and providingher display unit to showcase our wonderful artworkthat the participants created this summer.

Attention all Art Educators, we are
announcing the 2011/2012 Youth Art MonthFlag Contest theme early to step into the
school year on the right foot! We realize this will be a toughyear on all teachers, hopefully this will give you enough time
to focus on this contest. We should stand united to focus onthe importance of art education in the community. SargentArt will be sponsoring prizes again this year. The winning ag
designer and teacher will win a paid trip to New York! Firstplace prizes in elementary, middle and high school, students

The theme of Art Reects the Soul, conveys how art connectsdiversity, as well as individuality. Remember this is a visual artag contest for the WHOLE state of Tennessee. Each region
(middle, east, and west) should be represented. Please do notallow students to concentrate on music more than visual art.

Creative Craft Communit
On May 21, the Middle Region TAEA Summer Confer-ence was held in Nashville at the Frist Center for theVisual Arts. This full-day event provided an opportunityfor art educators to connect with members of the local
craft community through interactive demonstrations and a hands-on workshop. Conference sessions allowed participants to get to
know three artists, examine their creative processes, and learnapplications for teaching students of all ages and skill levels.
The conference highlight-ed Cheekwoods popular
Craft Outreach programand featured three of their
demonstration artists Te-resa Hays, Brenda Stein, andVickie Vipperman. Teresa
Hays, who specializes intextiles, taught an engag-
ing hands-on workshop inwhich participants learneda variety of techniques for marbling paper and fabric. Brenda Stein
and Vickie Vipperman brought their art forms (woodturning andweaving) to life through dynamic demonstrations. With all eyes on
them, Brenda skillfully transformed a piece of wood into a beauti-ful vase and spinning top, and Vickie used her hand-dyed yarns to
create an intricately woven scarf.
Throughout the day, these three artists imparted a great deal of
knowledge and skill that can be applied to both classroom teach-ing and personal art-making. Yet, what seemed to resonate most
with the group was the artists passion for art and their desire toeducate. This common interest resulted in an energetic dialoguethat left everyone feeling inspired and rejuvenated.
These types of experiences sustain us in our work as art educationprofessionals, and we extend a special thanks to our sponsors
for supporting the professional growth of TAEA members.
